Use The Pirate Anime FAQ site to help you avoid purchasing bootleg soundtracks.

Easiest way is to look for either the SonMay or the EverAnime logo.

Another way that isn't listed is to check the listing number at a place like:

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/

For those who can read Japanese (http://www.neowing.co.jp/)

For instance, the listing number for .hack//SIGN OST 1 is VICL-60905.

As much as I love CD Japan, they don't have every CD in their database...

I never implied they did; it was simply an example. I actually use at least 7 different web pages to find out about legitimate listing numbers for CDs from Japan. The other resources I use are various stores in the LA area and a Japanese Newtype (the ads always have listing numbers).

Also, if you look on CD Japan or other import sites, you'll notice that there are a couple of major companies that have predictable letterings. For example, VICL means that it is an audio CD from Victor.

You have to be careful on the .hack soundtrack, though, because the limited edition releases in the US from Bandai don't have the same number. But odds are you are not going to see the used CD's for sale anywhere yet.

I anitcipated this response due to the new presence of such things, but I didn't address it because I figured if you can buy it in the US at a "normal retail" store, then it's most likely not a bootleg. Besides, there are several resources (like ANN and AoD) that can tell you if certain titles have soundtracks licensed for release in the US.

A nice lil' database is coming soon. In the meantime, just ask! ^_^

cookie said that [EDIT - Bootleg shop -C] is a bootleg store. I was wondering how all these places manage to do all this stuff illegally? And how do you tell if they are bootleg or not? *not very experienced with this stuff* *faints* Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop

You'd be rather shocked/disgusted to discover just how many sites sell bootlegs. Aside from reading the Pirate Anime FAQ, the easiest way to assure you don't end up with one is to buy from one of these 100%-bootleg-free retailers:

Anime Nation
CD Japan
Planet Anime
Animaxis

You forgot Robert's Anime Corner Store but bootlegs are a big problem. The bootleggers are getting better at what they are doing and in some cases is hard to tell the difference between the orginal item and the bootleg. An example of this that I saw just the other day is the FFVII soundtrack (2 CD's) that was being sold for 35$ (Normal retail for the import is 55$+) and the bootleg was indistinguisable from the orginal except for the small print on the back which had a known bootlegger for as the company instead of the orginal lable (JMS I think is the orginal label)

Easy. If it's under 20 dollars and it isn't domestic, then it's a pirate.

Japanese CDs are usually around 3000 yen a pop... and most places upcharge on that to make some profit on them.

A hint: almost all the CDs on eBay are pirates.

Just a note - you can get some CD's from Japan for under 20$, however they tend to only be CD singles.

Another famous (or infamous) bootlegger is SM -- their logo is usually on the back side of the case, near the bottom, as well as the spine card of the cd. They seem to be extremely proud of their jobs, though they do a good job at it, all the way down to the manual...*sigh*
