So I dunno if this will stay up but it is worth a shot. For those people wondering what to buy in this sale, I figure it would be easier for people to either recommend a title, or request for people to judge a title....
I would like to recommend Haibane Renmei. This series is just beautiful. Everything from the animation to the music. I'm a huge fan of action anime, but this series really changed my whole perspective of how not all anime needs action to enjoy. A very well crafted story full of mystery can keep someone on the edge of their seat too. I just ordered the final volume so I hope the ending doesn't disappoint, even if it did though, I would still highly recommend this title.
I would like to know more about Master Keaton and Gad Guard. I have only heard how great Master Keaton is, but never why. Gad Guard I know used to air on Anime Unleashed but I missed the initial airing. Mixed reviews on that series so just looking for reccommendations.
Gankutsuou vol.1 I would also recommend. It is a good chance to check out the series that everyone has been raving about for the past year. Again another series with a memmorable story and few but amazing action scenes. I normally hate CG in my anime, but this is so well integrated it just didn't bother me at all. At $4/$5, you can afford to give it a try. I know Suncoast pays around $5 cash for a used volume of Gankutsuou so you can always make the money back if you don't enjoy it. I know they don't have the rest of the series, but i hear an awesome DDD sale is just around the corner.

Personally I enjoyed Master Keaton, but then again it's like watching the stepping stones to my beloved Monster. Whereas Monster is this giant story that wraps up after 74 episodes. Keaton has a self contain story that end within each episode, however the final two episode are directly related. That said Master Keaton is one of those series where you get so many genre it's hard to classify it, however it's one of the few animes that I had a good time with, even if there aren't any really giant story arc.
Till next time,
Delta Kiral
P.S. I second Gankutsuou, if you have not had the chance to see volume one I would put that in your list, I personally think it's one of the best overall anime out on the market.

This is an excellent idea for a thread. I'm actually buying plenty of titles relatively blindly, but a couple series I can recommend.
1. I enjoyed the excellent visuals and interesting story of Last Exile. It's funny how long volume one sat on my shelf before I finally watched it, but when I did I suddenly wanted to see the whole series right away. It's a fairly serious series in my view without much in the way of routine comedic relief. The light comments that do come out really struggle to have much impact when they're surrounded by such a serious background. If you like a long and serious series about warfare and honor, renegades and opportunists, and victims and victors, then Last Exile just might be for you.
2. The polar opposite of Last Exile is Mao-Chan. The world as we know it is under attack in both series, but in Mao-Chan it's the rare serious comments that struggle to gain any traction against such a cute and silly backdrop. Mao-Chan is not the kind of show I would normally bump into, but I'm still glad I did. The ludicrously absurd concept of having a first-world nation place the majority of its military budget into funding a trio of elementary school girls is actually a lot of fun to watch. The cuteness factor is off-the-charts here, so if you can't stand cutesy series you probably won't like this one either. But, if you can enjoy a fairly random and sometimes repetitive series with a lot of cuteness overload and don't need everything to be easily explainable or even comprehensible then this series might be for you.
I also thought about recommending El Hazard, but I haven't yet finished either of those series just yet (soon!) and they're already out-of-stock, apparently for good. The first Gatekeepers was a fun and lighthearted series I really enjoyed, but it looks like you can only get three out of the eight discs in that series. Human Crossing is perfect for those folks who want their anime based almost entirely in the 'real' world with no alien technology, ancient magic, bizarre cults, or chosen children operating behind the scenes. The first Jubei Chan was one of my favorite series, so I'm really hoping that J2 turns out to have similar qualities. Chobits and Strawberry Eggs were notable for pushing the boundaries of acceptable R1 themes in their day, but I'm not sure there's enough real substance to warrant recommending them to average anime fans who don't already own them today.

Thirded, Gankutsuou is so different from EVERYTHING else on the market, it'll either draw you in like nothing else, or it will turn you off. I really recommend getting this first volume, it's such a cheap and convenient way to sample the first four episodes so you can determine whether or not you dig the visuals and story changes. I had to buy the whole damn series at relatively close to MSRP, and didn't watch it until I had all the DVD's. It was a great risk, but I'm very impressed by this series, and I think it will probably end up on many top ten lists years from now.

While not actually part of this particular promotion, I couldn't help but notice that the entire ($500+) Card Captor Sakura series is on sale for $80. w00t!

