When and how do anime volumes or box sets go down in price? Like what makes them go down? Because i've been waited a while for Samurai Chamloo and others to go down, but i don't know if it ever will. Thanks.

Trends I've noticed are popularity of a series, releases of other thinpaks/box sets, and how long ago it came out. Samurai Champloo is still a relatively new series that was very popular so I wouldn't expect the price to go down for another year or so. They may release a box set/thinpak which might be cheaper or drive the prices of the individual DVDs down, but that's just a random possibility. Your best bet is just check different retailers for the cheapest prices around and take advantage of any sales, because prices of anime don't change as drastically as say, video games or movies.

I would suggest that you try and pre-order box sets when you can. That way you can get a sale price and places like The Right Stuf run sales for specific companies for example : 30% off all ADV products. So not only would you get the sale price but an addition discount off of that as well.
Fui's right. Anime is like anything else...you gotta shop around. |

Well I highly doubt Samurai Champloo will go down in price any time soon, and all Pioneer/Geneon titles for that matter. Haibane Renmei, Ikki Tousen, Paranoia Agent, Gungrave, and by now Samurai Champloo, and Texhnolyze is just around the corner, should all have boxes with the individual releases out, but the price has not dropped one bit on the individual releases.
An interesting story which may be possible, is what happened to the Gungrave box set. Shortly after its release, a thinpack was released of the series. So RightStuf had/has the complete boxset on sale for $49.99, if you live in the US that includes free shipping. Will this happen with Samurai Champloo? No one knows as of yet. Am I a bastard for giving you hope? Maybe. As for just about all other companies that don´t include Geneon, the prices on individual releases seem to go down around the time thinpacks/complete sets are released. Take in mind that this isn´t always the case. I agree on shopping around. Specially websites since they seem to have the best deals. If you don´t mind used DVDs, you might want to check out your local GameStop or Suncoast, I remember you said there isn´t one near you though but hopefully there is a GameStop. Pawn (sp?) shops are also recommended by many. eBay... watch out for bootlegs. |

if there's a Best Buy in your area, try there. Best Buy has quite a good selection and reasonable prices.

Yeah, Best Buy is the best choice. I went to the mall to buy a anime dvd for 30 and then went to Best Buy right after and saw the same one for 20. You can imagine how I felt.

Yeah Best Buy has quite a good selection for anime. I got Cowboy Bebop the Movie there for $15, and its usually $23! I went to the Virgin Megastore the other day, and they had a "Super Yummy Animega Sale" (thats really what they called it) The GITS Movie was $30!! I found it on Amazon the next day for $14, new! Definately not a good "sale" going on there.

Yeah it sucks. I guess i'll have to wait a while for stuff to go down, it'll probably go down for sure if Adult Swim ever stops showing Samurai Champloo. |

Yeah, Geneon releases tend to stay expensive for a long time. Even at Best Buy, which tends to sell most anime for under MSRP, keeps Geneon anime at MSRP for awhile. For example, they have Kannazuki no Miko Vol 1 + box for MSRP at $40, even after it's been out for awhile, but ADV's This Ugly yet Beautiful World Vol 1 + box, just released this week, is selling for $31. I'd suggest using DVDpricesearch.com to check around, and wait for studio sales at places like rightstuf and deepdiscountDVD. DDD had a sale that allowed me to get 6 volumes of Ultra Maniac for $13.30 apiece a few weeks ago.
But it's true, age and low popularity really can drive prices down...I found Vol.1 + Box of Someday's Dreamers for $2.49 new on Amazon Marketplace, and the second and third volumes elsewhere for $8 and $12. I guess if you want to be in on the latest and greatest, you have to pay the "club" membership fees. |

Why are people still complaining about anime prices? I mean, you guys should be lucky to have your favorite anime title on DVD (with both languages and tons of extras) for under $20. Back when I started collecting anime, DVD wasn't invented yet, and fans paid as much as $40-60 for one subtitled OAV episode on VHS.

Well your on the interent so you can always try on there, cant remember any websites off the top of my head but ebay is one of course
If your looking for cheap anime fair enough but if you dont mind more quanity in your anime for the same kinda prices then you should check out fruits basket. Funi did a one off and made it so you now get 6 episodes in 1 disc and plently of exstras. That is if it is your kinda thing. hope this helps space |
