Why can't they just die and let other companies rescue their licenses from them?! Especially super-popular Hetalia. Greedy bastards!

And all I want is Keiko Suenobu's Life. Or that someone else license-rescue it. Either way, it's a masterpiece title that absolutely, undeniably deserves and is in utter need of being finished.

C'mon. I want to finish my collection of Maid-sama! at least. I friggin' love that series and bought up every volume I could get. Either release the rest of the vols. or let someone else license-rescue them, TP. Please. |

There still appears to be some confusion regarding Tokyopop's licenses. All of Tokyopop's licenses, except for the titles it owned through its in-house OEL program, were returned to the original publishers when TP USA shut down business. The few titles you see listed in the article are either titles from its OEL program or titles that were licensed anew after the shut down such as Hetalia. This means that Tokyopop no longer has the license for titles like Maid-Sama. Those titles are available to be license-rescued if the Japanese owner wishes to offer them and some other US publisher wishes to take up the offer.

Are you sure, LKK? Tokyopop still actively puts out manga in Germany, and even looking at this list, Tarot Cafe is a foreign license manwha that they still have a hold of.
I don't think they let go of all their foreign license rights. |

Agreed although hopefully when the economy takes a turn for the better they will re-enter the English market. If not they should let go of their English licences - no need to hold onto them. |

Tokyopop Germany is functionally a completely separate business entity; their license negotiations have nothing to do with the US Tokyopop, and vice versa. When they shut down, Tokyopop-US explicitly stated that they had surrendered all their foreign licenses; if they are now offering Tarot Cafe, they probably re-negotiated it with its Korean publisher and/or author (or vice versa; some publishers/authors are very interested in having their work in English even if it doesn't make that much money). |

@ Agent355, lebrel is right. Tokyo Germany is a separate entity that has very little to do with the US branch and nothing to do with it regarding licensing. I should have been more explicit and said that I was referring to only the US branch in my post. Everything else lebrel said about the US branch reaching new license agreements is also correct as has been confirmed by TP-US reps on Twitter, on Facebook, and in its email newsletters. (I vividly remember the hoopla in those pages when TP-US announced it had regained the Hetalia license. You'd have thought it was the Second Coming. LOL)

My question is, how does Right Stuf factor in to this? I was under impression that they had gotten the Hetalia rights but were using Tokyopop's translation because they had finished volume 3 (and 4?) before closure. Is it more like TRSI just has exclusive physical distribution rights or something? I think it happened with that Bizenghast series, too.
All I know is that I hate seeing that TP spine. Who even comprises the company? Is it just Stu Levy hiring a translator? And...if they have Tarot Cafe, what else do they have? In any case, I wish TP would go away. Let the rights to Hetalia and whatever else be back in the mix. Do they retain the in-house works through contracts, or did they have to actually negotiate for them?
Basically was my first thought. |

Will they just die already and give the books to other companies already?! I want to see Hetalia get a good clean translation, same goes for "GTO" they're so bad when it comes to putting the books together I almost half to ruin the spine just to read everything on the pages! Just give up your licenses and give them to someone who will take care of them. ( Personally I think VIZ would do amazing with "Great Teacher Onizuka" and Yen Press would do a good job with "Hetalia".) But just DIE ALREADY!!!
