If you can't wait, Australian distributor Hanabee released this back in March on DVD and Blu-ray.

I wouldn't be surprised that this will get a Hollywood remake. I wouldn't be surprised that would happen. This one has the feel of an old Roger Corman flick or those old sci-fi movies of the 1950's. I hope this one gets an English language dub. It looks like this one deserves it. I hope Aniplex USA does this. I've got a feeling this'll sell real well.

I'm sorry but that trailer lost me at the shark. All I could think was the Landshark going "CandyGram." I couldn't stop laughing after that and I'm pretty sure that wasn't the response I was suppose to be having to the trailer.

It's totally campy on purpose. The film has a gross out factor but is also absurdly ridiculous. So yes, to a degree, you're supposed to laugh.

I can now say I have seen where a series jumped the shark.

I'm curious as to how many people have read the manga. You're all internet afficianados, so surely you've seen GASHUNK before, and Junji Ito is pretty well know for his unique qualities as a mangaka as far as story construction and art. Like, he's basically the only true horror mangaka that can creep you out. The OVA just came off as more putrid than unsettling, which is what Ito's works tend to evoke.

The whales got sick of the Japanese eating them so they called their homies.

I'm kinda in the same boat (pun intended) here. First I thought I'd give it a go, but then there was the *sigh* tentacle scene (Really? How freakin' original!) and then the shark. I couldn't help picturing in my mind the writer trying to think up a new idea and then jumping up and exclaiming, "i know! What if 'Jaws' had... LEGS!!!" And for some reason, they went with it. *shrugs*

Does anyone know if the original manga was good? I have seen Junji Ito's Uzumaki, which lost the well executed creepy and thrilling quality that its first few chapters had after like 5 chapters, I am now wondering whether GYO has the same problem.

Say what you want, stupid or not, I know I'd be hauling ass like everyone else was
Im actually torn though, whether it looks like something worth watching or...
I mean, from what I do know about it, the main characters are switched compared to the manga among a few other changes... I wanna see it, but I just don't know...
I do know that I've been wanting to read the manga for awhile, but have heard that it's quite the freaky read. And I guess I'm too afraid to check it out .
Yes, afraid, as horror things are just not normally my cup o' tea~
I've seen and quite liked a few horror-type things... But I dunno...
I've always been under the impression that this was just especially creepy.

Same problem happens with GYO once you reach a certain point in the fish invasion, it just goes ridiculous. Ito's best works tend to be in his shorter collections, because they're short and just creepy enough without overstaying and deflating.

I read the manga last year and, hmm, I don't remember it having that much fanservice. I did quite enjoy it though. I remember finding myself just staring at the grotesque creatures in certain panels for minutes at a time. I had borrowed it from a friend and then went hunting to buy my own copies but alas, vol.1 is waaay out of print (though it can be yours for only $60 from the Amazon marketplace! -- yeah, it was good but not that good).
