I picked this title up two days ago and read it last night. And then I read it again last night. Like it's anime counterpart, this series does not fail to please at all. In fact, in my opinion the manga has more going for it than the anime does. I just love the way the character setups are in the manga compared to the other series. Especially Integra. She is a lot more open, and not so serious when compared to the anime, and smiles a lot more. Seras Victoria does not seem to have so much hesitation to killing the ghouls in the manga versus the anime. In fact, she enjoys it. And last of all the gag sense of the manga is tremendous. Just downright funny. A must read. And though I've only read the first volume, it will get itself a Masterpiece rating as well.

Cool, a new Hellsing fan. I completly agree with you. I actually refuse to watch the anime. It's actualy kind of boring to me. I haven't had a chance to see Hellsing Ultimate yet though, but I heard it actually does the manga justice. I love how Seras is a complete psycho in the manga. Also, Alucard just looks cooler, with all the shadows and all. Not sure if I'd give it a Masterpiece, but Excellent works for me. I might rate it higher if the release dates weren't so far apart.... Does anyone know why that is?

It comes out rather slowly in Japan (about one every 10 months, I'd guess) and Dark Horse caught up to the Japanese release last year. So they seem to be waiting until the manga finishes to release the rest. Basically, they seem to choosing one really long gap between 7 and 8 instead of smaller but still long gaps between every volume until the end (probably volume 10).

If I'm not mistaken the magazine that it runs in, Young King, is a monthly released magazine, which would explain why it takes so long for the volumes to come out. As I understand they just released the eighth volume of the Japanese version.

Hellsing...ech. The story is good. The characters are interesting. The art, on the other hand, is pretty bad. I'm often unable to follow the fight scenes.
I like the series, but the art is irritating. Also, the mangaka is insanely lazy.
Similarly, Trigun Maximum is a series with a good story/characters but poor art...except its art problem is much, much worse.

On the contrary, I think the art is a part of the key elements that makes this series turn out to be so good about it.

On the contrary, I think the art is a part of the key elements that makes this series turn out to be so good about it. |
How so? I'm often irritated by its incoherence.

I agree with fighterholic, I think the art adds to the overall mood and tone to the manga. Coolerimmortal, could you explain why you think the art is incoherent? I agree that sometimes the art can look different and he is pretty lazy, seeing how large the release gap is. Doesn't he ask for an assistant throughout some of the manga? I always found that kind of funny.

Well, only seeing glasses on a dark face in the shadows, plus the fact that he's about to kill somebody really gives a dark and creepy yet arousing aura. Like you get an adrenaline rush or something. ANd Seras Victoria enjoying her job?! Where did you see that in the anime?

The art is usually good when it needs to be (read: during action scenes). It's only 'lazy' during the humorous and lighthearted scenes, as far as I remember.

I find it incredibly hard to tell what's going on in a number of the fight scenes. If I recall correctly (it's been over a year), the fight with Rip took me something like 6 readthroughs to finally understand what happened.

Dont' remeber the source, but Hirano Kouta apparently plans on finishing it in ten volumes, which is looking more likely at the moment.

Actually, I find the art in both Hellsing and Trigun/Trigun Maximum are quite good and unique. (The oddly proportioned character were one of the main draws in Hellsing for me, and a double-page in volume ten of Trigun Maximum shows how far Nightow has come.) However, when it comes to the action scenes, I don't have that much trouble for the art in Hellsing, but the ones in Trigun Maximum are absolutely frustrating when first read. I've gone over some of them three, four times, so I understand what happens in why in each individual fight, but that doesn't really excuse Nightow's sloppiness.

I know that Hirano said it in a recent interview in Anime Insider as well as numerous other interviews. I say "probably" because until it is actually finished, ther is a chance something may change.

Nightow can't draw fight scenes. They look cool, but good luck figuring out what the hell is going on. Trigun Maxiimum becomes more frustrating to read with each volume because this issue seems to get worse the longer it goes on. Volume 10 (the most recent U.S. volume) was really bad with this.
I don't recall having much trouble with Hellsing though.
