Didn't Saikou (from Bakuman) end up in the hospital due to overworking? I'm surprised that Oda can keep up with his workload.
One thing is for sure and that is Oda won't live a long life if he keeps this up. I like One Piece but I don't care if he takes a 2 year break if its good for his body.

For sure? You'll find plenty of old people who smoked and drank their entire lives. Sleep matters, but not as much as when you're young.
The man seems to work like a clock. If I had 10% of his discipline my whole lifestyle would be in ruins.

This is why Tite Kubo doesn't draw backgrounds.

The amount of devotion the guy has to his job is incredible...inspiring even...why If I ever realize my dream of being a cartoonist, I'll always think of Oda's devotion...
To remind me I need to watch my health.

This can't be healthy. Oda is almost a fictional character. Kenshin Himura only needed an hour per day to sleep.

This cant be healthy, but Oda is one of those people that sincerely loves what he does, and almost surely he does not think of its as work per se.
So I wonder what is healthier, a person that works on something they dont like and see as hassle, or something they do for mere money, escalate the social ladder, etc, or someone that really love what they do with their heart? I can bet Oda falls in this that last segment. Not forgetting as someone pointed out he is YOUNG!
However I agree than adding and extra 2 hours can be good. Yet I have no doubt Oda loves his manga so much that I can picture he cannot help it but take care of every single aspect, not feeling good to leave it to his assistants at all.
Love and dedication is the difference, that shows, between people like Oda and Tite Kubo or Yoshihiro Togashi.
I can surely see him not been able to let his devoted fans hanging for months, while he takes it easy and have fun, or dont giving a crap about backgrounds or white space. No, not Oda.

Yes, if you want to picture him, refer to Niizuma's Bakuman.

if one piece is as popular as the polls say, he should be able to tell them to do it whatever way he wants... shonen jump is now biweekly!

Regardless of any opinions of One Piece, that is remarkably incredible that Oda has that much devotion to this job and is able to keep the quality with only three hours of sleep.
After reading Bakuman and for fun researching what a manga artist entails, it's not at all an easy job in the least. This is one of these jobs that not only requires patience, but resolve and devotion to work as well.
That little amount of sleep can't be healthy, but considering he is still young, I can only hope that no immediate issues arise.

It's not uncommon for any comic book artist, Japanese or not, to work these kinds of hours. Speaking from an artist standpoint, we do it because we have a passion for it. I know alot of artists who only sleep 3 hours. It can be unhealthy, sure. But sometimes when you do what you love, you can't wait to wake up the next day.
