Not sure why they felt the need to change the name of it.

My guess is that FUNi's going to be the one to license it. They did license the Resurrection movie last year, after all.

Ugh. I think they're overestimating the name recognition of that title over here. I'd imagine most people under 35 haven't heard of it.
Hopefully it's just the title and the ships' and characters' names aren't anglicized this time.

Great news. Never seen the original but I'm loving this one.
Let me guess one of the things they changed in the original US version was that the humans attacked first.

They gonna change the name of the ship and the crew as well? Sorry, but Sterb Lazors is as anachronistic as Robotech, and just as needed or wanted. Just call it Yamato, more anime fans will recognize it that way. I never grew up with Star Blazers, so I will never call the actual non-localized version by that name.

Whitewashing Yamato out of the title is only the first step, right???

Echoing the sentiments in this thread, I am all for bringing Yamato 2199 to R1. I dislike the name Star Blazers, but I can live with that as long as the story and characters are not rewritten, edited and Americanized.
On second thought, I am wondering if this name change is related to licensing issues. If so, this is depressing me. It is very likely that the names in Yamato 2199 will be changed too. The story might remain the same, but I would still hate other changes.

I think you mean "When or where".
Anyway hoping this means legal streams for this here are going to finally pop up. Been meaning to try this series for quite a while, and this would be the perfect way to do so.

I don't know what to think of this, really... especially since there's no information about it whatsoever. If it ends up with actual physical releases, I'd be perfectly happy to buy them so long at the japanese version is also on the discs, completely unedited and names intact. I'm not sure if the UK would even get a release though, since IIRC Star Blazers was never shown here.

And now we finally have the (expected) reason why they canned the official U.S. Star Blazers website.

That's what I thought when I read it. It's odd why they chose to name it that. I'd doubt anyone under 40 would know the name (or saw the show in its original run on TV). I suppose Voyager has to do something other than keep reissuing those box sets of Star Blazers and the Yamato movies.
I already picked up the first two volumes on BD really cheaply from Book Off when I was in Osaka last March, so I guess I'll just continue to keep buying Bandai Visual's release.

It was on the Beeb back in early '80s, cause it's what got me into anime in the first place.
I had to import the first "Iscandar" arc, but I couldn't get the second and third series as an import because of shipping blocks and OOP.
