Yeah, I feel bad about characters who have 4 positive votes still getting eliminated, even if it was only a few of them. Though, if it comes down to that I will actually vote against Ken from Digimon because his development ultimately makes him sort of boring and generic.
But I also think the smaller tournament is better too and to get up to 128 we would have to be including some of the weaker candidates who will just be eliminated in the first round anyway, most likely. So I am torn. Last edited by marie-antoinette on Mon Jan 07, 2013 10:35 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Every single Gundam Protagonist would easily fill up some slots. Well, some of them anyways. Definitely Amuro, Domon, and Heero.
I'll toss out a few more names... Train and Eve from Black Cat, Lal'C from Diebuster, Kouichi from Linebarrels of Iron, Kyon from Haruhi (the movie specifically), Keita from Kurokami, Rika from Higurashi, Kamui from X (tv series), Sakura from Card Captor Sakura. That's 12 more... |

Despite the fact that I am not his biggest fan, I could get behind Heero. And I actually considered Kamui though I don't know if I would vote for him because his character shift is a bit jarring.
Still, I don't really like the idea of coming up with candidates just because we have slots to fill :/ |

Actually, with Tris8's last two we're at 112 right now. (Technically we're at 113, but that includes a fourth entry from the same series.) Of those, 93 have scores of 2+, so we'd need to not only pick up 16 worthy nominees but also get 35 more a second vote. That's a pretty tall order at this point, especially since activity has been very low the past 24 hours.
Right now a cut at 64 would be somewhere in the 4s, and it isn't a clean one. If people think that would be dumping out too many (currently we'd be dumping 49, including the lowest one in the series with four) then we could consider doing something we've talked about before: a field of 96 instead, with the top 32 seeds automatically getting a bye into the second round. I'm heavily leaning this way right now, as the success rate for knocking out the top 8 in any 32-entry bracket was always very low anyway and it would give some entries that might otherwise get wiped out in the first round a chance to gain some traction against lesser foes. For us to go that route I will need two things to happen: 1) Three more 1s picking up one or more additional voter. (This could also include a new nominee who quickly gets follow-up votes.) 2) Some action on the 7s. (The Top 32 cut line is currently near the bottom of them. Those currently at 7 include Chi, Kimihiro, Masanosuke, Shoukei, Vegeta, Watashi (The Tatami Galaxy), and Yukari. I don't know enough of these characters to know which one least deserves to get a bye. |

Yeah, I was thinking about using byes... Though I honestly don't really know how tournament bracket math works
Can't do much for #2 but I can for #1. Voting for: Erio (Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl), Hibiki (Vandread). Most of the others at 1 vote are the ones I nominated =/ |

