Unsurprisingly it's NHK. I'm pretty sure they had the worlds first HD system and broadcasts.

It's also a lot easier to move more quickly in Japan with its shorter product life cycles and smaller area(only really a problem thanks to the FCC and equivalents).

Just when Blu Rays are becoming truly affordable. I mean, I'm looking on Deepdiscount and Ninja Scroll is $10, complete sets are less than $30.

1080p blu rays look gorgeous and now we have 4K coming out soon and in 7 years, 8K resolution. Who really needs 4000 and 8000 lines of resolution?

I know I'm a dying breed (late 20's anime fan, who buys all of his anime via physical media) but technology is just scary now.

Japan is always 20-40 years ahead in the future. Shocked

Well, I guess future anime will metaphorically shatter the screens. Cool

Except when they switched to digital broadcast only last year and still use flip phones. Smile

I don't see why not. After all, today you can buy a 70" 1080p set for less than I paid for my old behemoth 43", 480 resolution, almost state of the art, rear projection TV a little more than a decade ago.

The real question is how big of a screen will you need to really make all those extra lines of resolution noticeable to the human eye? For example, on almost any size screen most people can distinguish 720 from 480. But, on say, a 32" screen, I doubt a majority could differentiate 720 vs 1080. Now, I have no doubt that on a 70" screen 4k vs 1080 is going to be a world of difference, but I don't know if I would want such a monstrous set in my living room. Smile

Yeah, once you get above 60" the pixels just become monstrous and easy to notice, so 4k will definitely show its benefits on that size and up. However, my current cabinet doesn't even allow for that size of TV, so 1080p is fine enough now, we just need TV programs to have more bandwidth. I guess we'll have to see how things go in 7 years.
