What does everyone think the most popular anime in the US is? And why? I'm not talking stats here, I just mean in general which anime do you find to be circulating your friends in the US, the most? I know a lot of people who watch FMA. I think I'd say thats what I come across the most. Why do I think its the most popular? Well, I think the story is just so easy to like and understand. There's also a magical element to it that everyone can enjoy!

Oh, it has to be Cyber City Oedo.
People rave about how stunning the visuals and sophisticated the storyline is. Personally, I'm more of an MD Geist fan, but the two are both pretty strong. |

Seriously, I follow a lot of anime and I have never even heard of Cyber City Oedo. As for my opinion, I would probably say Fullmetal Alchemist. I know that's a pretty popular anime in the U.S. I actually saw a guy wearing a FMA sweatshirt at an National Broadcasting Society Regional Convention. |

Penguintruth missed the [/sarcasm] tag off the end of his post. When I first saw the title of this thread, I initially thought you just hadn't seen the Top 50 or something, but if you're looking for what anime people are watching who don't happen to spend their time posting on niche internet BB systems then surely some DVD sales data would give you the answer? |

If the attendees of a con are in any way representative of the demographic that views the most anime, I'd have to say Naruto. I went to Kumoricon in Portland a couple weeks ago and was blown away by number of Naruto cosplayers. I'm not a fan of shonen fighting shows to begin with, and I'm even less likely to watch it now.

Like most interests in passing time, it changes. But I can pick out ones that I hear from my friends who I consider a more casual fan (i.e. doesn't go online to talk about anime with strangers, doesn't go to conventions, doesn't consistently download fansubs). Samurai Champloo and Full Metal Alchemist were popular for a while, but recently it has been Hellsing--mostly because of the OVA's. It's not scientifically accurate or what-not, but this is how I assess what's popular for "casual" anime-watchers.
This is in the college-scene, mind you; I'm sure Naruto is up there with high school students (not saying college students don't watch it, just that it may not be as popular as the forementioned). |

Series-wise, it's obviously Naruto. The series not only is popular with newbie anime fans but it surprisingly has a lot of older anime fans, too. Most fans who grew up with DBZ are now fans of Naruto and the show developed a large fanbase in the U.S. even before it was licensed through the widespread of fansubs. It was the number two top-selling manga of 2005, topped only by FMA, and now that the FMA anime has ended in the U.S., Naruto will only continue to rise in popularity. I remember back when I used to download Naruto fansubs it only took me 30 minutes to download a single episode and that was the only unlicensed series I ever downloaded that fast. Despite being dub-only, the single volume Naruto DVDs sold exteremly well, and the uncut boxsets managed to top it and were sold out of both online and offline stores within only a few weeks after its U.S. release. Naruto's popularity may fall once the U.S. gets to the filler-in episodes, but for now there's no denying that Naruto is the current most popular anime series in the U.S. Movie-wise, I think Spirited Away is the most popular anime movie in the U.S. I don't think I even have to explain why, either.

For kids, the most popular anime would probably be Pokemon. We all know how popular it's been and how long ago it started. It's obviously the most popular, for kids.
For teens and up, the most popular anime is probably Cowboy Bebop. I've noticed that many people like, or at least are familiar with, the show, including non-anime fans. It's old. It's good. It's well-known. It's popular. |

Well that's revealing. I was junior in college when the series was first released. |
