It has repeatedly occurred to me that there are a number of phrases and terms that are particularly common in anime, just due to the nature of the genre. I'm not talking daily expressions like "soo desu ne" or "yokatta", but something that particularly ties in with the theme of anime. Two of my favorites are:

"ningen ja nai" (not human)

"kono sekai..." (this world)

It seems that there is always some unhuman aspect to someone, and this world somehow always warrant comment and reflection Laughing

What other favorite anime catchwords/phrases have you guys taken note of?

It really depends more on the characters.

If there IS a catchy phrase for me (and lots of others in Latin America) is Ôzora Tsubasa's (Captain Tsubasa) trademark phrase: The [soccer] ball is my friend spoiler[(BALL ha tomodachi) I think I didn't write it right -_-U]

I also got stuck to Himura Kenshin's Oro

"~nyo" is merely a suffix, so I'm not entirely sure it counts as a phrase or term.

Oh gosh, there are so many cool one-liners out there, but I just revel in the awesomeness when somebody crazy shouts (or repeats Twisted Evil ),'Usada!' which means liar.

I also like how in the english dub of 'Big O' Roger Smith shouts,'Big O, it's show time!'.

A slight misapprehension here:

嘘だ! = Uso da! = "That's a lie!"

嘘吐き! = Usotsuki! = "Liar!"

You've been watching Higurashi no naku koro ni.

Laughing

Just take it as an encouragement to buy a japanese dictionary.

I guess maybe since I haven't seen Higurashi~~, the word "uso" (or uso-whatever) doesn't really carry any anime connotations for me...(are lies/liars more common in anime?)

^ That phrase just tends to get used quite heavily in that particular anime. Not to spoil anything but most of the characters tend to fly off the handle when they think someone isn't telling the truth.

Yes, yes I have Smile . Thanks for the quick fix.

I just got abunai'd? I've been dangeroused ... Laughing

Yeah, one of those could come in handy; if you get the chance, and if it doesn't scare the poopers out of you too much, you should check out Higurashi Wink .

I found the first arc to be the most frightening/disturbing. Probably a combination of the general shock factor along with the opening scene. I guess the violence somehow became less disturbing when it got coupled with a plot that required some actual thinking to get around (thus taking my mind off the fact that people would get horribly murdered on screen).

A certain catchphrase that is representative of a large portion of mainstream anime today: "Suki da," (I like you/love you) and the most infamous of them all, "tsuyoku naritai!" (I want to become stronger!)

One of my favorite phrases in anime is what follows: "mono da!" (you are an object!)

There's "I don't want to die" - I can never figure out the exact Japanese phrase only is starts with shin, ends with nai and has a ku in the middle.
