No way! I just opened up my new issue of Shonen Jump today (Number 46), and I read that the "first season" (first 52 episodes) of Naruto will be ending on September 16, and with that, there will be no new episodes of Naruto for quite some time!

I can't believe Cartoon Network and Viz Media would cannibalize their own profits this way! What better way to decrease interest in a series than to stop showing new episodes of it? At this rate, instead of the series ending after five years or so, it will end in eight or more in the US, or possibly less with a mad rush to finish the series at the end! What are they thinking?

I'm just shocked here because I never thought they would be as stupid as this. This delays DVD releases and lets the manga to continue at its snail pace. When nothing is happening, interest is lost. It's just all almost unbelievable to me...and I'm sick of American companies doing BS like this...

Well, on the flipside, they have to stop eventually. Not only does dubbing a show take time, as a lot of the actors aren't doing just Naruto, but if the show were to get too far ahead CN would have to stop and wait the Japanese version of the show to get so far ahead. Right now just enjoy the show while it's showing some of the best episodes of the series, IMO of course.

This is why I hate ridiculously long shounen shows.

Count me out of both of these anime.

Thing is, at the current weekly rate they show episodes (or is it biweekly? someone fill me in?), we're still three years behind Japan in terms of episodes, so this doesn't really make much sense.

Unless they plan on removing the last 80 or so episodes :p

I know. I'm an InuYasha fan, too. You have no idea how mad I was a few weeks ago, and you can bet I sent a "nice" email to Adult Swim as a result. Wink

This really makes no sense. In both countries, Naruto is aired weekly. Naruto started airing in the US about three years after it started airing in Japan. Realistically, we can't catch up to Japan. If we both had continued at these rates, it would have taken us about three years to finish up the series after it had finished up in Japan.

How does reruns of the Naruto anime effect the pacing of the release of the Naruto manga? Whether the anime was still going to be aired in new episodes weekly or not, the manga still would've continued at the same pace it's been going at regardless. The manga and the anime are two entirely different things and neither one effects the other at all. I fail to see the connection here. In any event, so the Naruto dub is showing reruns. Who cares? Most shows on American TV are aired in reruns sooner or later. This is nothing really new and since you're apparently American, you should be used to this already. Dubbing is a long process and the companies need enough time to dub the episodes before they're aired on TV without being rushed. Plus, Cartoon Network only orders a certain number of episodes at a time to air with most of their shows. Ordering too many episodes at once can be very expensive, especially when it comes to anime. Not only do the dubbing companies need more time to record the rest of the episodes, but the networks also need more time to make money to order the next batch. Cartoon Network doesn't get Naruto episodes every week for free, you know. Besides, if you're really that impatient to find out what happens next, you can watch the fansubs or read the manga until they start back up, but American TV airing reruns of shows is nothing new. The Naruto ratings aren't going to be affected by this nor is Cartoon Network, so sit back, relax, and get used to living in America already.

If the anime caught up with the manga, manga sales would drop. Therefore, Viz Media and Shonen Jump would be forced to increase production of the manga to get ahead of the anime again to keep sales up. Why is all this, you ask? Because the majority of people who buy the Naruto manga buy it to see what happens next as soon as possible.

Me. Undoubtedly, many other people care, too.

True, American shows get reruns all the time, but why should that apply to anime? Also, why should I just "get used" to this? So is it that you believe people should just "live with" things they don't like?

This is something that always gets me. Why is it that simply dubbing voices into a show takes so long over here, while creating the entire show (animation, music, sound, voices) is done on a weekly basis in Japan? I understand the difficulties in getting the dubbed voices to actually look like their coming out of the characters' mouths, but seriously -- it's just insane that it can take this long.

Cartoon Network knows Naruto is one of their hottest currently airing shows, so to just drop that momentum is asinine and suicidal. I cannot believe they do not have enough money for more episodes of Naruto. Really, they should have bought more during the airing of the "first season".

