Another episode that contains a single scene so memorably drawn out, once again fans are divided as to whether it's brilliantly poetic or insanely maddening.

It had me going all "lol Space Ghost"

Also, I'd like to make a statement for whoever runs the column. The reason there's no episode guides for Sonic X Episode 53+ is probably because of the lack of a Japanese airing of this series. While we have access to japanese audio, there has been no airing of such a sort in Japan. The audio we can confirm was done back in 2004.

The only guides I've seen have been in french. (Sonic Planete being one source) Then again, many fans have watched the french airing of this.

Though, No Sonic X this week, regardless, I just thought I mention this.

"I'm going to follow this ant home. Kill his whole family." *cut to 10-12 minute scene of Space Ghost following ant home, slowly*

Anyway, thanks ChibiGoku! Perchance do you have a link to this French website that I may peruse? I was totally unaware that these episodes had yet to air in Japan. And I can read French, just not speak or respond to it. That's what 12 credits worth of university-level foreign language education will get you.

While it only goes up to episode 74, I can give an overview of episode 75+ for it, if you wish for me to send you the information via PM.

And 4 years of French class at a public high school... who said "Poblyk Skoullls" don't teach us anything...

This really sucks. there is nothing to look forward to. I might watch Naruto, I have to check my guide, in 8 hours even though I know it's a crappy re-run, but WTF. I also don't like the fact that I know this will be the situation for days, weeks, and maybe months to come. Atleast Trigun will be past the half way mark. I really didn't like the series until the Purple assassin appeared, followed by the Gun-Ho Guns. I like more serious anime. Atleast Escaflowne Collection will be available early April, hopefully I can survive April with just that.

Okay, so Princess Mononoke is airing completely unedited, with all the blood, violence, and language in tact, but Toonami can't air Naruto the same? I just don't understand this...

Just peeked a few seconds at Toonami.

Yup... Mononoke completely uncut, it seems.

While purists are definitely happy (and I feel relieved... a little), I don't... think this is good. I mean, CERTAIN snippets (i.e. heads and arms coming off) during primetime television? Parents are going to have a field day, and then the whole OMGCARTOONSAREALLFOR KIDSBUTALLANIME=VIOLENCE=DEATHOFALLYOUTHWEMUSTKILLIT is going to come up again... (And maybe even Miyazaki = corrupter of youth, that'll be fun.)

Yeah. Mixed feelings.

Well, CN probably isn't allowed to edit Mononoke. Miyazaki doesn't let anyone edit his anime since the Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind/Warriors of the Wind incident.
Quote:
A heavily edited and English-dubbed version of the film was distributed and shown on HBO and released on video in the 1980s as Warriors of the Wind. According to Nausicaa.net, the voice actors and actresses were not even informed of the film's plotline, and the film itself was so severely edited it ran 84 minutes (meaning 23 minutes was cut), with much of the storyline lost - especially the parts where Nausicaä works for a peaceful way of combating the toxic corruption of the world. Most of the characters were renamed (Nausicaä became "Princess Zandra"), and the story was rewritten somewhat.

Most fans of Nausicaä, along with Miyazaki himself, dislike that version (Miyazaki said people should put the version "out of their minds");[citation needed] Studio Ghibli has asked fans to forget its existence, and has subsequently adopted a strict "no-edits" clause for future foreign releases of its films. A common rumour tells of Miyazaki posting Harvey Weinstein, the man in charge of handling the Disney release, an authentic katana with a simple message: "No cuts."[2] A re-dubbed uncut version from Disney was released on DVD on February 22, 2005 for Region 1. (This DVD also includes the Japanese audio track with subtitles.) Optimum Home Entertainment released the film in Region 2, and Region 4 distribution is handled by Madman Entertainmnent.

Viz, the company with the Naruto license, are allowed to edit Naruto.

Miyazaki = corruptor of youth? What's next, George Lucas, teaching our children witchcraft? Anime hyper

Hopefully, the movie won't have that reaction, although I can understand why it WOULD get that reaction. I can't say it's totally uncalled for, either, even though I'm a HUGE fan of both the movie and Miyazaki. I'm not sure if Princess Mononoke was the best fit for that time block, perhaps Kiki's Delivery Service would've been better (although it would've been the odd-man-out because of it's lack of action).

...'Course, even Kiki's Delivery Service has enough of a 'child corrupting' element that SOMEONE would be bound to complain, but there's nothing in it that the normal stuff that shows on that hour don't have.

However, I certainly can't blame Miyazaki's feelings towards edits at all. What was done to Nausicaa was horrible, a prime example of how important a good localization can be. (And how fortunate we are that so many of the localization companies today are so concisious about their releases! I mean, the only popular company I can think of that DOESN'T do quality dubs is 4Kids)
