Key,
Would you please combine the Cowboy Bebop nominations into one "Cowboy Bebop World" nomination.

It's pretty ridiculous to have two nominations for the same series, and the majority feel the universe > Ganymede.

I'm okay with the change of my initial nomination.

Let me know if you need us to go back and update our posts so it's consistent in the thread.

Thanks. Smile

Yes, I will combine the Cowboy Bebop entries for my next update (probably late tonight).

Nominating:

I'd held off on writing this one up because I don't have my copy of the series at hand (it's on loan) and this isn't a well-documented series online. Hence some details, especially some additional Important Locations, may get adjusted later.

New Yogo Empire

Series: Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit

Magic/Technological Base: Medieval Asian with significant spiritual and minor magical elements.
Important Locations: Kosenkyo (imperial capital), Yashiro (Yakoo village), Kanbal (heroine's home country), Misty Blue Mountains (range separating New Yogo and Kanbal), Nayug (spirit realm)
Important Races/Groups: Yogo (settlers from across the sea who founded New Yogo), Yakoo (indigenous people), Ra Runga (Egg Eaters), Hunters (servants of the Emperor), Star Readers
Description: New Yogo is a medieval setting with a distinct Chinese influence in its Imperial architectural styles and organization, though it has many of its own distinct architectural and cultural elements. It is a setting where the Mikado rules with divine authority and is advised by Star Readers, where the technically-conquered Yakoo people have so thoroughly integrated with the Yogo that no distinct racism or prejudice exists and some Yakoo cultural elements (or at least the reasons behind them) have faded or been lost. The Yogo, as the Star Readers eventually discover, have also lost parts of their own history or had them buried under layers of propaganda, resulting in critical - and very nearly tragic - gaps in their knowledge about a centennial event which forms the basis for the series' plot. According to Yakoo custom, the real world Sagu is paralleled by the spirit world Nayug, and while crossings between the two is normally difficult, the centennial event brings the two worlds closer together.
What makes the World-Building Great: New Yogo is one of the most richly-developed of all fantasy anime settings. Over the course of the series it displays a broad mix of architectural styles, distinct fighting styles, customs, legends, record-keeping methods, songs, and even gambling methods. It thoroughly explores how propaganda can influence accurate accounts of history and the impact of cultural decay and creates a fascinating spirit realm as well as fairly specific mechanics for crossing over to it.

Nominating:

World of Beast Player Erin

Series: The Beast Player Erin

Magic/Technological Base: Medieval Asian
Important Locations: Tai-Koh region, Shin-Oh region, the Kazalm Ohju Breeding School
Important Races/Groups: the Mist People, the royal family of Shin-Oh, the Grand Duke's family from Tai-Koh
Description: The world of the Beast Player Erin is divided between two regions, Tai-Koh and Shin-Oh. In the Tai-Koh region dragon-like creatures, Touda, are breed in order to use them during wartime and protect the kingdom. The main character, Erin, is interested in them. However, because of the vicissitudes of life she ends up in Shin-Oh region and takes an extreme liking to beasts called Ohjo. As the story progresses Erin learns more about them and the truth behind the creation of the Shin-Oh country that has been passed down to her by a member of the Mist People. The Mist People are an ethnic group that is easily recognizable because of their green hair and green eyes.
What makes the World-Building Great: Just like in the other Uehashi's story, Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit, the world of Beast Player Erin is well-developed. Things such as customs, legends, and different mindsets of people play a crucial part in the plot and lead to an emotional climax, which not only is a power struggle, but also a conflict of two different visions for the country's future - the traditional vision of Nugan and the progressive vision of his elder brother, Shunan.

Tris8, I'll help you out. This'll be my last nomination though.

Nominating

The Noein Multiverse

Franchise: Noein: To Your Other Self

Magic/Technological Base: Sci-Fi

Important Locations: Hakodate (Japan), La'cryma, Shangri-La

Important Groups: The Dragon Knights, ABCOM, The Council and Armies of Shangri-La

Description: Noein's universe is one that operates under two key assumptions: the acceptance of the Multiverse Theory of Quantum Mechanics, and the existence of quantum beings which exist on what would be the classical level here. With superposition on a macro level, all possible futures exist as uncollapsed quantum states. Providing coherence and resolving the possible world into what we would call existence requires an observer. Haruka, an elementary schooler in Hakodate, is the Dragon Torc, a girl with the power to observe possible futures by imagining them, a leap most people cannot take. Noein, with the help of his collective in Shangri-La, seeks to remove this dimensional multiplicity by scrolling through countless dimensions, observing them, and influencing them toward one of two future dimensions: Shangri-La, a peaceful yet unsettling paradise, and La'cryma, a world devastated by the actions of Shangri-La on the dimensions unfit for Noein's dream. On La'cryma, citizens live underground and struggle for survival, and the altered humans known as the Dragon Knights oppose the ornate colossi of Shangri-La.

What makes this world-building great: Noein's multiverse is an exploration and exposition of the strange properties of quantum mechanics by taking these properties to the classical level. One's understanding and appreciation of the the multiverse is often directly linked with an understanding of these quantum mechanical principles. Between conversations with the resident expert on Earth about the hard science and discussions with actual quantum beings about their intuitive understanding, a significant part of what makes this worldbuilding great is the show's ability to easily and organically convey these often counter-intuitive ideas. Hakodate is very faithful to its real world counterpart, and the scenes which take place there are among the most immersive I've ever seen. Your sense of direction and relation to landmarks is often preserved between changes in location, to the point where you feel like you know the entire layout of the town. This sense of familiarity is very important when the show starts introducing new dimensions and exploring them in great detail. Slight changes in the future become readily apparent and create tension, and the completely unfamiliar dimensions of La'cryma and Shangri-La are fully fleshed out. In a multiverse where understanding the setting is key to understanding the story and characters, Noein does a fantastic job introducing and immersing the vierwer.

