I am fairly new to the wonderful music from Japan, being mostly exposed to it through anime and I was wondering if there was any type of "j-metal". I'm a big fan of metal bands and just wanted to know if the japanese have delved into this great genre of music. Any replies are greatly appreciated. Wink

Electric Eel Shock is your best bet. They have two albums out in America: "Go USA" and "BEAT ME"; both of which are pure awesome! Their new album and documentary comes out early this year; so look out for those, too. Also, drummer Gian gets credit for improving on the c***sock concept. (Their official Myspace is www.myspace.com/beatme)

Another good J-METAL band is SUNS OWL; who are like a Japanese Killswitch Engage. Their album "Liefe" is really good; but you can only import it.

If you're looking for metal that has a particularly Japanese taste to it, I recommend Onmyoza. They call themselves a "youkai heavy metal band." They use a lot of classical Japanese in their music. But first and foremost they're a metal band that rocks out. There are two vocalists, Kuroneko, a woman, and Matatabi, their male bassist, and they both have amazing voices.

You could try High and Mighty Color, they did a few songs for bleach. They aren't real heavy but they get the job done.

Um....I know BUCK-TICK has done some heavy metal-ish stuff, and they're a great band generally. I'll ask my friend (who's an authority on them) if there are any specifically metal-sounding albums.

I'd also suggest Boom Boom Satellites, although they're a bit techno.

A friend of mine got me into Envy. They're a great screamo group if that's what you're interested. www.myspace.com/envycore (fan site). They also have a few albums out in America (same label as Mono).

You could try Dir En Grey. They're not as heavy as some but they've got some decent material.

Interestingly enough their video for Saku won viewer's choice for Best Metal Video 2006 on Headbanger's Ball beating out bands like Lamb Of God and even Iron Maiden.

Well the new maiden album is garbage by their standards, so it's no suprise.

But Dir En Grey?? They're like the Korn of J-nu metal *gags*

www.theendrecords.com, www.sentinelsteel.com, www.cduniverse.com are where I go for underground metal, chances are you'll be able to find something there. Possibly CDJapan, but you'll be paying out the ass if you go that route.

It should be made clear that Envy is emo/screamo more in the true 1980s "emotional hardcore" sense, and not the pop/rock that MTV and Rolling Stone like to call emo.

I heard a track from them a few years ago. Very brutal. Almost on the level of some death-metal bands.

I'm not sure about Boris. They're not mainstream metal, that's for sure, but I see people categorize them as drone-metal so they may have some value for metal fans.

The Mad Capsule Markets sound like a metal/punk hybrid with some freaky warp-speed electronic beats thrown in.
