Does anyone on this forum know: Are anime DVDs released in India and Israel? If so, by which companies, and in which languages?

I'm afraid I don't know about DVD's in India (and if you do find one, I would be concerned about it's authenticity) but there is quite a bit of anime on TV in India (more than there is here in the UK Evil or Very Mad).
Some shows are dubbed in English (even those which aren't licensed in America), most are in Hindi, and very few are left in Japanese with English subtitles.

I'm sorry but I can't offer any information on Israel.

Surprisingly, there are actually two companies licensing anime in Israel. Though Forum Film www.forumfilm.co.il only has Howl's Moving Castle as far as I see (and I don't see too far in my age).
The other company is Globus United www.globusunited.co.il
They have Spirited Away as well as Yu-Yu Hakusho, Bay-Blade and Card Captor Sakura.
All movies are available with Japanese dub + Hebrew subs as well as hebrew dub. Series are only available in hebrew dub.
Hope this helps.
Oh, the sites are both in hebre, BTW.

I work for a company that maintains thousands of employees in India but none of the folks I work with are interested in anime, at least to my knowledge. In any case I seriously doubt most anime in India is truly legit and thus is probably very similar to the HK junk we're all familiar with.

I have to admit this surprises me. In a market as large as India, you'd think there would be at least one legitimate anime publisher.

Third, is there any way to add the Israeli releases Obaa-chan mentions to the Encyclopedia? It doesn't seem to offer an option for the Hebrew language AFAIK.

Fourth and finally, one of the non-anime films Globus United is releasing is Borat. I wonder how that film will go over in Israel. Wink

I don't think size has everything to do with it, just look at China. For much of my life China has been a virtual no-go zone for legitimate prerecorded media, even though it has a truly massive population. I also doubt that disposable income has everything to do with it either; just look at how little anime is released in Western Europe compared to the US. This is actually bit of an unusual situation if you think about it. What made the US the largest anime market outside of Japan? In my short lifetime the US anime market went from virtually nothing to hundreds of millions in total revenue.

I was born and raised in India. Although I now live in New York, it has nothing to do with my absolutely affection towards Japanese Animes. There are several Japanese Anime series that still air on Indian TV Networks including Ninku, Gundam, Transformers, etc. and the occasional mega classics like Akira and Ghost in the Shell.

DVDs are generally pirated and hard to come by. The total population of the country does not imply a greater market. Although many kids like to watch animes on tv, not very many continue to like them as they grow older.

In so far as the anime's being dubbed in Hindi, that is a more recent phenomenon in the last 4-5 years. Growing up, all the animes i watched were all English dubs.

Well, if you know that there are 2 kinds of anime in China, one with Chinese audit, the other with Japanese audit and Chinese subtitle, and compare the number and popularity of them, you would soon find out that what you said might be wrong.
This is simple: illegal copies of anime would not have Chinese audit. They simply don't have that much time to waste. But before 2000, while internet and p2p transfer are not so well established, there're rarely any anime of the 2nd kind in China. However, for people in their 20s like me, we are used to anime for about 15 years, while Japanese anime gradually dominated the Chinese market since 1990.
If you would let me make a little and incomplete list to show how many anime China has legally imported, it would be great honor.
Well, I've got to admit that, talking about Manga and peripheral products, you might be right. But about those episodes of anime that aired by TV stations, you are completely wrong.