I'll do my bit to bring the count up.
Nominating another example of a villain redeemed by the good guys. Ayato Naoi, Angel Beats! Who the Character is: In the purgatorial world of Angel Beats! Naoi has concluded that the strong and ruthless can fashion their existence for their own benefit. He can be somebody, unlike in his former life where he was but a shadow of his illustrious twin brother. When Kanade is removed as student council president, he takes over the role, proclaims himself god, proceeds to viciously harass the other students and plans to eliminate his rivals - the SSS. How the Character improves: What lies behind Naoi's vicious behaviour are his feelings of lack of worth in his former life, where his father compelled him to take on the identity of his far more talented twin brother who died in an accident. With the help of Otonashi who acknowledges his individual worth, Naoi joins the SSS, becomes Otonashi's most loyal supporter, helps the latter come to terms with his own difficult past, and, in the process, changes from a thug to a comically likeable character. Picture From the 1970s: Tetsuro Hoshino, Galaxy Express 999 Who the Character is: Tetsuro is a street kid in a world where the rich can exchange their bodies with superior mechanical replacements. His one dream is to go to Andromeda to obtain such a body so he can take revenge upon Count Mecha who killed his mother for sport. How the Character improves: Tetsuro meets the mysterious Maetel who invites him to accompany her to Andromeda on the Galaxy Express 999. On their journey he meets several legendary characters, learning from them valuable life lessons about desire, loss and generosity. Although he defeats Count Mecha he must face an even greater trial with Maetel and matures into a young man with a firm grasp on what is truly important for a life in the sea of stars. Picture: Maetel & Tetsuro From the 1990s: Porco Rosso, Porco Rosso Who the Character is: Porco is an embittered middle-aged pig. He may be the number one flying boat bounty hunter in the Mediterranean, but he has never forgiven himself for letting down his comrades in a dog fight in World War I. His self-loathing prevents him from leading a normal life and keeps him apart from Gina, the woman who loves him, and whom he probably loves in return. How the Character improves: When the flying pirates of the Mediterranean hire an American ace, Donald Curtiss, to shoot Porco out of the skies Porco finds his life turned upside down by Fio, a gifted young female engineer he hires to upgrade his aeroplane. He re-appraises his life and sets out to prove his mettle to Curtiss, to Gina, to Fio, but, most of all, to himself. After a terrific battle with Curtiss he succeeds on all counts and, in the final images, we see that he has finally fulfilled Gina's most ardent wish. Picture From the 2010s: Momo, A Letter to Momo Who the Character is: Momo is a young girl whose father has recently drowned in a boating accident. The last time they spoke prior to the accident they had had a blazing row. After the accident Momo discovered a letter from her father that only got as far as a greeting, leaving her wondering what her father had wanted to say to her. Wracked with grief and guilt Momo has retreated into a sullen shell. She has become estranged from her mother, who is also struggling to cope, at a time when the two need each other more than ever. Momo's mother decides they need a fresh new start so they move to a remote village on the coast of the Japanese Inland Sea. Momo resists taking the plunge into her new life. How the Character improves: In the village Momo meets and befriends three supernatural (and rather gross) goblins who cannot return to heaven without completing some unspecified task. They decide to help Momo find out what her father might have intended to write in the letter. Life in the village presents numerous challenges to Momo and, as she faces them and gets assistance from the goblins and other local characters, she begins to recover from her grief. By the end of the movie, Momo is ready to take the metaphorical plunge with her new friends from the local pier into the ocean. I like the idea of a field of 96, but we're pretty close to getting 128 so I think it's doable. VOTING FOR: Ayato Naoi, Angel Beats! Porco Rosso, Porco Rosso NOMINATING: Miyori, Miyori no Mori Who She Is: Miyori is an 11-year-old girl who has been abandoned by her parents and sent to live with her grandmother. Miyori wants nothing to do with people as she views them as untrustworthy, and walks in the forest near her grandmother's house. There she discovers that the forest is full of all kinds of spirits. They tell her that she has power and want her to be the next human guardian of the forest, but Miyori has sealed her heart to all people, spirit and human alike. How She Improves: Miyori hates everything about her situation. She is bitter and lonely but refuses the company of anyone and hates their sympathy. The spirits scare and confuse her, and at first she is suspicious of their intentions. But their genuine affection for her, attention and need for her help begin to open her up. When the forest is threatened, she is able to overcome her fears and insecurities to save the forest and her new friends. She is transformed from a bitter shadow to someone who works for the good of the spirits. Picture |

Sorry I haven't been here lately. Was having some trouble figuring out more entrants for the tourney and got busy with some other stuff in real life. But I think I have a good candidate:
Nominating: Shuji, Saikano Who He Is: Shuji is an aloof 17-year old high school student who starts up an awkward relationship with his shy and clumsy classmate, Chise. To his shock though, Shuji comes to discover that his girlfriend is a cyborg created as a weapon of war by the Japanese military to fight on their behalf in an ongoing war. How He Improves: Shuji starts off as a seemingly cold and distant character who is unsure of his feelings for Chise and how to handle the revelation that his girlfriend is a weapon of war. While he tries to behave normally around her when she is not on missions at first, Shuji sees himself being helpless to support Chise in any way as he comes to see how increasingly dependant the military is on her help and being fearful of her upon seeing that she is losing more of her humanity to her machine half. This helplessness leads Shuji to reunite with an upperclassman and former lover named Fuyumi, leading to a rift in his relationship with Chise and becoming increasingly distant with his classmates. While apart from Chise, Shuji learns to appreciate the bonds he has with his classmates and family, as well as discover that his feelings for Chise are genuine. With his newfound appreciation in caring for others, Shuji rekindles his relationship with Chise as their love deepens and they stay together through a cataclysmic event in Saikano’s finale. Haha, I don't know if Ayato has what it takes to win the tourney, but since I'd debated about nominating him, I might as well support him.

Ggultra24, you've already previously voted for Shinichi. (This isn't the first time that someone's done this for this nomination phase, either.)
And concerning Shuji, some of your details are wrong (his previous lover was the adult woman who was the soldier's wife, not Akemi) and I question how much he actually improved. I won't vote against him, but I think he's borderline. Concerning Momo, I was not even aware this movie existed, but it sounds interesting. I will have to hunt it down once this month is over. I will also Vote For on Tsukasa from .hack//SIGN. She's not the greatest example of improvement, but she does improve some. (I almost think a better case might be argued for Subaru, though.) Also, I am giving 24 hours notice about wrapping up the nominations process, so consider carefully before nominating anyone new. Since no one has expressed objections so far, we will angle for a 96 participant field. Please do give characters at a score of 1, 2, or 7 a second look, as 2 and 7 are the current break points. |

Oops. Been too busy lately to try going through my earlier nominations.
Here's a question: how do you find both Shuji and my earlier nomination of Koshiro borderline? Both have flawed personalities and unique situations they find themselves having to deal with throughout both their titles which they improve on throughout the run of their titles and come to terms with. Their circumstances aren't exactly ones you can conveniently overcome, especially in the case of Koi Kaze. |
