This is why I loved Criminal Minds. FBI profilers know how serial killers, and mass murderer think, profilers knows entertainment like video games. violent movies do not create serial killers. The mind of killers and mass murderers are more complicated then what many people think. There are a lot of factors that can make a person into a killer like for example history of abuses in the family, mental illness like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, etc... I wish FBI profilers would go on TV more often to explain how serial killers mindset work, and help combat stereotype that violent video game made serial killers.
There's one problem with this article. You reported on this too late, CBS broadcast ths on Feb 24 and I know I remember seeing this on Kotaku last week. |

I'm glad we got a fbi profiler behind us. People are always going to kill people. It's sadly it's just in our nature. Some people just don't have the conscious to think it's wrong or don't care. What tv show did Jack The Ripper Watch? What game did Lizzy Borden play before hacking up her parents? Oh wait. Just there is always going to be these people going after popular things saying they cause things they don't. First it was comic books which the guy been proven have been lying about it in Seduction of innocent or whatever it was called. To music to just about anything.

You're correct on the book that blame comic book. As I said, the mind of a serial killers and mass murderers is more complicated then what people thought hence why we need criminal profilers, they know entertainment doesn't make killers. |

It's practically laughable that you need to have a doctorate to be a practicing/licensed psychologist |

Where's my bullsh!t button???
Let's see a former profiler, from her experience, which is not detailed, and even admits "it is one of the risk variables when we do a threat assessment for the risk to act out violently". And the psychologist conveniently weasels out with ""there seems to be something..." Yeah, we believe it A gory shoot-em up video game ALONE will not turn someone into a murderer, but add it to other environmental factors, and there's no wonder why some of the more recent events have transpired. |

The whole "video games/movies/music are evil and turning people into murderers" debate is nonsense anyway, because if it was directly linked to those things, there would be a lot more problems. I will never understand why there are people out there who insist on thinking otherwise.
Maybe one day they'll find out that Jack the Ripper started murdering women after listening to one of Beethoven's symphonies. |

I never said it was the sole factor. JTR was never identified, so no one will even know. Lizzie, well, again, as i stated earlier, environmental factors were obviously at work here. Further, that was one incident, directed at her parents, not one a month like we seem to be experiencing in this age. It wasn't Beethoven, it was Bach! |

This is nonsense, and not just from the gory shoot-em up video game side of the issue. Psychological problems aren't just related to environment, either. The very brain is a huge factor in this, because they're not the same. Hell, it's the very reason why men and women are different, let alone the separation within the sexes to which not all men or women are the same in their own gender. A person can have zero negative influences in their lives and still have destructive thoughts, and many studies on children have proven this repeatedly. It's very true the phrase "it's in our nature to destroy" is applicable here, because nature's rule "the strong shall survive" means there will always be one person who will want to destroy another. No society free of gory games, television/movies, songs, and books will change this. People have been killing people longer than established societies have existed. Hell, one freaking species made another extinct by this natural tendency, which now leaves us. Look how well we turned out. |

The above and $5 will get you an overpriced coffee at Starbuck's
Environment is a huge factor in how child turns out; it's the single biggest factor. Why don't you go study it. I mean really study it, not just spew out "studies have shown...". |

So five years of being alive can cause someone as young as that to have been diagnosed with something as complex as schizophrenia? I call bulls%#t. I agree with you on just about everything besides the nurture over nature. Last I knew though, nature won out actually, not that I really agree with that either. They're both equally arguable and still tied, in my frank opinion. |

Who said anything about 5 year olds? That said, 5 yr olds should not be playing death & destruction (or any) video games. I also never mentioned environment as being the sole factor in any of this, although untreated iron will definitely rust in a humid environment, but that's not what we're talking about. I never mentioned clinical diagnoses either. I have a very dim view of all that psychoanalytical BS. If there was ever a bullsh!t science it psychology. Other than the 5yr olds, I think we're mostly in agreement here, so let's hit the bullsh!t button together (we have one here, and i just hit it). |

Great news report. I love how Tim Winters at the VERY end of the video tries to pin the whole blame on the entertainment industry & FAILS miserably at it.

Anyone trying to pin the entire blame on one factor is just plain wrong. But it remains a factor no matter what anyone wants to argue. |
