Hey, great review.
Just one thing, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragons was released on the DS back a few years ago, so technically that was the last portable FE released in the US- not the GBA ones. Just that minor nitpick
Otherwise, I am so pumped for this game. It's sad that it got delayed at some stores.

You know, I checked and rechecked that. I'm not sure how I missed it. Thanks for calling it to my attention! I skipped the DS game completely, it seems.

Was just an update to the original fire emblem game. Can't wait to play this one, if only some stores would get it in stock.

There are stock shortages? You'd think Nintendo would ensure that there were enough copies of what is one of their flagship titles to go around. But you North American fans should count yourself fortunate. Us Europeans have been given an airy-fairy "April" date by Nintendo, while retailers have the game down as a late May/early June release. It's like the bad old days of waiting months and months for localisations, if we got anything at all. Yay for region locking.
Anyway, this is a great review that nails the reasons why Fire Emblem is so unique and so brilliant, and why it's my favourite tactical RPG franchise. I finished the first GBA game without losing anyone, somehow, but could never keep everyone alive during that final mission on the second game. I know this isn't necessarily the way the game should be played--you do, after all, have a large enough roster to be able to take some losses--but I just can never bear to lose characters.
This is one of the main reasons I bought a 3DS. It can't get here soon enough.

This review makes me even more excited for this game! I definitely need to go track down the combo pack with it, since I was waiting for this one to come out before getting a 3DS. Good thing my birthday is coming up and I'll have money!

Anyone who hasn't preordered the game, heads up. The price jumped to $56.70 on Amazon today, and it's practically unavailable anywhere else.
So, happy hunting.

Fantastic review!
Between Devil Survivor Overclocked, Pokemon X/Y, Rune Factory 4, and a Fire Emblem where I can turn off permadeath, I think it might finally be time for me to buy a 3DS.

Nintendo just can't stop dumbing down its greatest franchises to appeal to casuals.

I will never understand how giving people the option to do something somehow spoils it for you. Just don't turn it off.

I heard they released limited quantities on purpose to promote digital sales.

Funnily enough, I remember a comment elsewhere (not quite sure where) that said that Nintendo was insulting people who turn permadeath off by calling it "casual" mode. So I guess not only are they dumbing the game down for all the "hardcore" fans, they'll also mocking the other fans at the same time! Impressive.
I guess having 4 difficulties is also dumbing down the game. I mean, sure Awakening actually lets you play in Lunatic difficulty right away and is the first game to have a difficulty above that, something I'd guess hardcore fans would be happy about, but the mere existence of normal and hard mode is an insult. Let everyone be forced to play it on Lunatic+, that's clearly the better option.

I don't think there's any reasonable definition of the term "casual gamer" that also includes "willing to play Fire Emblem."