I'd recommend Master Keaton if you're a fan of Detective Conan and that sort of genre (episodic detective stories).
MK isn't as linear and shounen-esque as DC, in that every episode is a mystery and full of upbeat comedy, but there are several of those situations throughout the series as well.
Other episodes can range anywhere from brief history lessons, to low-key comedy, to literal symbolism, to slice of life. I found all of it adding a good deal of diversity and would say it's good for older audiences around 13+ years, at least to comprehend some of those subtlties.
It's a very underrated anime, and $4-5 a piece is a steal. Go for it!

If you can handle the subject matter, I highly recommend Koi Kaze. It might not be the greatest series in terms of animation, but it is one of the most well-written and compassionate anime series on the market. It's a compelling romance series, but forbidden because it deals heavily with incest. I also second daxomni's recommendation for Last Exile.

Geneon Discontinues Sherlock Hound (10:27 PM EDT): According to the latest mailer update, Geneon has set a 10/31/2006 date for the discontinuation of Sherlock Hound as an orderable product from them. |
Just thought I'd throw this in there... Sherlock Hound is in the sale, and if you like older, family-friendly fantasy anime, this one is a great choice. Hayao Miyazaki did some work on some early episodes, and in general, it's 26 episodes of adventure and mystery-solving, and c'mon, it's Sherlock Holmes...with dogs:!: It also features a great English dub with British accents, though being an ignorant American, I can't tell how good the accents really are. So, this'll probably be the best chance to ever pick the series up.

Where can I get a complete list of the RightStuf promotional DVDs? I went to their website but there wasn't anything specific outlining what was on sale.

I got that the first week it was on sale I'm going to convention this weekend, and if the Read or Die dvd cd bundle is still on sale, I don't know whether I want to dip back into the Geneon special or that one. damn you right stuf!! |
When was this first put on sale? I was a bit dissapointed when I saw it a few weeks ago since I had just bought the two box sets about 6 weeks ago for about $80 each. Although I do like having the boxes, so I guess it's not that bad.
On Topic:
I have two recommendations for those still wanting to order but need a few more to complete the 10 or 25.
Requiem From the Darkness a.k.a. Hundred Stories - This is my comment from my public list:
I wrote: | Quite a unique and interesting series. I enjoyed almost every single moment in it, even when there was nothing going on I could spend quality time taking in all the visuals. It is very cleverly crafted, from the storyline to the animation to the characters; it is almost enough to overwhelm the senses and yet balanced well enough where I had enough time to take it in. Not to say that I don't want to see it again because I am sure there are plenty of things that I missed and the series practically demands at least a second viewing. I know that a lot of times people talk about unique characters but with this series it isn't just talk, every character has so many levels to them that it is hard to discern true intentions, much like with real people. The stories are filled with quality build up, sure there is plenty of shock value, but it is justified in the plot and not just something to grab one's attention. The animation almost tells its own story; all the warped imagery and character designs along with some creative use of colors suddenly changing from overly rich to flat and sometimes inverting, it doesn't just add to the story, it completes it. It is much more than just worth watching. |
And my other recommendation is one of my favorites, the Rumiko Takahashi Anthology. From my public list:
I wrote: | I love all the different stories in this set with all the different characters. Everything from everyday life to the supernatural to unexpected occurrences, this series has it all. Also, considering they are all single episodes, it never felt like I was watching an underdeveloped story or character. Each story has its own unique and well crafter plot with its lovable and interesting characters, which is to be expected from something based on Rumiko Takahashi's work. I also love the occasional cameo a character from one story will do in one of the others, it's fun to pick these scenes out. And they might be a bit cheesy but I love the openning and ending themes, they just fit incredibly well with this mish mash of a series. And since all of the episodes are independent of each other I can always watch one here and there at random. Overall it is just incredibly entertaining and fun. |

It had the same deal the previous week. I wonder why Rightstuf is liquidating it? is the license expiring soon? I know they've been trying to liquidate their Kimagure Orange Road or a while now...i bought it straight from Animeigo this summer shortly before their license expired...much cheaper than the Rightstuf offer..never thought I'd say that

If you're talking about Card Captor Sakura, probably because those "Clow Boxes" have been released and are just much cheaper than buying the individual volumes.
Same thing happened with Trigun before this sale. Since there already is a boxset, 2 tins, and the new Remix being released, all 8 volumes were available for like $60.
Oh and RightStuf also has R.O.D. TV 1-7 plus the 2 soundtracks for $80. I was upset this series wasn't part of the sale, but it's still a really good deal at $80.

i think the rod dvd bundle was what spawned this OT discussion to begin with...I personally would rather get my hands on the Trigun remixes over the other releases though. I love me some surround sound. plus i like the manga style covers much much more
