Aww, I'm sad to hear this! He was one of those names I noticed in my Club 9 and What's Michael? translations, both of which were just so damn funny with excellent dialogue. I didn't know he had done so much more.

His name on a book was always a sure sign that I was in for a good read, the best read, both because of his translations and the quality of the source material he was bringing to us. |

That's quite sad to learn. His name wasn't much on our tongues anymore, but looking fondly on my pile of Masamune Shirow manga, I recognize that I owe him something considerable. And that's just the tangible piece. There's something remarkable about somebody who got into this so early in such a big way and was drawn into Gunbuster. It's like something from a lost time of myth and legend.

I actually have a few versions of Kamui I found at a thrift store. I also have read many of those titles from back in the day.

Wasn't even 53 years old. Surreal to think such an important figure in the manga industry in North America is gone. Not sure where we'd be without him.

Oh GOD! This is such shocking news. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and the anime community that will miss him dearly. His impact in manga is immeasurable,here in the US.

I never met the guy personally, but back in the dark ages when we were trading 6th generation VHS copies I knew he was a reliable guide to a quality manga experience. The only other thing I can compare it to is seeing Kanno listed as composer and knowing I HAD to have it.

Very sad news, indeed. His name was all over the place in the early-mid 90s. His translations were good, and the projects he worked on were often excellent, helping pave the way for the industry as we know it today. A shame he had to leave us so early.

No mistake, Smith was a giant in this industry before we could really even call it one. I'll be reading some Lone Wolf and Cub tonight in his memory.

Toren was always willing to give me advice about my writing or answer my questions. His gracious statement on the back of The Anime Companion made me feel I had made a contribution to anime fandom.
He was one of our pioneers who helped build anime and manga fandom in the English speaking world. He is missed by many. |
