Oh, all of the Samuel L. Jacksonisms this film will need if it's not Rated R. Hell, it might need them if it is. I do hope the "coming out soon" and "2014" don't mean it's a "F you, it's January" film.
I think this film may be notable, however. I'm not sure if it's the first Hollywood adaptation of an original anime (Freeman wasn't even Hollywood), it's probably the most high-profile thus far for something serious, but it's relatively easy for someone to track down the OVA and see it for themselves, unlike needing to read a book or manga. That makes the comparison of pacing, characterization, dialog, and direction more straightforward and relevant, unlike having to note the differences of an adaptation from text or comic book form, different mediums requiring different methods to best tell a story. That almost makes it closer to American remake than it does adaptation. Further, unlike forever-long titles like Speed Racer or Dragon Ball, with their endless story lines and plots, Kite's not even an hour long. I'd think this adaptation's success is more pertinent to the future of that practice than those previous films', since you're comparing movie to movie now, not 2 hour movie to 400+ episodes. I can't wait for the press on this movie, if there's even gonna be any. It doesn't take a genius investigator to track down and watch Kite, uncut no less. "Sam Jackson stars in a film based off a cartoon porn, coming this January". But realistically, it'll go unnoticed and have little advertising. |

Hopefully, the publicity for this film will avoid any connections to the word "anime," considering what happened to Pacific Rim.

An anime movie got finished and doesn't look like garbage? Color me impressed. I'm a big fan of the original OVA, despite some of its more tasteless elements, so I'm all aboard for this one!

Nothing "bad" happened to Pacific Rim. In fact it did fairly well. It just didn't beat Grown Ups 2 at the box office, so everyone mislabeled it as a failure. In contrast, it hit #1 in several other box offices around the world, and has a very impressive following in Japan as well. So I wouldn't call it a "flop" by any means. |

This more looks like "based on" rather than "adaptation."
Many recent movies people don't even know are based on something. (Do people know that World War Z is based on a book? 2 Guns on a graphic novel?)
It's biggest in China. It's weird in that a whopping 75% of its $405 million B.O. comes from overseas. ($405 million puts it 10th worldwide so far in 2013.) |

Yeah, maybe it's harder for me to realize the ultimately inconsequential connection to the OVA only because I'm so familiar with it. Unless it's high profile, very few filmgoers would know the origin of the story, which probably leads to an easier matter of remaking low-profile titles. |

Will be much better than the anime if they do something to change this rather silly scene:

Raikuro: I forgot about that scene. I'm surprised Michael Bay wasn't hired to direct, since that's clearly his MO. I guess he was too expensive.

Test audiences reacted negatively to the film, comparing it to Transformers, Power Rangers, Gundam, Evangelion, etc. Bottom line is, "anime" is a dirty word for most non-anime fans and is code for "avoid at all costs." |
