What can I say, I love Dragonbal Z. I am ecstatic to see that an actual comprehensive (and remastered!) collection has come out for "season 1" for a very reasonable price. I had never wanted to start the extremley slow and disjointed process of purchasing every "single" DVD of the show, and was waiting for something as nice as this.
My question is this: I see that season 1 is already out, and the season 2 is going to be early May. Does Funimation have plans to eventually release the entire show (everyepisode) through this 40 episode per-season type of format? Have they made any kind of announcment when boxsets 3, 4, etc.., etc.. will be released? I am really hoping that they arn't going to go on some abdrupt hiatus with just 2 box sets. Thanks for the answers ahead of time ![]() |

If you're any kind of DBZ fan, I recommend you NOT buy these mangled box sets. They're cropped by 20% and oversaturated/filtered to represent the poorest video quality possible in comparison to the remastered Dragon Boxes in Japan. Heck, I'd rather buy each volume individually if they hadn't stopped production of the "uncut for the first time ever!!!" DVDs of the Saiyan and Namek sagas. Please read this thread for an in depth discussion on how some of us are feeling cheated. If you really don't mind paying moderate prices for a bad product, though, so be it...

So there isn't any kind of comprehensive box set for DBZ as of yet?
Also, because of all the petitions beginning, is Funimation even considering putting it back to their original source? They almost tricked me into thinking that they somehow found more side-to-side of DBZ lol I find it astonishing that they are not releasing correct DBZ. After all this waiting for excellent boxed sets of Dragonballz I have to deal with some cafuffel over cropped footage. Ah well lol |

Back in 2003, there were two 26-disc boxsets released in Japan known as the Dragonbox. These ran up about 100,000 yen each, had no subtitles, but did include all 291 episodes, previews, remastered (properly remastered) footage, and the Playdia Special/OAV with other stuff too. There were some other sets released (A Dragonball one, a GT one, and a DB/Z movies one) which were all very similar, and thats about as definitive as you can get. Of course, these are out of print and do not have subtitles as I said, however the single disc releases for Z have recently finished, and the single disc releases for Dragonball are beggining/have begun. In general, they're a lot more reliable than FUNimations releases, but obviously cost a bit more.
There technically is a little bit more on the sides, but it's all negligible space, IE stuff that was meant to be cut out anywya. Added to the fact that it's a show framed for 16:9, you're gaining a total waste compared to important video information. On top of that, they did this, under the justification of 'overscan', which is a load of crap because 16:9 TVs can still have overscan, so in turn you lose even the stuff you gained on the sides.
Simple remedy, if subtitles aren't your problem, is to buy the Spanish, R3, or R2 releases and ignore FUNimation's release. Send them a letter informing them of this. The only way this can ever change is if people let them know, however just about the entirety of the DBZ fanbase has more or less bent over and taken this, so the chances of FUNimation doing something right about it are slim to none. You've got your choice though. |

So when you say "without subtitles" you mean it's in Japanese and has no engliish subs, or just no Japanese version? Also, are all of the single discs (which you say are now completed?) still in production, or do I have to track them all down via Amazon or some such retailer?

By no subtitles, I mean exactly that- There are no English (or Japanese) language subtitles. However, the original Japanese music, voices and SFX are still there in it's entirety, exactly as it was aired however many years ago. All discs should still be in print, but you'll have to check on amazon.co.jp, CDjapan, and other places. AOD's Region 2 forum is a good place to ask for help on these things. |
