According to local media, the source of the controversy comes from a February 20 incident in Yekaterinburg in which a 15-year-old girl committed suicide by jumping out of the 13th story window of her home. Police found a note in the room she jumped from that read "I can't live anymore," along with four volumes of the Death Note manga. At the time, police investigated if there was any connection between the suicide and the manga.

And of course the first thought is 'Oh wow, a comic about death, this clearly must be the cause behind this tragedy'. *shakes head* Oi...

Confused in first place the main audience for that manga is teenagers, not children, in that case ban porn too, because even if children aren't the main audience, there is a posibility that they could look at it from some source : P

If we are going by the "its foreign and violent" they might as well laundry list MANY american media productions such as the Terminator series, the Dark Knight, and pretty much any Slasher series as they are "not russian and could lead to suicide".

More like some will be reluctant participators as the Russian mofia is reportedly the major child porn producers of the world. I doubt Putin cares anyway so no fear anything getting changed anytime soon there.

It ran in shounen jump, so yeah, it was for children.

Actually, Russia is attempting to ban porn and possession of most forms of it could land you in jail these days in many of it's provinces.

I'm sure the Russian Orthodox Church will weigh in on the matter and Putin will do whatever they want, since their government is now little more than a puppet of the church since they bought him the election.

Want to know why there should be a separation of church and state (besides extremist Islamic states)? Look no further than Russia these days.

Aye, this is gonna be hard to dispute against. Normally, I'd say how stupid this is and how stupid the parents are being, but I have NO idea what goes on in Russia.

Looks like I'll have to do some research first before saying anything on the matter.

How tragic having to hear about parents in Russia pushing for Death Note to be banned from the country when it's the responsibility of the readers to know what is not okay to imitate, and if little Russian kids are reading this series, their parents should have taken time to guide them on what's okay to re-enact or not in the real world instead of trying to kill the fun of the manga's Russian fans, including those over teenage age. Trying to take away people's rights to access a book is worst than the whole rediculous connection-between-video games-and-real-life-violence study thing going on in the U.S..

A, Death Note is on the older end of the Shonen spectrum, and B, the Shonen demographic is 10 and up.

There's a separate demographic under Shonen.

Anyways, is there even a single instance of suicide in Death Note that was not caused by the Death Note?
