Even though I only heard of his works recently, its always sad to hear someone that had a lot of influence pass away like that.

Sad to hear of his passing. I watched Barefoot Gen for the first time a couple years ago and it was one of the strongest movies emotionally that I've ever watched. He definitely left his mark in the world of manga.

Wow, this is quite sad to hear. I've only read the first two vols of Barefoot Gen, they're incredibly depressing but damn powerful stuff, might have to work on getting the rest now.

So it goes.
Few comics have "moved" me on the level that his did, largely because it was based on a true historical story. I'm young enough that it wasn't one of the first manga titles I was exposed to, but my library had a copy. The scene that got me was when the starving kids decide they need to trap, kill, and eat a dog, otherwise they'll die of malnutrition from lack of protein. They've seen others succumb to malnutrition this way. They trap a dog but its happy to see them because it's been alone after the bombing. After a few tense moments the dog escapes, and they're happy they didn't kill it, but now they're facing starvation again. |

May he rest in peace. The historical importance of the terrible events told in Barefoot Gen cannot be underestimated and Nakazawa certainly did his part to keep the memories alive, transcending the borders of his nation. Just as well, all the other tragedies resulting from the Second World War must also be remembered in order to prevent such horrors from happening again.
