i'm starting to notice more and more on a lot of music boards i visit that tons of people are really starting to get into Jrock. suddenly all the indie kids are listening to stuff like "Toe", and more people are starting promote bands like X Japan. on top of that, Dir En Grey is on the Korn tour, and Moi Dix Mois is also plotting a US tour.

do you think this is a good thing? or do you think it will backfire.

Unfortunately, it is already an "in" thing. More and more people start listening to JRock. It depend on the person if its bad or good. For me, it bad, as I am generally a £$%^ the system sort of person and I HATE to be in the "in" herd.

But thats just me. On the other hand, if more people start liking it, it will become more accessible Smile

I was at AX day before yesterday, and they had a panel on J-pop and J-rock. It looks like what's in is the VIsual-Kei rock bands. The girls were going crazy when they were showing pictures of Dir En Grey, Gackt, Malice Mizer, the works.

J-Music (J-pop, J-rock, J-reggae, J-rap, J-punk) stands for Japanese Music, just go to http://www.wikipedia.org and type in J-pop and you can learn quite a bit.

This could be interesting...., I mean, you can get deg shirts at Hot Topic now! If it does catch on, I hope it means success in the US for other Jpop/rock artists out there, not just the Visual-K stuff.

It's "in", sort of, but it will never become an "in" thing. Anime is also "in" right now, but make no mistake about it, it's still a niche market. It's actually not that big of deal, at least nowhere near as much as some fans like to pretend it is. While J-music has grown in popularity, the fact is that international music from most countries has seen equal or greater growth in the past 5 to 10 years and Japanese music is hardly alone in this regard.

It's a trend of availability, music is getting more international exposure which has brought more record companies to artists overseas willing to foot the bill to bring the music over. People have just become more open to more types due to greater exposure to it, not to mention the growth of the anime industry leads to a growth in interest in the music amongst its fans, they also go somewhat hand in hand. Music is music, whether done here or there, some people adopt a diverse non-nationalistic view towards music as an art form, others close themselves off to that diversity. Of course that goes both ways, while some will only listen to US artists, there are some amongst certain fandoms that only pay attention to music from one nationality.

I shop there sometimes, and I've yet to see one. What was it called? Was it in English or Japanese?

EDIT: I've seen a Dir en Grey band shirt at Hot Topic. I'd have bought it, but it had a picture of a hideous worm infected skull. Plus it was white, and I don't look good in white at all. Lyk, omigosh!

forgot the name but all the headlines on the cover were in Japanese. It was wrapped in plastic, a monthly magazine.

Im not really into Jrock, which is weird because I love American post-hardcore/screamo.

I prefer Jpop, especially ballad singers.
