I was at a manga internet cafe this evening, and after having read the first book, I had to go and get the rest of the volumes from the shelf because I knew that I was going to finish it before I left. Sure enough an hour and a half later I did. A great story line with some of the weirdest looking people, and some sick techniques to make you want to read into it more. The storyline was just awesome, and the ending didn't fail either. One of the best ninja stories I have read yet, and am really looking forward to seeing the anime. In fact, one of my friends was looking over my shoulder while I was reading it, and he put this title on must see also, so the power of Basilisk has already gained two fans today. This title will get a Masterpiece rating from me.

I'm really liking Basilisk. The manga just feels so... right. From the character designs to the pace, everything just fits together really well. The only problem I have is the backgrounds. I think it's interesting and all, but I just don't like the way the characters look against them. Especially in a forest setting. Except for that the art is amazing. The fight scenes are really easy to follow which is a big plus for me.

... Whoa, it's really that easy for a "Masterpiece" rating for some people? Well, that certainly explains oddities in the rating system on ANN...

Anyway, I read the five volumes of Basilisk a while back. Wasn't impressed outside of the rather distinctive art. Seemed like some kind of mindless action series devoted to "ninjas" having tricked out abilities and gradually killing one another. The last two volumes were supenseful enough and there were valid attempts at some characterization, but it never really got me enough to care. Didn't help that it was basically a violent rehash of Romeo and Juliet.

Yeah. After having thought about the whole outcome of it, that's what it reminded me of. Only thing is that spoiler[everybody died instead of just two people. And there were actually quite a few love tragedy stories in there.]

I read the first volume. Art is pretty nice in a "Ninja Scroll on steroids" kind of way, but personally I prefer my manga with more character development in the actual story than on the back cover (thank you Greg McElhatton). Yeah, not impressed. These kind of simple stories work better in animated form, but I can't imagine that they're going to manage to totally turn the story around. I just can't understand the kind of attention this thing is getting considering there are much better action titles out there, even mindless ones.
