Press Release (8-14-03) - Voltron: Defender of the Universe Toy License to Toynami
In the 2 1/2 years of the company's existence, Toynami has given us mostly crappy toys that are supposedly "collector's items." The biggest example is their supposed cream-of-the-crop, the Robotech Masterpiece Collection Veritech Fighters. During their initial press release, Toynami claimed that the $80 toys would have 30% diecast metal. Unfortunately, when the first MPC - Rick Hunter's VF-1J - came out, there was less than 5% diecast on it. The toy had major signs of paint overspray, fingerprints were all over the chrome parts, and the overall appearance was no better than a bootleg. The only good thing was its elaborately decorated box, which Toynami probably spent majority of the cost on. Aside from the poor quality control and broken promises, Toynami completely lacks originality. The Robotech lineup is their biggest example: MPC (scaled-up copy of Bandai's VF-1 High-Complete Model + some design techniques stolen from Yamato Toys' VF-1), Veritech Super-Poseables (copies of a non-poseable Battroid Valkyrie figure displayed at a Tokyo Wonderfest), SD Morphers (copy of Takatoku Toys' old Paro Mecha), and I-Men (poor attempt at jumping in the Kubrick bandwagon). And now that Toynami also has the license to make Speed Racer toys, don't be surprised if they use ReSaurus' old molds for their Mach 5. Now I fear for what's to come with the new Voltron toy line. Supposedly, Toynami will market the Lions as part of the Masterpiece Collection and charge $80 per Lion. |

Close. At SDCC they said there would be three boxes (Book style), sold together as a box set. If I remember right the boxes were Yellow/Green, Red/Blue, and Black. Don't remember the price, I seem to remember them saying $80, but I can't be sure. Can't really fault them on doing "Kubricks" of their own, just about every company out there has something. There's Mezco, Playmates, Toynami, Art Asylem, Mega Bloks, Smiti and many, many others. Can't say the same for thier take on the old Taka figures, though their bigger and not nearly as nice as the Paros. I surprised they didn't try doing fast packs too. Emerje |

That's just their I-Men line, the'll be doing a diecast transforming Masterpiece figure soon too. If it's anything like their Transforming Esca it'll be 3 years before we see the final product. Emerje |

Well, with the new series coming out next year and the comics going strong with another miniseries in December, and the GBA game coming out sometime in the future, hopefully they'll be a little quicker with the toy production than three years.
