The more anime shows I watch the more I want to visit Japan someday. Japan seems like a very interesting country with its unique architecture and culture. Maybe anime shows make Japan look alot better than it really is, but seeing it in real life is something I really want to do sometime soon. Does anyone else feel the same way as I do?

[EDIT: Sort of off topic, so I gave it that label. -TK]

I've been to Japan and as an anime fan and a person who appreciates Japanese culture and history, it was everything that I expected it to be and more. One thing that you have to be careful of not disillisioning yourself with, that although there are alot of aspects in anime that accurately represent Japanese life in many ways, the people you meet in Japan are everyday, ordinary people just like you and I. People in real life Japan do not behave in the eccentric, hyperactive or overfriendly manner that they often do in anime. One thing that I noticed about Japan that I already had second-hand knowledge from watching anime is the unique urbanization of the country. Cities feel so compact, with the sheer number of restaruants, stores, bars, etc you come across by walking just a few blocks. Yet you could walk for hours and always see something unique or just find more interesting stuff. It really is amazing, and I think any type of otaku intersted in Japanese culture would not be disappointed by their trip. But don't make it too evident that you are an otaku: Do a variety of stuff; visit shrines and parks, see a sumo match, eat okonomiyaki, meet people, go to the beach, ride the train to an unknown stop (ie don't just go to anime/video/games stores).

(100th post--WOOO!)

My wife and I are planning on going to Japan in 2008. We want to have enough time to learn enough Japanese to vaguely understand what is being said.

We want to experience the full anime/manga/Jpop culture with full otaku immersion. But, we also want to spend considerable time in the country going to shrines and visiting the mountains. If my kung-fu training is going along fairly well, I might seek out an amatuer Pride fight for fun.

Personally, I think it will be a blast.

Oh, you ruined my plans. I was actually planning on going after i graduate high school this year, and i was basically going to do that and maybe ride the trains and visit mount fuji(correct me if i'm wrong). I also love cities as in i like to just walk the streets of NYC and whatnot so i was planning on doing a lot of that.

I wonder what would be happening to me if I hadn't lived in Japan for a good nine years. But my getting into anime really started when I came back here. By reading Genshiken I have been able to figure out what kind of house I want to live in. A 1DK piled up with anime, manga, and games with a computer and a TV to accompany me Wink . A warning to those who are gamers but aren't Japanese: if you are an intermediate fighting game player, DO NOT TRY TO CHALLENGE a Japanese player to Street Fighter. You may regret it for the rest of your life Shocked

Problem is certain Japanese students when being taught English is they're afraid if they don't get it perfect, they'll be ridiculed. Another thing is they aren't getting enough gaijins to come in to teach the language to the Japanese. English, if it's you're business, is very big in Japan, especially if you're a gaijin and you know how to speak Japanese.

You realize it's very expensive to live there, right?

(Or so I've heard....)

Yeah!! Amen to that brother. That's where I'm going once I get out of school.

Well, the experience is good. Fortunately I've got people in Japan that I know, so I might get an easy start.

Yup. My uncle before he got married was living in a 1K in Tokyo and was paying around between 200000 ($2000) and 300000 ($3000) yen a month. Fortunately his work was paying for rent.

It's only the highest costing area to live in in the world >_> That aside, the pay evens it out as well. it's like saying "Gas is $4 a gallon, but we're all getting paid $30 an hour." Of course, not all places pay well in Japan, but then again a 6 tatami apartment isn't that much either, though it IS only 6 tatamis big (that's about the size of my living room).

Yes, I'd say that most anime portray Japan in a fairly unnatural light. I'm no expert on Japanese culture, but I found the real Japan to be somewhat different than what you see in anime. I was only there for a few days myself but I've heard similar stories from other folks who lived and studied and worked in Japan for several months strait. Japan isn't a bad place to visit, and many an able-bodied otaku will probably end up there eventually, but there's a reason some travel agents will give you an odd look when you ask about visiting Japan.

Compared to some of the more common vacation spots in Asia, Japan can seem somewhat snobby and unwelcoming. And, as I'm sure you've already heard, it's surprisingly overpriced for nearly everything outside of the raw basics. Also, once you get well outside of Tokyo you might even find Japan to be positively anti-gaijin in some respects. Learning about Japan and exploring Japan is fun, naturally. Just don't let the hazy rose-colored image portrayed in many anime series fool you. Japan can seem surprisingly ordinary at times, with an appropriately drab backdrop of look-alike cookie cutter buildings littered among a rather staid and stoic populace seemingly expressing itself primarily through its commonality.

It would probably be pretty cool to live in Japan. The only problem is I don't know anyone in Japan, I'm white, and I can't speak Japanese...
