It's even the first 2D film (japanese and foreign) to top 10 billion yen since Ponyo. Avatar, Toy Story 3 and Alice in Wonderland all had 3D to increase their gross, in fact The Wind Rises has already topped the latter two in admissions (and should top Avatar in that department sooner or later).
