I know a lot of people have been complaining about the lack of hand-drawn animation coming out of Disney (beyond the sequels, which are of questionable merit). So hopefully I'm not alone when it comes to being happy to hear that Disney is going to put focus back on 2D animation, rather than just continuing on with only the 3D, computer-drawn stuff. |

I think that is nice to know that they're actually going to try and come up with an original story with 2-D animation. I was worried for a while that all of the movies from now on would come out through Pixar. Their attempts to revive 2-D these days have turned out to be some of disappointing ever in my book, since almost all of them are sequels of older films. Cinderella 3? Give me a well deserved break. That is right off the bat of Happily Never After. I will not even try to put my time into watching this "second" sequel, and I don't think I would want my kids (when I have some) to watch it either, because in a sense it just defaces a great classic.

I'm absolutely THRILLED. I'm glad Disney has figured out that audiences were wanting to see good stories, not 3D animation (well...generally).
I do hope, however, that Rapunzel will remain the same. I was really excited about the new style they were trying with the animation on it--it sounded like a legitimate expansion of the technology that Disney himself would've been proud of. |

I agree that it is good news. These CG kid's movies are too hard to keep track. It was great when there was ONE big movie every year that even adults had to see. But with the lowering costs of producing computer animated films, it became easily profitable, but lowered the quality and memorability (is that a word) of the films.
So kudos to Disney. |

Well, looks like there taking a leaf from the anime book and seeing there still is a market for 2D style animation. The first movie they make like this will probably be a big break out hit because it's so different from what we expect now, similar to what Toy Story and Shrek did to 2D previously, that wouldn't surprise me at all.

I'm surprised, really. I mean, it's no secret their own CG films have been ass, but I figured Disney would still continue to pump out more of them while declaring hand drawn animation a dead art form. While it may be somewhat refreshing to see them go back to it, that doesnt automatically mean their theatrical 2D movies are going to be as good as they once were. What was the last really good one? Emperor's new groove? That's getting on 6 years now or something like that. All their staff from the "Modern Golden Age" (Little Mermaid-Lion King) are either dead or retired, so it doesnt really matter anymore.

Hopefully this means they'll also keep doing non-kiddiefied, non-musical movies like Atlantis (the last non-Pixar Disney movie I really dug).

Actually I've enjoyed most of Disney's 2D films, even the final ones such as Brother Bear and Atlantis. Being a Disney fan I love this news, while it might not guarantee good films from Disney down the line it's not exactly a guarantee that they'll suck either, such speculation is meaningless at this point. Disney has new direction under Lasseter and I think if anyone can turn the company around it is him.

I have to admit, I am slightly intrigued by the concept of this one...at very least, it looks leagues better than Cinderella 2, not that it would take much. I actually would like them to go back to the older style, music and all, because I love old Disney music. The last really good Disney film that I can think of was one of the last they did with this, I think, which was Mulan. The later stuff, 2D or 3D, just didn't appeal to me as much (though I do want to see Happy Feet). |

Yes! Disney needs to make more movies like Mulan. It's the only one of my Disney movies that I haven't given away, because I still like watching it sometimes. The songs are fun, the animation is beautiful, and it's a good story. It's really sad that Disney has gone so far downhill just for the sake of turning a profit by beating dead horses. If a movie is more than 10 years old, it should not have a sequel. |

there are definitely elements to 2D animation that are better than 3D
 this is just a bump in the road for Disney 
(for one thing anime wouldn't be as fun in 3D. It takes away the animeness xD) |

It is incredibly good news. While I do enjoy the 3D stuff, it gets old really quickly. I remember when Toy Story came out, and it was such a novelty, because they were just begining to experiment with this stuff. But they never stopped, and as the quality of the graphics went up, the quality of the writing and imagination went way, way down. Also, the general look of 3D animation is interesting, but too much of it makes you choke.

im still pissed off at disney for removing JETIX's totally rad and nostaglic anime block (contiunes to mourn the loss of MCK....) but these signs of disney returning to 2D animation were show when:
* JETIX has a couple shows in production. ( with already making 2 bad decisions, 1. putting ABCFamily in cructhes for removing it's block from the channel, and 2. removing our precious anime block off from our tv screens! ) ** some Disney Channel animated shows are returning for another run *** sequels and new content from the house Mickey built **** new and improved Disney.com as long as they don't mess things up this time, we're good, otherwise we, the anime fans will take our rage at disney's JETIX divison for removing our anime block! --The FZ |

I couldn't have said it better myself; was Pixar instrumental in securing this change? 'tis a good sign for the direction of the company; rather than cater to its roots, Disney should be a pioneer in every sort of innovation, particularly story strength. |

ill tell yall this. i love animation. as a child i enjoyed all of those made for kids g rated 2d movies from really old to newer. and i liked 3d animation after toy story but in the 2000s when i seen the lack of 2d titles beyond dvd and tv i got sad. that why im a 2D lover when it comes to theatrical realeased animation films. and sometimes animated films in general. its all 3d and its like forgeting your roots as animators. forgeting what used to be. thats why im glad that thanks to this a return will be made. you cant get the same effects with 3d that 2d can do. so ill always be a 2D lover! hopefully when i get up there in skill and work for a company i can be part of the 2D revolution! |
