Had the displeasure of seeing this series last year and definitely don't feel like revisiting it with how the Marias, Mafuyu and most female characters in the series are treated. Outside of the whole breast-sucking gimmick and various ecchi antics that are my main pet peeves with the show, the plot to the series feels like one you would see all too often from a shounen anime with evil organization wanting to rule the world, baddies being either grunts or thinking they are better than everyone else, male lead taking guise as a student to find whereabouts on said organization, male lead develops romantic interest in female lead as series presses on, etc...
I get that sex sells and I can enjoy fan service/ ecchi titles like the Gatari franchise and Ghastly Prince Enma Burning Up as long as they aren't in poor taste or cross into misogynist territory. But something like Qwaser of Stigmata is not for me.
EDIT: Went on Wikipedia and seen that the source material for this is a shounen manga. How the heck is something like this okay for Japanese youth in light of the Youth Ordinance Bill Japan passed?

Main problem I had with this show in comparison with the manga is that, while the whole boob sucking plot device can be argued as being a pretty cheap gimmick to provide erotic content, the manga version never relies on it so much to act as a crutch to suggest that it can't tell a story without it. There are many elements to the series that show, if this gimmick never existed at all, there is enough content to rely on to tell a pretty darn good story. The anime version however abuses it excessively to the point were it looks like there's a quota that needs to be met; sucking and squeezing at least twice an episode.

So, Theron, did you ever imagine yourself writing a sentence like that for a (theoretically) non-hentai title?

You sly dog.
Anyway, I shared Theron's surprise that this wonderfully sick puppy got licensed in NA. Thank God anime still pretty much flies under the Red State/Tea Party/Religious Nutbar radar because if they knew that material like this (i.e. a 13-year-old boy slurping on all manner of tittays; the aforementioned lezzie-loli munch-out) was legally available they would absolutely mess their britches.
I loved the show myself and look forward to owning this thoroughly depraved product.

Many risque titles turn out to be shounen, rather than seinen. But the ordinance deals with specific subject matters not fanservice in general. Dan Kanemistu suggests that the Tokyo Metro Gov knows it's very unpopular and so is not keen on exercising its power, though the threat has already made some publishers self-censor and cease printing of some titles

Makoto Uno's well known for his ultra voluptuous and hypersexualized character designs. And adding dicks to every single female. I wish him all the luck that he can make his futanari anime happen some day.

Also, 9 out of 24 episodes of Qwaser have some sort of MtF genderbending slant. *Almost* enough to put it on my purchase list.

The manga was more graphic and that got licensed much to my surprise. It's the kind of stuff that got Chris Handley in trouble. Tokyopop went under right as it came out though, so not enough time for a backlash I suppose.

you can still get the first two volumes legally off of amazon used or new under 20 dollars each but I won't argue more on the Handely case.
This anime it's self is unique in premises, shocking, very over the top which is why I liked it.

As though I needed more reasons to buy this thing.

This isn't the Koihime Musou OVA?

Qwaser is a good example of what happens when you take a show with a really cool premise and then drown it in boobs and lasciviousness.
I'm amazed that this actually aired on Japanese TV.

Can I say that it manages to do BOTH at the same time for me?

So why can Fumika be seen topless but not Ekaterina? I don't count that special episode or any of the dvd specials.

Huh. Honestly, I thought Seikon no Qwaser was just a borderline-pornographic titfest with some fighting thrown in for "flavor" (I use that word in a very loose sense here). But I never imagined it might actually have some depth to it. I might have to check it out now.

For a second I thought ANN was reviewing D.Gray-man.

To be fair... I still can't believe how good this show was. I mean, yeah, it was no masterpiece, but this IS a titty anime, yet it had good characterization, great fights, really good music.... what the hell happened? Sasha is one of the biggest bad-ass-mother-****** in all of anime.
[EDIT: Even when talking about this series, watch the language. - Key]
