This has got to be the most overrated anime ever. Yes you read that right, and no I will not take it back. I loved it when I watched some of it in the 1st grade, so I rented it to see the rest. It was really not very good at all, and I found it to be quite boring. Does anyone else agree?

I agree, most of the Ghibli films are very childish and family orientated in general. I think most ghibli films are judged by their reputation alone.

When i think Ghibli, i think of the Japanese version of Disney.

To be honest, the only Ghibli film i rate highly is Ocean Waves and that hasn't even been licensed which is truly is a shame.

If you want something decent to watch may i suggest trying Area 88 original OVA series.

Grave of the Fireflys is supposed to be horribly sad and depressing. I have never seen it though.

My Neighbor Totoro was a terrible movie. Terrible plot, ugly characters, and just one huge snorefest.

I agree. Ghibli is pretty much the japanese Disney. Then again Disney's not that great either. Cars sucked huge wads of ****.

I think the only Ghibli film I'd like is Castle of Caliostro. And that's because I like Lupin. I have Howl's Moving Castle and the Nuasicca manga too.

I also think that as long as a movie says "Miyazaki" Or "Disney" on it, it'll get above a 6 at least and will be popular no matter how bad.

Just my two cents.

I quite liked Kiki's Delivery Service. It was a sweet little story with some cute characters and a happy feel to it, which was pretty much what I was expecting.

I love kiki's Deliver Services movie. Yes! You heard me.
The first time I saw it, it was when I was 14 years old. I had to save money to go buy the movie. It is one of my favorite. Spirit Away it is from Disney, and it is a great movie that hit everybody.

Haha, i love your description of Totorro. It really was the most boring piece of crap i've ever seen. I was just waiting for the tumbleweed to pass them by. Lets be honest nothing actually happened, 2 hours of nothing..

Castle of Caliostro on the otherhand is a masterpiece and although directed by Miyazaki, it's not actually a Ghibli film which is probaly why we like it, lol.

Oh yeah sure. Lets just go out with the family and watch Mononoke-Hime and watch people's heads get chopped off and watch the blood spurt out everywhere.

I've been wanting to watch Kiki's for a long time. Even thought it's childish, is it worthwhile? I also like a lot of the Disney movies (Aladdin, The Lion King, Atlantis, Treasure Planet). At least while ago (havn't watched them in years)

I've loved most Ghibli movies over the years and still do. They give me exactly what I'm looking for in an anime movie and I was enjoying them long before I had any clue who Miyazaki was or Ghibli were. The claim that they are rated highly simply out of superficial artist worship seems naive and childish, just as you'd expect from the crowd currently presenting it.

Looks like little more than a troll-fest thread to me, but knock yourselves out, boys.

Just because it's acceptable for a younger audience, I'm not sure it's fair to call it childish. I am an adult, and this is one of my very favorite anime movies.

As to whether it's worthwhile, I think that depends on what you expect to get out of it. If you are looking for action, blood, violence, evil villains, or anything similar, then it may not be for you. It is a story about a girl that goes out into the world on her own for the first time and how she grows from that experience. If that sounds boring to you, then maybe you should give it a pass.

On the other hand, it's a charming, well animated, well acted (both in Japanese and English), heart warming story that puts a smile on my face whenever I watch it. One of the reasons I would not call it "childish" is that while kids can enjoy it for the cute animation and happy story, adults can also get something out of the story about growing up and learning from new experiences in the world -- something most all of us can relate to.

I thought it was good enough for what it was, although it doesn't resemble the titles you mentioned at all. Actually, I'd compare it more to Sabrina the Teenage Witch with a lovely European style town as a background than anything else if I had to compare it to something.

Sounds like Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa might resemble the titles you liked a little more. A bit more action.

I agree. The slice-of-life feeling I get from most of Ghibli's films is what I like the most, especially that of Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro. At the same time, I also like their epic adventure movies, such as Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke. I guess it's just a difference in preference, but the slice-of-life genre happens to be my favorite because of the feeling I receive from the characters. It's far from boring. I like Cars, as well. I would much rather watch any of these than Area 88, which I find to be boring.

Wow, the first half of this thread is just ... wow. You liked it once, now you think it's boring, well that's just great and profound, I'm in awe at how much thought and substance you're putting in to your own topic. But that's it? You thought it was boring? So that makes it the most overrated film ever because it bored you? And from the other responses I'm to understand that the films being family oriented or childish in nature means they're awful or horrible movies?

So the films bored you guys, and there wasn't action and violence and blood or whatever else prevents them from boring you so that means all the movies are awful and that anyone who likes them obviously just likes them because of the Ghibli or Disney name? While some bias might be at play those studios did not get to where they are or achieve any degree of bias by releasing crap that people don't like.

Do you watch a drama looking for a horror film? Or do you watch sci-fi expecting a nature documentary? I should hope not, so why on earth would you watch a light hearted film aimed at younger audiences and expect fast action and mindless violence? Of course, you might not be expecting that and that might not fit your criteria for what doesn't bore you. But there in lies the other problem, you left no substance to your post, no discussion of why it bored you and why you feel the way you do. All I got out of it is a few people hate Ghibli and Disney and someone thinks some of their films are ****. Well good for you, but hardly worthy of discussion as at this point it just seems like aimless bias and hate based on studio names and the fact they create films that don't cater to your specific tastes.

Keonyn: Don't you know it's cool to be hating on popular stuff? Wink

Personally, I've never watched Kiki myself; but the alleged similarity to Totoro would likely guarantee it a nice, cozy little place in my heart. Totoro was heartwarming for me, a sensitive little teary-eyed uncoolness who does not particularly find overly long shonen series appealing.

Edit: By the way, 4KrapSucks, I find it strange that you'd dislike Kiki and at the same time love Metropolis. What gives?
