What series to you has really stood out as far as having gay or transexual characters? For example, Sailor Moon spoiler[had Michiru Kaioh (Sailor Neptune) and Haruka Tenoh (Sailor Uranus-HAHAHA ) as a couple, and the Sailor Starlights were guys that changed into women when becoming Sailor senshi. Course it also had a lot of naked women in it.]
To me it's not a big deal, because these characters' nature is not a main factor of the storyline, but a side detail. It's also interesting in the fact that gayness is not a big deal in Japan, but over here we'll get into riots or go to court or do protests. |

I haven't really seen much anime with homosexuality references, I'm not a big fan of love stories and I believe homosexuality is a bit difficult to find in serious/action anime. Of course, once in a while there are references to homosexuality....
Samurai Champloo is the only anime I own that was homosexual references. In one of the episodes, episode 2 I believe, Jin is in a hot-spring when another man enters. He, the man, begins talking about [lightningbugs?], luciernagas in spanish, and how males light up to attract females, and then he said that once in a while it attracts other males... Jin said something like "I'm outta here" and walked away. There are also many other references to homosexuality in this anime, but I don't believe they show men kissing... or anything else for that matter. Saiyuki doesn't show homosexuality, but they are always saying words like "fag" and "gay" to insult each other. The Water Sprite also constantly says phrases with double meanings, and always tells the guys not to take it that way. The only time I've been exposed to homosexuality was when watching the Newtype Magazine DVD that contained Gravitation. I was not expecting guys to make out and come out to each other so I was really surprised. Once again this was not an action series and I hate anime "musicals", so I stayed away. I don't have a problem with homosexuality. I had several gay and lesbians friends in school and they had no problem making out infront of us at school, not that we asked them to. Living near San Francisco, you kind of see it alot. |

Homosexuality, especially lesbianism, is relatively common in anime. I would give some links to sites specifically about the topic, but they contain fansub listings so maybe that would be against the rules. Still, I guess they have Google where you come from...

I see homosexuality in anime all the time. I'd say at least half of the animes I watch have at least one gay reference.
Most recently though I've been watching Kashimashi - Girl Meets Girl which revolves around lesbians. Kind of. The main character was originally male but due to some alien ship crashing into him he turns into a girl. A lesbian love triangle occurs. I find homosexuality with males to be extremely funny in anime though.
After the man says that he gives a creepy smile. Jin's exact lines in the dub after that are "Time to go". I couldn't stop laughing after that scene. I thought the spoiler[gay European from the eating contest (forgot which episode)] was funnier though. |

There was quite a bit of gayness in Cardcaptor Sakura and also in Fruits Basket. Then again, there's a lot of homosexualality references in a lot of anime series. However, these never really seem to be completely serious, for it's more of loving the person for their personality than their sexuality. Of course, that girl in Bleach is completely different storry. Unlike most of the anime series homosexuals, she was actually a lesbian, and were insterested in the sexual pleasure rather than the person.

Would Lucy/Nyu's groping of (name)'s breasts count? And what about the ghost girl in Maburaho's fetish for breasts?
If I remember right, in Samurai Champloo, it was explained that male homosexuality was strived for in the Tokugawa period of Japan. Women were just not good enough, appearently. So I would assume that if there are going to be more historical animes, that male homosexuality would be more common to see. Now are you talking Hentai, Echhi, or what? |

Almost every anime/manga I watch these days has at least SOME refrence to homosexuality in it. I think the one that "stands out" for me the most would be Gravitation, just because it was the first anime I ever saw that was so blatant about it.
