I was watching the first disc of Please Teacher last night. Yeah I know I am going to hell for watching the show, but when I read the premise of the show on the netflix. Well I just said I got to see this. Actually not as bad as I thought it would be. In that its not utterly dirty.

Anyway at one point in the show. One character looks at a picture of a very young girl, and says "She's just jailbait". Well I laughed, and then I got to wondering is this actually a term used in japan? Now I have no clue how old the term is. I only heard it for the first time a few years ago, and have only heard someone use it a few times. So atleast where I live its not something you hear often, or maybe I do not know the right people.

So I am pondering was this actually what the character said, or was it just a clever dub. If it was something done by the dubbers well I will be honest it was spot on funny, and hilarious. Anyway I cannot speak japanese so if anyone does can you explain this to me.

Is this like a literal translation, or a similar to translation, or did the dubbers see a spot for a funnier line and go with it. Anyway thanks in advance if you know the answer to my question.

Just so there's no misunderstanding, this was said in the dub, correct?

Here's one for you then Opaquescum. Errol Flynn, famed Hollywood actor, used to park his car by Hollywood High, and watch the "San Quentin Quail" get out of class. If that don't say jailbait, what does?

Darn, I watched the sub and don't remember seeing what you are talking about. This is in the first disc yes?

I remember what opaquescum was talking about. It was the blond boy who was seen by Kei and his Mother-in-law coming out of the "hotel" with his girlfriend.

In the scene that he's referring to, they did a flashcard sort of thing with photos of women and he said what type they were. Can't remember if it was in the extras though.

I remember the "jailbait" comment. Although in Japan, "Jailbait" might be of a different age than Americans might use, since according to other threads on ANN, the age of consent is a bit lower there than here.

Honestly, I see no valid reason to ponder this. I think its just a clever use of words, but thats just me. Keep in mind some translations from Japanese to English might not go smoothly, so they throw in terms that help smooth out the rough edges of the translation. Its a clever use of words thats all.

Yes it might have been a word added to the script in the dub, but I feel that opaquescum is asking if this word is a direct translation. Do people in Japan actually use this term?

I kind of doubt it, but thats just my opinion since I don't have proof.

*gets out Please Teacher! Disc 1*
*scans through it at 8x~16x speed*

I'd like to help figure this out, but I couldn't find the scene you were talking about. Can you post the episode number and approximate time? I'm also thinking that it's something the dubbers put it; at the least, I'm not aware of any special Japanese slang term for a girl that age..

Eh, there are worse anime out there that qualify for "going to hell" status, especially since Please Teacher breaks away from the fanservice to tell a fairly serious story in episodes 10-12. I'd also suggest Please Twins!, although the "scandal" angle is a bit different in that one.

Sorry if I confused anyone. I will post the scene in spoiler so if someone has not seen the show they will not have it ruined for them since this scene is sort of at a crux of the dilema.

spoiler[The scene is in episode three right after the opening sequence, and the credits. Where kei, and the teacher are both in the principles office. He is telling them to keep it low key, and he understands their situation. Along the way he shows them a picture of his wife which he met as she was a student at the school. Kei looks at the picture, and says "She's just jailbait.]

Anyway it is in the dub.

OT. I am kind of torn by the series, because yeah I know it has a very dirty subtext.spoiler[ I am not sure which is worse the 10th grader shacking up with a teacher. Technicalities asside he is still really a 10th grader, or a 10th grader shacking up with an adult that is naive, and emotionally underdeveloped.]The worst part is I am actually enjoying the series. Maybe the two combined makes the series dirty acceptable. Since the characters seem on par. I suppose that makes jailbait an apt term to find in the series even if its just DUB. Oh well cannot wait to see the next few discs.

I'll leave out all the expletives I let fly while I tried to track down my copy of the DVD...

Nonetheless, the character in question is Kei and I caught his line as being "Hanzai da yo...". He doesn't actually finish his sentence. The translation I'd give that sentence fragment is "That's a crime...". More or less. Smile

Thankyou very much yaro. That helps alot. I guess this is an example of a very good DUB. Seeing as the direct translation is not half as good as the dub. I probabally would not have laughed at "That's a crime...". While I had a little chuckle over jailbait.

Well considering there is no age of consent law in Japan. And if you watch show like Great Teacher Onizuka the live action drama or Initial D you'll girls take part in what is known as compensated dating.

They go on a date with a rich older man he pays them money he has sex with them. So no Jailbait is not something in Japan because it does not exist. Note this is not a common practise in Japan its just something that happens sometimes. but that should answer your question.

What we've all been waiting for, and now it's finally here: Japanese Age of Consent and other related laws.

Ok so I was wrong about the age of consent but at 13 years old well Jailbait basically means someone that is in elementary school then. The way things work in Japan is screwed up. For example a friend of mine here's boyfriend is 26 she's 18 and they have been dating for 3 years so ya don't much understand it myself. Also how much underage sex occurs in hentai??? lets just leave it at that.

Well, it explains a lot of stuff for me now, cause I'd hear about high schoolers I knew having sex with people that were 18 or older. Heck, one of my classmates had sex with one of our former teachers when he was in high school.

A couple of girls I used to hit on in High School had older boyfriends, of course I didn't know when I would hit on them. The creepy thing was that we were 17 and their boyfriends were my friends older brothers who were 21+.... creepy. I hate older guys with girls my age (17 at the time) not only because I believe it's morally wrong, but because it was getting rid of the pretty girls my age. But when Prom time came around, their boyfriends couldn't go because they were over the age limit, 21 I believe Rolling Eyes.

The funny thing is that when me and my girlfriend began going out, she was a senior in High School and I had graduated a year ahead of her... kind of became what I hated, but then again she was 17 and I was 18 (I'm only 19 now).

One of my friends from High School, just recently got pregnant at 19, has been going out with her boyfriend since our senior year who she met at a club where he was celebrating his graduation from college Confused... I believe he's about 7 years older than her.

We call him the "Cradle Robber".

Oh and the thing about high schoolers having sex with their teachers, (insert corny over-used joke about "where were they when I was in school?" here) that's just wrong. Thank Jeebus that didn't happen at my school, well not that I knew of.