I have been reading the manga since the first issue of Shonen Jump was released over here (really, since Issue 0). I do not plan to stop, but the release schedule of the manga that Viz Media has implemented over here is so slow it's almost sickening. We get the equivalent of one to one-and-a-half (or two, at best) episodes per month.

And I refuse to watch fansubs. I'm not dealing in that crap.

Again, while it is true that reruns of American shows are nothing new, there is no reason for this to happen with anime airings.

As for the Naruto ratings, I am positive they will be lower than they could have been this time next year, and Cartoon Network will notice and feel it.

Finally, as for "getting used" to living in America, it's people like you (assuming) who don't do anything about things that bother them that makes this American culture and society the very passive creature that it is today.

This may be an indication that they don't plan on airing the fillers on Cartoon Network. You calculated that it may take 8 or more years to finish the series. Is that counting fillers? If so, and if they do plan on taking out the fillers, then it would result in a little bit over one year less to complete the series.

Anyway, people should see this as an opportunity to catch episodes that they've missed and rewatch the sick Zabuza fights and good parts of the Chuunin Exams.

I have a hard time believing that Viz won't do the fillers. Unless they plan to only release them on DVD. My guess is that they'll have to purchase the filler in their licensing deal. There is a good chunk of filler now and there will be plenty more in the future, the Japanese studio will make money off of that if at all possible.

Expect most people who watch the Naruto dub on Cartoon Network are dubbies who probably don't even know the manga exists. The DBZ anime was always ahead of the English manga for years and DBZ is one of the most popular anime shows in the U.S. If DBZ can survive with its anime version airing ahead of its manga releases, I'm pretty sure Naruto can. It takes American companies longer to dub a show than it does for the Japanese to produce a show because anime is a niche and expensive market in the U.S. whereas in Japan anime is much cheaper and an important part of Japanese pop culture, thus the Japanese anime studios are much larger and have more money they can afford to use to produce anime weekly.

Meanwhile, dubbing studios are much smaller and because anime isn't as popular in America, it makes importing and dubbing the shows much more expensive and much more time consuming. Naruto is one of Cartoon Network's currently hottest airing anime shows, but it isn't one of their hottest airing properties. Any of their American cartoons has higher ratings than Naruto. Once again, despite Naruto's popularity, anime is still a niche market which makes buying the episodes much more expensive for Cartoon Network than buying more American cartoons would be. American animation is also Cartoon Network's main focus, so concentrating more on airing more American cartoons than airing more episodes of a niche show like Naruto is going to be Cartoon Network's highest priority. Plus, buying imports is almost always much more expensive in general than buying domestic products. Naruto may be one of Cartoon Network's most biggest hits, but it isn't the only one they have. They have to use the money they make for other shows, too.

Firstly, aqquiring materials, which considering how draconian Japanese licensors are, can take a very long time. Then theres translating the script, and casting. Then you have to go through the ADR process of identifying lip-flaps, adjusting lines to fit, so on and so forth. Then you have to get all of the actors in one at a time to record their lines, and a lot of the actors haven't actually seen the material before. You then need to do re-takes (though this happens with some things more than others), you need to basically synch that up with the video, make sure the SFX/music is right, compose new music if nessecary, and then hand it out as appropriate. It's a very time-consuming process, especially if say, Naruto, isn't the only thing you're doing.

Japan can get all of that done in a week because they've appropriated the correct budget and staff to churn out one episode a week, which is probably considerably more of a budget than they'd have for dubbing the show. On top of this, Japanese recordings are done at the same time as the animation production, because generally Japanese tracks do not match the lip flaps on screen. They're also done via group recordings, which can be considerably quicker (they don't have to wait for Beep cues or whatever, they just follow the storyboards or whatever kind of animation they've recently finished).

Let's hope so. Because I love Naruto (and other Shonen Jump titles). We can't live without it. Sad