Nominating:

Setting of Tears to Tiara

Series: Tears to Tiara

Magic/Technologial Base: Late Antiquity-inspired high fantasy
Important Locations: Erin (initial home isle of Gael clan), Albion (new home isle), Avalon (castle), Londinium (Divine Empire-controlled city), Palladium (massive tower, setting of late episodes), Gorsedd Arawn (location of this setting's "sword in the stone"), Heaven
Important Groups/Races: Gael clan, Brigantes clan, Divine Empire, White Spirits, elves (various subraces), giants, dragons
Description: The series is set a thousand years after an epic war in which the fallen White Spirit Arawn and his close ally, the Elf King Pwyll, led a successful rebellion against Heaven to ensure mankind's place in the world and free them from the oppressive control of the White Spirits. In that time some human groups have taken to clannish cultures while others have formed great, highly-organized empires. (The Divine Empire is clearly patterned off of the Roman Empire.) Elves, meanwhile, have largely retreated from visibility in the world, although they still linger in places and their bloodlines manifest in some human clans, especially the Gaels. It is a setting where magic exists but is hardly omnipresent, the most powerful effects can be manifested by special Songs using the ancient language (Latin), the undead can walk, and powerful artifacts abound.
What Makes The World-Building Great: Although it uses many common fantasy elements, the setting is a unique mishmash of elements from Celtic, Arthurian, and Christian mythologies, with some otaku-focused anime elements thrown in for good measure. (House elves wear traditional maid outfits, you see.) It has an involved backstory which takes a very inventive approach on how humanity is helped beyond its humble origins to become the world's dominant race. It has surprisingly involved metaphysical elements while still maintaining the spirit of a fantasy RPG world.

Nomination:
The CLAMP universe

Series: Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles
First World: Clow Country
Important Locations: Varies by world=Supernatural; Near Future; Historical with Magical Elements; Low Fantasy; Sci-Fi

Important Locations: (Note some worlds were left out in the anime adaptation) Clow Country, Acid Tokyo, Shara Country, Outo Country, Lecourt, Piffle World, Nihon Country, Koryo Country, Shura Country, Jade Country, Hanshin Republic, etc.
Important Races/Groups: lots of CLAMP characters; descendants of Clow

Description: The CLAMP universe contains several worlds that are each heavily inspired by previous CLAMP manga. Majority of the “countries” or “worlds” involve using some form of magic or technology that is unique to that world. In order to leave, the main four characters must collect the feathers available inside that world and bring them back to the main heroine Sakura.

Why it's Great: For CLAMP fans, it’s a fan made version of “Where’s Waldo?” Almost every single world contains characters, locations, items, or powers that came from one of the many manga created by the four artists. Rarely will the characters land into a world that doesn't contain some shout-out to a past manga. Some countries are even directly lifted from their original source. For non-CLAMP fans, the amount of detail that went into each country in terms of clothing, societal norms, or culture is quite amazing. Some have influences from Korean or European while others can be more high tech or even a barren wasteland.

There are no rules to this, other than the account isn't a bypass of another under moderation or ban, which I don't believe pertains to you.

In addition, you do not have to vote throughout the tournament. You can vote for your own nomination, up until it's no longer in the running, if you want.

It's what I do.

Other times, I wait until the last two are standing, and pick the underdog.
Very Happy

Voting for:

Yogo
World of Beast Player Erin
Setting of Cowboy Bebop

Once Key finalizes his entry, I may have some small suggestions. I had just finished brushing up on the series and was about to start a draft. Glad, Key beat me to it since he is a great writer, and the odds are good the final product will be solid.

Lastly, I think we should extend the nomination phase another week. Nominations are still coming in at a good rate, and more importantly some seemingly seed quality picks are only getting nominated now. I forgot who said, but the bottleneck seems to be the effort of writing the guide and not a lack of compelling and developed settings. I also have at least one highly creative setting I want to nominate.

If anyone wants to add something, tell me. I haven't seen this anime for a long time, so I would appreciate any help.

Nominating:

World of Fantastic Children

Franchise: Fantastic Children
Magic/Technological Base: alternative world, science-fiction
Important Locations: Greecia
Important Groups: the Befort Children
Description: A group of strange children, the Befort Children, travel through time and space in order to find one girl.
What Makes The World-Building Great: Although there are some similarities to our own world, e.g. historic events, discoveries and people, it quickly becomes apparent that it is an alternative version of the earth in which truth and fiction is skilfully mixed and the technology is much more advanced, in spite of the action taking place in 2012. This, however, is coherently explained in the second half of the show.

I normally don't participate in these tournaments because I simply do not have the patience to generate the reams of text that seem to be de rigueur. Especially when it seems like I could wind up spending as much time arguing back and forth as I spent watching the anime in question in the first place. Laughing But this topic is one that intrigues me greatly, so I may have to emerge from my lair and give it a whirl.

Supporting:
Aqua, Aria franchise
Dustbin, Scrapped Princess
Humankind Empire Abh, Crest/Banner of the Stars
Japan 2030 (Ghost in the Shell: SAC)
New Yogo Empire
Setting of Tears to Tiara
World of Beast Player Erin
World of Slayers, Slayers franchise
World of Spice and Wolf, Spice and Wolf

There are some series that I have not seen mentioned that I believe ought to be included, but since I frankly suck at writing up these nomination entries I'm reluctant to do so if there isn't going to be any support. So, is there anyone willing to support these if I (or maybe - please ghod - someone else) nominate them?

Floating Cities, Daphne in the Brilliant Blue
Flonyard, Dog Days
