Even though I agree the ending is a little flat, I thought spoiler[the final moment --- Emilia returning the umbrella to Maou] --- was sweetly emblematic of the character interactions of the entire show. It was a cherry on top of the confection that left me delighted with the series as a whole.
Indeed, the last episode really felt like episode 13 of a 26-episode series. Viewers and the cast get to catch their breath as the characters deal with a small problem (another commentary on modern life) spoiler[Emilia comes to Maou's rescue using her talents as a call-center tech-support person], as we prepare for the second half of the show (like: who was the archer who has been shown in the OP, and appeared briefly in a montage in this episode --- is that Chiho, maybe, or a character from the novels who was never introduced in the show?). |

The great thing is, just saying that reminds me of the exact moment. I'm assuming it's when he challenges Sariel, proclaims it's for Chiho's sake and then clarifies that it's in his capacity as her manager? I forget what the subtitles say, but she gives a flat "desu yo ne..." Anyway, I loved Maou-sama, it had the simple strength of excellent writing. Apart from some very minor matters the review addresses, it was consistently good. I rank it as my number one anime of the season, just ahead of Aiura and then Gargantia. |

The anime ended the way it did because vol. 3 starts off a major plot point. They didn't want to start vol. 3 with just one episode left and not knowing if they'd get a second season. They had to add some filler to pad out the season (of which I only remember episodes 6 and 10).
As of now there are 8 volumes of the light novel and volume 9 will be released in August. |

One of my favorites from the Spring Season although I agree with the finale being a bit lackluster. Well if there's anything, I hope for a season 2 in the future. This series has humor and has the ability to make me laugh every Thursday. If there's going to be any new anime from the Summer lineup to air this Thursday, I hope it'll be just as humorous as this.

I didn't start watching this at the beginning of the spring season, but boy am I glad I went back to check it out. This has been such a feel-good show for me and I'm really sad that it's over.

I also agree that the last episode would always be disliked because it's the last. Seriously, this show needs a second season. |

I think "pointless last episode" has become an anime trope. I always assumed it's because each season is a section of manga and they are leaving it open to a sequel without actually setting up the next story points. But SOOO many shows actually set up a sequel and never deliver - Kemeko DX comes to mind. No idea if that is a creative or financial decision. You guys should do a Top 10 Teased Sequels list.

I can't quite call it the best show of the season, but Maou was definitely my surprise of the season in its capacity to be, as Carl said, fun. It's been a while since I've had the chance to enjoy such a tightly-produced slice-of-life show, and the review totally brought that home. Big props are definitely due to the animation team, who clearly spared no effort in evoking character expressiveness, and then were able to turn right around and tear up the screen with a number of punchy action sequences. Likewise, they were never let down by the equally-talented cast and writers. To me, the consistently excellent quality of the production felt very much like the work of the WHITE FOX that headed up Katanagatari.
My rationalization of this phenomenon is that there's something in the ether, so to speak, on Earth, that slowly drives the Ente Islans to madness with prolonged exposure; which, in this case, is characterized by the gradual succumbing of their heroic spirits to the everyday grind of "dog-eat-dog Earthling capitalism". I interpret it as another layer of social commentary. 
The only thing that I still have trouble reconciling with the overall behavioral shift is spoiler[Emi's ongoing acceptance of Maou in spite of him allegedly being responsible for her father's death.] Particularly since that one scene where she spills about it was portrayed so intensely. |

I laughed out loud so many times watching this series it ranks up there for me personally as one of the funniest, and sorry, but I thought the whole potty joke sequence over a few epiosodes with Ashiya was just plain brilliant, (just thinking about the numerous trips to the toilet makes me smile broadly). I too would love a second season.

Well done, Carl. I wasn't as disappointed in the final eppie as you were, but I think the review was pretty spot on. Very much hope for a second season (and more).

I wasn't expecting anything from this show, but it's been fantastic. It's so well executed on so many levels I honestly would nominate it for best show in Spring 13. There were other shows with a lot of promise but they all stumbled at some point while this one just kept getting better.
Man I hope there's a second season in the works. |

Though we'll only know after the first Blu-Ray's sales are out in a week or two, I'm pretty sure there will be a second season. There was a time when the first volume was only behind many Attack on Titan and Madoka and Evangelion movies in Amazon's ranking, and more importantly, the boost on LN sales was huge. Like, for weeks in Dengeki's ranking, all eight currently released volumes were in the top 10, only behind the newest SAO and Index. I loved this from the LNs, and went crazy when the anime was announced. Was not disappointed. WHITE FOX has all my respect now, and the cast was nothing short of superb. |
