Viz uses Bleach to clean up in teen market
Japanese animé and manga licensor Viz Media has acquired its first title aimed at the older teen and young adult demo.
Bleach comes from the same family of manga as Viz Media properties Shonen Jump, Dragonball Z and Naruto, but instead targets an older age group than the company's usual core demo of seven- to 12-year-olds.
"Bleach is one of the big heavy hitters coming out of Japan, for which we have pretty big expectations. It is a very highly rated show on TV Tokyo at the moment," said John Easum, executive VP of Viz Media.
The property is already a very strong manga publishing title in the US, and Easum feels this is a "strong indication of how it will perform as a series."
According to Daniel Marks, MD at Viz Media BV, the Amsterdam-based company Viz launched in October with licensing outfit Copyright Promotions Licensing Group, teens will find it easy to identify with Bleach's characters.
"They are hip, trendy and fashionable," said Marks. "It sort of fuses a cool Samurai-esque feel with a retro style – all in present-day pop culture Japan that we think will resonate really well with the teen demo."
Bleach follows 15-year-old high school student Ichigo Kurosaki, who is able to see and fight the undead after an encounter with a 'soul reaper.' With his newfound powers, Kurosaki and his crew take on a brand new vocation: ghost-busting.

*Maybe* for the European market ONLY. Until and unless we hear anything from Viz themselves, there is no indication at all that they have the rights to distribute Bleach in North America.

Thank you Starks. we're aware of this one, but we're waiting to verify it with Viz in the morning. Like Cornered Angel states, we can't be certain it applie to the North American market.

I think it might be fake, because first of all, the Bleach manga is published by Viz on their Shonen Jump line (as opposed to their Shonen Jump Advanced line, which believe it or not, also includes manga originally intended for the7-12 year old market such as Hunter X Hunter and Eyeshield 21). Second, the text makes it sound like a "seinen" anime ("older teen to young adult demo"). Bleach IS shonen, meaning it DOES target the same demo as "Dragonball Z", and Naruto, which again is for 7-12 year olds. Also:

Shonen Jump is that very "family" of manga you mention; it's not a separate property. Dragon Ball/Z and Naruto are from the Shonen Jump family of manga and so is Bleach, and therefore has the same target audience as the other two. Remember, Japan does things differently than we do.
The point is, you are suggesting that Viz plans to promote the Bleach anime (assuming they actually have it) as an adult series. Well I've got news for you, Bleach is not an adult series, and with the exception of Inu Yasha, I have never known them to "take the easy way out" as it were.
Either way, like Tempest said, I would rather hear it from Viz themselves before we jump to conclusions.

Oh, I have no suspision that it is fake. C21 is a very reliable and trustworthy news outlet.
I just suspect that it only applies to Europe. C21 is not focussed on the North American market.

Why would it be Europe only? An anime this popluar, if indeed is liscenced, I don't think would be limited to just Europe. It just doesn't make sense thet it wouldn't hit America first.

Money. Competition. Money... North American distributors would love to get their hands on this series. It's surprising that they already haven't, so that leaves some fierce wheeling and dealing going on behind the scenes prolonging the license purchase.
Heck, maybe the license-holder wanna be's don't have a solid marketing plan for Bleach (i.e. the debate about what audience it targets) and don't want to shell out that much money until they do; the frenzied snapping up of any and all anime titles has already caused them problems they are now trying to learn from. Maybe this long delay IS part of a marketing plan. It's working awfully well for whomever winds up with the license: the more people watch the fansubs, the more word spreads about the series and the more anticipated Bleach becomes.

Considering how big the fanbase is, probably rivaling that of Naruto, I can't see why they would'nt bring the show to North America.
They even had fansubs showing in the theaters at the last Otakon.

Seinen titles are generally targeted at adults 20+, not teens. The demographic for Shounen Jump in Japan is usually cited as being 10-20.

You are making two mistakes here. First of all is comparing the Japanese age groups and the US age groups. The two should be equivalent, but due to how backwards the US, they are not.
The second is assuming that everything that falls under a certain banner (Shonen Jump, Shojo Beat (Ribon), Shonen Sunday, etc) is all targeted at the same age group. This is not always true as there are things in SJ that are targeted toward the younger group of readers and things targeted toward the older group. Bleach is one of those that is more toward the older group. There are also frequently things in many of these magazines in Japan that really are targeting people who arent in the magazines demographic as well. (Though, this is rarer with SJ).

You need to correct the initial statement on the front page.
The first person quoted in the article is- The VP of Viz Media US, John Easum
You only state that it quotes- Mr. Marks
Mr. Easum is the only one in the article that takes about the anime. While, Mr. Marks makes marketing statements.
Another huge error on your part is that you do not even quote the title of the article correctly: Japanese animé and manga licensor Viz Media has acquired its first title aimed at the older teen and young adult demo.
I think it does say Viz Media NOT Viz Media BV
