Ouch, harsh for them. 22 million is a lot for a couple of webhosters to pay. Don't download, kiddies.

What site was this? (Name, not URL)

Yeah!
Sometimes I feel I'm one of the only people who feels if I like something, the person who made it deserves to be paid for it.
My teen's friends are all "I don't have a job because I;m in high school so I can't afford it." But my teen's making about $100 a week working part-time so it's not a good excuse.

I bet it's related to this.

After being arrested on February, 3 people were recently sentenced

website. On May 17th The Fukuoka district court handed down a
penalty of 500,000 Yen and a 3 year prison sentence (2 years were
suspended). The Association of Copyright for Computer Software
(ACCS) says that after uploading the manga, it was made available to
view free of charge. 649 titles were said to have been made
available such as Police Box, Touch and Takehiko Inoue's SLAM DUNK.

Harsh. They got convicted twice for the same crime.

Wow, twice for the same crime. How stupid can you get?

Well there are not a lot of options, we have 3 great problems when dealing with manga/anime:

1- They are too expensive (if we are talking about buying complete series) Most people can;t afford to buy all the volumes or dvds to the series they like.

2- Most of the greatest Manga/series are not licenced here so we have no access to them any other way.

3- The series that HAVE been lisenced are far far far behind from the current japanese episodes/chapters. If we stick to the licensed versions not only we have to deal with bad dubs (in the anime) but we have to wait months for a single volumes, lets be honest, by the time those long series finish coming all the way here most people will have either lost interesed..or... died from waiting or something.

My point is, Mangaka have the right to know what people do with their mangas and they have the right to recive money for them, but if we stick to the rules as we should the anime/manga era that we are in would suffer greatly, and in time, might end.

Blah blah blah no money so poor blah blah save your money blah blah blah it'll make you feel better in the end once you realized you actually supported the creator instead of pirating.

Personally, it doesn't really bug me if you preview a volume, or read an unlicensed/not released up until a certain volume series, but seriously. Teenagers are the people who whine about not having money the most, but they are also the ones with the most disposable income. I've been there, you just have to prioritize between that new CD or that new manga.

By the way, we're a capitalist world. The era of anime/manga we're in will end faster if you don't buy products, not if you respect copyright laws. Once it becomes unprofitable, things won't be released here. And in Japan, if it gets too unprofitable, most mangaka will have to go to another career to put food on the table, or their manga will be released in lower quantities, so harder to get on both side of the Pacific.

I can't believe the views of half the people in this forum. There is so much idealism and naivety. Most of the time I see a post that takes a realistic view of anime releases in terms of the economy, it's from Gatsu.

Manga isn't that expensive. One book costs like $10 for a couple of chapters. There are websites like yesasia.com that do sell manga in Japanese for around $5 or less per book. Also, anime can be watched legally on the internet on a broadcating website, ie Muchmusic. Many TV stations are adding episodes on their websites for free. There isn't a lot of anime out there, but as times goes on there will be more.

I don't think the anime/manga era would end because people are buying anime legally. If anything, buying anime/manga would boost the industry because companies would have a niche market. If no one is buying anime/manga then companies outside of Japan wouldn't lisence anime/manga because they won't make any money.

I'm also noticing a trend in companies quickly releasing the first volume to a series. Look at what ADV did to Le Chevalier d'Eon. It was aired in Japan last fall and the first volume was released in North America in Feburary.

I'm a poor teenager, so I totally relate to the "I'm so broke I can't afford manga blah blah blah." But it's not a legit excuse.

Personally, as a poor teenager, I get about $50 a year, from New Years' and Christmas combined. All of it goes to anime and manga. I have no other source of income, and my parents don't allow me to keep a job because it'd affect my grades. I couldn't possibly support the industry more, unless I robbed a bank and used the money to fund my hobby (or if I sold myself to slavery/prostitution). Therefore, I do download fansubs and scanlations. Am I breaking the law? Yes. Do I have any right to say my "poverty" justifies my actions? Not at all. If you're starving to death, you still don't have the right to steal.

Capitalism is about the rich getting what the poor don't have because they have more money. Some people are just born with the short end of the stick. If you don't like it, move to Cuba or start a revolution. But if you want prices to drop and quality to rise, you better do your best to pump this industry with as much money as you got, because that's the only way.

i say about 350 goes to anime, and i copy anime/dvd episodes/ movies but only because one of myu friends can't afford anything, and her mom won't let her get a job, but still i know it's wrong, and those guys receiving that much punishment is a bit harsh, but they weren't making any profit we're they?

Well, maybe it SHOULD end. Maybe Japan SHOULD quit making comics and cartoons. Then see how you spoiled, whiny, pirating punk-asses like it. Personally, I'd rather have a world where anime and manga are made slowly but with high quality, rather than a world where they are available everywhere, all the time, and 99% of them are crap. So yes, Dear Japan, Please continue to enforce your copyright laws, so that idiot losers will stop taking things for granted and learn to appreciate the unique artistic gifts that this nation has given the world.

I'm from the school that taught me that money should always go back to the creator of some media if you like it enough. We got too many punks out there who think they can get what they want for free free free. There should be no excuses.

But, as I learned from looking through self-inflated garbage like "Combat Butler Hayate," "Maburaho," and their ilk; some stuff is just not worth plunking your hard-owned money on. Sad

Ouch. Harsh. Let's not get *too* hasty...

It does get a bit ridiculous with all the self-righteous crap that comes from the bootleggers and pirates. The argument that we should not "stick to the rules" in order to keep the manga/anime business running is a load of bull, and it doesn't take a leap of common sense to figure that this sort of scheme wouldn't work. The R1 licensing and distribution business needs our money. It's pretty simple. If they are starved for money, it's not like they'll take losses to license better anime and manga. They can't. They're businesses. If something ceases being lucrative, they'll stop devoting their efforts into that thing. The purpose of the mangakas, animation studios, and distributors is not to make every single greedy, grubby, and ungrateful teen in the world happy and satisfied with their form of entertainment. Their purpose is to make money, and once the money flow stops, so does the entertainment. Don't cite your apparent "poverty" as the reason for your theft, as anime is much more expensive in Japan and you are probably not as "poor" as you think you are.

If you are too impatient to wait for the R1 release, fine. I'm not going to fault you for downloading an unlicensed fansub, as I will not deny that I've been guilty of downloading fansubs. However, do not claim that this is the right thing to do or that this is legal in any way. It really isn't. By downloading a free fansub or scanlation without due compensation to the mangaka or distributor, you are pretty much stealing. You are obtaining a service without giving compensation to the creator of the service. This is the definition of theft, and the creators are hurt by this. If you will eventually buy the R1 release (if it comes out), good on you. However, most of those that download fansubs and scanlations do not, and saying that this is okay is simply wrong.

Not giving the creators their money does not aid them in delivering to you the best kind of content. In fact, many of the quality niche titles do not make it over because the licensor is forced to turn to the surefire money titles to make money. The business of anime licensing isn't the most lucrative in the world, and if they are deprived of more money, it's not like they'll magically decide they need to magnanimously deliver more quality content because of the nonexistent voice of a thieving and greedy teen. Your money speaks loudly, and the message of a desire for anime will not be delivered through a self-righteous comment on a fansub forum.

A lot of people especially need to understand that downloading licensed content without immediate or eventual compensation is especially damaging.
