If GKids could only get Poppy Hill a "consolation prize" Annie nomination for writing and not a nomination for the big Animated Feature award, I'd say the chances of Poppy Hill getting a nomination for the Best Animated Feature Oscar is minimal. I'm guessing if anything foreign (well, more "foreign" than Aardman) gets nominated for the Animated Feature Oscar this year, it'll be The Rabbi's Cat, which I didn't remember being on the shortlist so I checked and, yep, it's there.

There's a lot more foriegn films than Poppy in the race for one of the 5 Best Animated picture slots. Pirates! Band of Misfits is a British production, and then there's The Painting, and Zarafa, both from France. I think Arjun (India) is also in the running, but I am really doubtful that one will make it.
Next year is looking to have just as many animated movies as this year. Letter to Momo is already getting animation critic buzz, but there is going to be serious competition next year from just about every major Western studio, and a couple indie European ones. Epic, Frozen, Croods, Monster's University, Despicable Me 2, Turbo, Justin and the Knights of Valour, Dorothy of Oz, Ernest & Celest and those are just a couple my animation friends have been throwing at me. But on Rabbi's Cat, I think it might get a nomination next year. Not sure of it's release date yet, but it might miss the nomination cut off date for a theater run. The only two that I've seen I feel deserve the Oscar this year are Brave or ParaNorman. ParaNorman is probably not going to win out of those two. |

The Rabbi's Cat is on the shortlist for the Oscar and GKids is playing it in AMC Puente Hills 20 in Rowland Heights (Los Angeles County) this week specifically to be eligible for the Oscar. It wouldn't be eligible for 2013 as it was a 2011 film in France and the Academy only gives a one calendar year grace period for an animated film to play in Los Angeles County.
Of course, GKids is doing the same for Poppy Hill, but the Annie nomination tea leaves seem to favor The Rabbi's Cat getting an Oscar nod. |

Good luck Poppy Hill, on the possible Oscar Nomination and at the Annies. Wreck it Ralph's a pretty awesome movie but I bet this one's going to be better. Can't wait to see it in theatres (even if I do have to drive 45 minutes to get there.)
