Haters can hate all they want. It's not going to stop people who do like the series to continue following it.
I, for one, am ecstatic for SAO and all the news about Extra Edition. I'm speculating the person Kirito meets is Kikuoka Seijirou/Chrysheight, not Sinon.

I want a two season series of GITS, with 26 episodes each and Kenji Kawai/Yoko Kanno. Do you know what else I want? A remade version of Trigun, with a story following the manga better, unlike the original series, which was good on its own, but a garbage adaptation. I want anime with Production IG level character design CONSISTENTLY. Is this too much to ask? No, no it's not. I don't want crap, with terrible, diverging mid points, awful characters, cheap character designs and low fun/excitement factors. |
You're rather delusional if you think that Sword Art Online is "holding back good anime".
GITS and Trigun weren't getting new anime for a long time before SAO came around based on factors that SAO hasn't impacted in the least. Especially as SAO involved different companies entirely. The same is going to be true for pretty much any other series you care to name.

>_> Yes. Trigun sold like garbage and isn't popular so don't bet on seeing anything more from it. People actually like SAO which is why more stuff for it gets made.

Can we get out of this zone where only Japanese sales matter? Nobody said it had to be made primarily for Japan. It could be made for the western world, since that's where the fanbase is concentrated, just like that movie, which got a world release prior to its Japanese release. It could be a bit like Bakugan in that regard. And only the anime didn't do so hot. The manga did fairly ok in Japan.

Haha thats funny.
Only Japanese sales matter. The rest are a drop in the bucket. Comparing it to Bakugan is completely disingenuous

Fencedude is mostly correct.
While there have been a handful of cases over the years where overseas popularity has influenced the creation of additional anime content (The Big O immediately springs to mind), it's a rare occurrence.

Ghost in the Shell Innocence, Trigun Badlands Rumble, Big O II, Hellsing Ultimate, SD Gundam. Yeah, their Japanese "success" made these shows/franchises available. Sure thing buddy. And just because something's anime doesn't mean only Japan is the be all end all. I don't think Ice Age's American "success" was why those sequels got made.

Big O II is the only one on that list that makes any sense. That was actually a co-production with Cartoon Network helping to fund it.
As for Ice Age, if a movie makes over $100,000,000 its production cost on the domestic box office sales alone then, yes, it's going to get sequels.

Trigun Badlands Rumble was released overseas before Japan. Hellsing Ultimate was co-produced by Geneon Entertainment USA. Innocence, I believe was co-produced by Dreamworks. None of those shows/movie did terribly well in Japan. Admittedly, the SAC series did fairly well in Japan, but the first movie was a flop everywhere, except American home video. Back in the day, it TOPPED the Billboard charts to become the best selling home video release during its 1st week. Hellsing's manga did well in Japan, but the series flopped big time and sold like shit. When it came over to the western world, it sold like hotcakes. SD Gundam did really well in CN, but if counted as a Gundam series(which it is), it did HORRIBLY in Japan. I think even Sunrise released the next batch of episodes for CN, prior to TV Tokyo. I dunno, but still, there have been quite a number of anime, that has continued not because of the home country, but because of the overseas markets. Rumor has it that the aliens got more screen time in later Toy Story films, due to the Japanese audience. See?

There are extremely rare exceptions where American sales had an impact (though I'm skeptical some of those qualify). All of those titles titles' original series were released in the U.S. over a decade ago. In case you didn't notice, the anime market when through some pretty major shifts a few years ago. American buyers do not have the kind of influence they used to.

Hollywood movies kind of have to consider foreign audiences because of their massive budgets. :)Hollywood censored a few movies in the production stage because they felt it might offend China or not do well there if certain themes/images are shown so they rewrite stuff they originally wanted to do because China is a huge market for movies. Anime doesn't have to do that because of it's small budget and niche audience so they don't care if they offend westerners. I think Badland Rumbles is all you're going to see. I'm not sure on the behind the scenes stuff but did Funi have any hand in producing/funding that movie like they did their Mass Effect and Dragon Age stuff? If they did it'd make sense. Big O 2 was definitely funded by Cartoon Network and that's the only reason it got made, they didn't see it do well in America and make it out of their own pockets, they used foreign money on it, so unless some American company wants to fund a 52 episode reboot series of Trigun I doubt you'll ever see one. I'm not too sure how much money American companies are willing to invest in anime though since Big O 2 flopped for Cartoon Network.
