Just now I looked at the locked thread by dipstudent in which he said nothing at all. Now, even though it's against the rules, other users were posting in this thread. Now don't get me wrong, I believe all rules should be inforced, but I think it's quite ridiculous how Nagisa bagged on all the other posters and did not mention one thing about dipstudent's ridiculous and pointless post.

I think this kind of nonsense should be dealt with in a harsh manner. Why not ban these users who have nothing better to do then start these bullsh!t threads? Obviously they have no reason to be here.

I know some people actually try to post things but they get locked because of the one-liner rule and many others. This is totally fine. It happens. I started out like that. But these ridiculous posts are totally uncalled for.

I guess the main reason for this post is to just to sort out the good guys from the bad guys. Why should the mods be yelling at the regular posters when there is larger matters at hand. That's like being a cop and seeing someone kill somebody but not going over to arrest them because your giving someone a parking ticket. Why do we get yelled at and get threats of ban when were intellectual people and have discussions and are generally great forum users as opposed to these idiots.

I have a feeling I'm not alone on this but I'd be extremely surprised if no one else felt this way.

Maybe you all need a refresher:

Teh Rules wrote:
8b) No "Back Seat Moderating" - If you know a thread is going to be locked, do not post in it, posting in threads that are clearly going to be locked will be dealt with as "trolling " type behaviour. Do not berate posters for breaking the rules, that is the job of the ANN moderators and admins. Please report the post and, if you think it is necessary, contact a moderator or admin.

I know bolding the entire thing wasn't necessary, but some of you seem to really look past it. On occasion, I'll leave a thread open if the general concensus is that the author is a complete and utter nitwit that needs a rude awakening of some sort, but spam is different.

More than likely, the author of these spam threads are either stupid people, trolls, or bots (mostly bots). In any case, I see no point in replying to these threads because they'll simply be locked and banned, then we can all move on.

Recently, I've had fewer and fewer replies to these kinds of threads. But when it happens, I get an individual e-mail in my account every time someone reports one of you for clearly violating this rule (most of them coming from 4KrapSucks in the latest "blank" thread).

The general idea of having to check all of the reports I get when they are simply attempts at wittiness or naïve backseat modding seems like a huge waste of time that could've easily been avoided by you all not posting in the first place.

It may not seem like much trouble from your side, but modding the forums, checking reports and unreporting them, deleting/editing posts, and making replies to all the threads I lock and PMs I get takes a lot of time. And before I know it, I barely had any time to watch anime for the day.

Getting to your analogy, the mods here are basically special ops without guns. If we see terrorists (human spammers) and zombies (spam bots), we have no way to deal with them to a full extent because the government (senior staff) only gave us the power to handcuff and transport them to prison (lock and move the threads to the staff-only forum for eventual banning) and not execute them on the spot (permanent ban).

However, I am confident after this series of events that we'll get more than enough guns and ammo to carry around. And should some of you continue this behavior, we won't hesitate to shoot you either; maybe with stun guns (temporary bans), maybe a sniper rifle with armor piercing rounds (ban your account and IP address). Of course it depends on the individual severity, but most of you are good people and knowledgeable enough that I shouldn't have to do anything.

I generally can't stand real cops because they never manage to catch every single perp, but being a mod has made me empathize a lot more. I hope you would all do the same for us.

Anyway, the point is to please stop making things difficult for us by disobeying something so simple as "don't reply." If it looks like spam, it probably is 95% of the time. Just report it and be on your merry way. Let the staff take care of it.

Spammers, bots, and stupid people are one thing, but as Tony K. points out, the people on this forum who've been around for awhile and have hundreds or thousands of posts should know better, and that's what frustrates the mods more than people making blank threads or ads for V1agra and other wonderful drugs. I myself got a couple of PMs telling me not to backseat mod, back in the day. Nagisa's response on that thread seemed pretty much standard to me. As "cops" or whatever, the staff here have my respect, as long as they don't break into my house at 8:30 on a Sunday morning Evil or Very Mad

Laughing Nice analogies Tony K. hahah. And I definitely get where your coming from. I still think that you guys should use a sniper rifle on dipstudent, with armor piercing rounds of course. Wink

I'm actually curious as to how the blank thread was created in the first place since forum software usually won't allow it, I remember once doing something similar while fiddling on some forum somewhere but cannot remember where or how or what forums software it was (and don't want to be banned for trying to figure it out Razz )

My thinking on banning people would be if the Mods had the ability to ban, there'd be a lot less people here. No offense, the people who do post stupid threads need to be disciplined, but to what extent?

Sounds like something you need to take up with 4KrapSucks, not us. There's no reason to report every single post in a thread like that one. One report would suffice to draw your attention to the thread, where you can look at the thread and see a whole bunch of other posts that are breaking the rules.

Alternatively, why not go to Yahoo! or some other free webmail service and make an e-mail account solely for post reports? That way they won't clutter up your regular e-mail box.

EDIT: Also, like I told Nagisa, it's worth considering turning on e-mail activation for new accounts. It stops bots dead in their tracks.

That's another story. Zac's not the one usually in the non-site-related forums on this site. A majority of the threads locked or the spammers that come up are usually in the anime forum. And we all know for a fact that Tony K. and Nagisa are the ones normally patrolling that section. I didn't see him too often in the anime section though.

This is not a critique, just a personal observation (I hope it's not too off topic, as a general comment).

When I first came here, I found the way the mods handled the place somewhat different from how I had seen it done in most other forums that I patron. It seemed like an oddly mixed bag to me, in that they were apparently much stricter on some issues (which I had previously thought of as non-issues), and rather tolerant in other areas where I had expected some moderating measures. But at least they're very consistent, and clear about the rules, and once I had finally figured out this modus operandi, I have not been surprised about (or disagreed with) any moderating actions I have witnessed since. Consistency has a lot going for it Smile

The only thing that's stupid is that it's the same small group of people who just can't resist posting some useless, pointless comment in a thread that's so obviously going to be locked. Repeat offenders should be punished more than first timers (or bots).

First timers, maybe. Bots, I don't see how that's possible. A bot will never contribute anything other than useless spam and deserves to be permabanned on sight. It would be rather difficult to one-up a permaban.

True enough. A favorite forum of mine (not an anime-related one) easily tolerates snappy/witty/funny one-liners and day-to-day chatty talks but would come bearing down on excessive swearing.

Nonetheless, the consistency of the moderating platform here allows me to adapt well enough. It gets really strict at times but I blame that on the frequency of the forum traffic, being a major anime portal site and all. And we all know how many idiots are out there in the net.

I don't know the backstory (where you told him, or how, or when), but I'd like to support this idea. Human spammers will be there but pathetic "V1agra/R0l3x/h0us3w1fe" bot spams would no longer bother the forum.

Nothing special, just a simple PM after dipstudent's second topic got locked. I actually brought it up in the first topic the bot made (why it wasn't banned after that one got deleted I don't know but that's water under the bridge now), and I'm pretty sure I've asked about it before today as well.

I think he was saying the rule violations were mainly from 4Krap, not the reports. You've seen his posts, right?
