I just finished watching Suzuka and I would like to find more anime along it's lines. What I'm looking for in particular is some kind of romance anime that isn't harem. Suzuka was a cut above lots of the other romance anime I've seen because it isn't a half dozen girls fawning over one guy. It had a more realistic sense to it than something like Love Hina (despite having nearly the same starting) and thats partly why I liked it so much. The only other I know of thats a non-harem romance(ish) would be Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien but I've already seen that. Can anyone help me out with this?

Love Hina is a harem anime - an anime with many girls fawning over one guy.

Oh, and although I would like a recommendation exactly like blind_assassin, I think the mods don't particularly like recommendation threads right now Wink .

I have seen Love Hina actually. It's pretty much the example of harem anime (harem meaning one guy surrounded by lots of girls). Thats the kind of romance anime I prefer to avoid. It has too many stereo typical characters (the zany weirdo, the nosy drunk, the angry person that tries to live up to everyones expectations, and the overly hostile girl that loves the lead in secret) which kills my interest fast. I won't rant off about Love Hina but even though I did finish it, by the end it was just to add it to my list of completed anime.

I think I'm fine as long as I'm specific. At least I hope I am.

Actually if they are still following this, it won't matter how specific you are. And if they are allowing recommendation threads again, this topic will help you make your openner better.

I'm one who doesn't like to recommend anything unless I see a 'seen all' list. There's no use recommending anything you may have already seen.

Sorry, I found that thread just a second ago. Though I still think I'm pretty much safe in this. Like I said in my opening, the only anime along the lines that I'm looking for is Kimi ga Nozomu Eien and Suzuka (and anyone who suggests Suzuka probably can't help me). I don't think that a pair of anime would really warrant a link to somewhere else that is nearly entirely irrelelvant to what I'm looking for.

Ok, I'll recommend Honey and Clover (and it's sequel). It's a college romance show that involves many love triangles, and a bunch of comedy as well. It's a very well done show, both it and its sequen ranking on the ANN top 10.

I haven't seen Suzuka, so I may be taking a shot in the dark, but I'll give it a try. You may have already seen these (you should consider making a "my anime" list and making it public so people can check what you have seen and liked before), but Oh! My Goddess is a good romance title that has been around for a while. The original OAV has spawned various sequels and spin offs. The OAV is pretty lighthearted, with some comedic elements. I liked it, but it's not one of my favorites in part because Belldandy is so single-mindedly devoted to Keiichi, and as a result I don't think she is a very interesting character.

If you want to go in a completely different direction, you could check out SaiKano. It's a romance story, but it takes place during a horrible world war, and while moving is also very sad (maybe even a little depressing).

There is also Voices of a Distant Star, which is about two people who get separated just when their romance is beginning. It also has a melancholy mood, but is very good.

If you want real romance then i'll recommend you to watch Bokura ga ita.
I love it because there aren't any nonsense awkward situations, and the story is just serious. The lead male character for the first time ins't an idiot and he holds himself like most teenagers would do. This anime is highly mature for the age of 17+ i would think. I'd give you an overview of the story but i don't want to spoil it for you. If you pass the 2 first episodes then i'm confident this'll most become your favorite. I watched 5 episodes and i Had already listed it as one of my favorites regardless i haven't yet watched the ending and that's how much i really think this anime is perfect.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I'll be sure to check them out as soon as I can. And yes, serious anime is preferred over comedy. It doesn't have to be serious 99.99% of the time like Monster, but I'd like to keep away from something like Love Hina if possible.

They're not "irrelevant" just because they don't answer your exact question. There are tools out there that can help you find what you're looking for.

Ever hear of Google? Rolling Eyes
You could try Boys Be, which isn't nearly as serious as KgNE, but it's not a harem, and has no magic/sci-fi in it--it's just a collection of stories about a few guys in high school and their trials and triumphs with women. It's pretty low-key, thoguh there is some fanservice and comedy in there as well.

When I think of Suzuka, the most similar series that pops into my head is Maison Ikkoku. The characters are older than Suzuka's, the male lead is 19 at the start of the series and the female lead is a few years older than that.

It does have it's fair share of wackiness (it IS a Rumiko Takahashi series afterall) but it's more serious than not. There were some relationships between characters in Suzuka that reminded me of Maison Ikkoku, so I think if you liked one, you'd probably like the other.

The only things you may not like about Maison Ikkoku is 1) it's an old series (mid/late 80s) and 2) it's long (96 episodes). But it's my benchmark for romance series, so I can't help recommending it.

The person who mentioned posting a "seen it" list basically said that he wouldn't help if he didn't see one and I replied by saying that since there was only a very select group of anime that describe what I'm looking for (that were both already mentioned) and if I posted a list it would merely confuse what I was asking for. I have a list of my anime already compiled but I don't feel the need to post it since I rarely ask for anime online and I'm usually quite specific. This topic is about as vague as I get in asking for help.

Fair enough, but:
In a sticky thread[/quote], Azathrael wrote:

And from that site...
Anime similar to Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, as recommended by other people. Of course, you'd have to pick through a few descriptions to weed out ones you don't want, but it's a pretty good site nonetheless.
On the "Seen All" listing issue: I'm not sure how long you may have been lurking on these forums, but we used to have many more recommendation threads, especially before the two stickies came up and before Zac/Tony K./Nagisa started locking such threads on sight. Many of us have put a lot of time into answering those threads (in detail, as per ANN's rules), and few things are more frustrating than writing out a few paragraphs and having the OP reply, "Thanks, but I've already seen that one." It's a measure of courtesy to save the time and sanity of those who reply.

It's eerie how accurate the results are sometimes on that site. When I first read the opener in this topic, of the first three series that came to my head, two are on the top 5 in that search and the other one is in the top 10 if you pull up the full results.

This is all I was trying to say, although Zalis said it a lot more courteously, so I apologize if I sounded rude.
