Something tells me it will be better because it's a tv drama (more time) and because the movie is so infamously bad I'm sure they'll take a hint.

However, I'm not getting my hopes up too high. Takahashi's work doesn't have the best history of translating from manga to live action. (In addition to the MI movie, there was also a horrendous InuYasha stage show a few years back where IY vaguely resembled David Bowie in The Labyrinth.)

Nonetheless, the actress who is playing Kyoko is quite good, so that's at least a solid start. I just hope I'll be able to find torrents for it since I doubt it will get licensed.

Oh and I also hope they don't update the drama so it isn't set in the eighties.

Why not? I'm not saying that everything should be updated, but I don't think it'll be a big deal to see a laptop in the show.

My question is, will it be following the manga or is it doing it's own stories?

I think a lot of the comedic miscommunications shown in the series would be hard to do if they had access to things such as cellphones. There was a discussion about this on another forum I'm at. I just feel that some of the simple charm of it would be lost if it was updated (if they kept the updates minimal, that would be okay though. I'm not going to be upset if someone randomly has a laptop or something.) Although really, it is a story that I think works well in any time period. It wouldn't be a huge deal. It's just a preference.

I imagine it will be following the manga. I hope they get someone good to play Yotsuya as well.

Masion Ikkoku is one of my faves. so I'm pretty excited. (plus the lady from densha!)

Misaki looks good enough for Kyoko. However, she played Natsumi in the AWFUL live-action You're Under Arrest, so I'm not holding my breath. Thus far, the few live-action adaptations I've seen from anime/manga have been pretty bad.

*LOL* Bravo! Lots of people get upset and fall in love, however it'll take a man of special talents to do Yotsuya.

Wow, I had completely forgotten about this. I figured the idea was scrapped or something, so this is great news for me.

And yes, the question of who plays Yotsuya is important. *points to avatar*

"Maison Ikkoku" is my favorite manga of all time so think this show has great potential. I really hope they don't screw it up by trying to modernize it.

And good call on Yotsuya.

Even if they try to modernize it, it's not like Godai would be able to afford any new technology anyway....

The setting, time wise, doesn't impact the story that much. Of course there are many ways to screw up this adaptation, but I don't think it taking place in the 80s or in present day is one of them. Is it really a big deal if Mitaka has a picture phone?

I think you're missing the point. To me "Maison Ikkoku" is a product of it's time. It's a snapshot of a time, place and lifestyles that may no longer exist anymore (at least no exactly the same way). So I think that if they start using different fashions and devices the show will loose much of the charm that made it so appealing to many of us in the first place.
