My guess would be its for the blind people so they know when to cross the street.

I don't know if it's always the same song, but from watching the extras in The Animatrix, the melodies played are probably based on old Japanese folk songs.

Maybe its free music played during people wait at traffic lights,

so they wont become bored while waiting for the traffics lights

to change to cross the street? Laughing

It's definitely for those who are blind. One of the traffic lights where I live will do that, if you hold down the walk button for about ten seconds.

Why, it's just the Traffic Light Song.

It's a charming idea, and I'd like to see it used in the West, instead of the incessant and dull beeping noises our crossing signals make (at least, here in Denmark, they do). Of course, we'd need to use a culturally appropriate melody of our own. Smile

Mind you, if I lived next to a traffic crossing, I think it would drive me (even further) round the bend, having to listen to it all the time.

I`ve heard about three different varieties of the street crossing song, and yes they`re for blind people when they cross the street. They`re normally between 10 and 20 seconds long.

The funniest thing. 3 years back I stayed in a fairly urban part of Yokohama and have never heard this sound. So I was really confused when some people back home (anime fans) asked me about the "traffic light song" Razz

Yeah, we had a traffic lite song about 23 years ago. I can't drive 55. Laughing

Actually I was thinking it was like the notes to N-B-C. But boy was I off. Is this new, I never heard any traffic lights song, music nada, when I was in Yokusuka in 1986.

Say Abunai, I know it's the wrong country, but how about Peter and the Wolf music for traffic lights?
