hello, i just joined recently, in the hopes to find alot more out about anime. I was recently introduced to it by a close friend, through the series Elfen Lied. Needless to say, for those who have watched it, it's really a moving and amazing tale. great art too. anyway, im hoping some of you here who know alot can introduce me to some new stuff...
so far i've seen.... Elfen Lied (finished) Chrono Crusade (watching, on ep. 10) Hellsing (also on ep. 10) AIR TV (watching, ep.10) Amazing Nurse Nanako (finished) Whisper of the Heart (finished) if anyone else has any suggestions on good anime to watch, that would be great personally, i dont know why people care about art in this stuff; i just enjoy great plots with lots of twists and moving moments (in case i never mentioned it, i have easily read hundreds of books so far) more than the way it looks. oh and about AIR...are there any movies? i really love this, and i want MORE!!! (i dunt want it to end in three episodes!!) and also, is there any plans to continue elfen lied past it's end in ep.13? without mentioning anything, i really, really want more clarity, more closing! those who've seen it, i think you know who i want to come home! |

Check the ANN Encyclopedia entry for AIR, it has info on the related movie and Summer Specials. Unfortunately, there probably won't be more AIR--the end is fairly conclusive, or at least as conclusive as it could be given the fact that the AIR game contains much more.
There probably won't be any more Elfen Lied anime either...you'll have to get the manga once it comes out, or obtain it "other" means. If you like AIR, you might also like Kanon, which has similar art styles and a some similar storylines (it's based on another game by the same company that did AIR). Other top entries in the "depressing drama/romance" category are SaiKano (love story + war story = ) and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (AKA "KgNE"), which is a (imo) quality romance without any sci-fi or supernatural elements. For shows similar to Hellsing, check for other vampire animes--they won't be exactly the same but with vampires, who can go wrong? Except for Karin, of course Other shows that would be considered "important" in the quest for anime knowledge would be some of the more popular Cartoon Network/Adult Swim shows, like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Fullmetal Alchemist--all of these contain action, drama, comedy, and a plot epic enough to garner widespread audiences...these are the sorts of shows that a good majority of people in the fandom know about. Wolf's Rain and Outlaw Star are the same way, to a lesser extent. If you want more, click "My Anime" on the left side of the screen, and from there click "Public Lists"--you can see ratings and comments that people have given to shows that they know. I know that dormcat, abunai, Tony K, and I have lists with comments, and others do as well--look for people with more categories than the standard Want to See/Seen Some/Seen All/Will Not Finish, as they'll be more likely to have commented on their listed anime. |

SaiKano sounds good. i also left out (god forbid these are two of my favorites ) fullmetal alchemist and she, the ultimate weapon. KgNE sounds like fun too. i also recall...no, wait, i have two of the mangas for love hina..thats pretty good imo, if you haven't seen it yet. im going to try the anime, although i haven't heard good things about it.... |

Hi and welcome NyuuChan...
Air is one my favourite anime plot-wise, I'm glad you enjoy it. About the Air question I have good news and bad news, the good news is there is Air the movie but the bad news is it's just an alternate retelling of Air TV but there is an Air in Summer special OVA which I've yet to find in my local anime shop so I don't know how the OVA is, click on the link for more about the OVA anime#5428 If you love anime with a plot twist, I highly recomend Scrapped Princess anime#2083, It's one of my favourite, it's a great fantasy anime if that's your cup of tea . Another anime that I would recomend is Twelve Kingdoms anime#840 the art on this anime didn't get my attetion at first but the story really get you hook to the tv to the very end. |

(anything to keep this series up!) oh, and i searched, and found vampire d or something...that anything reminiscent of hellsing? |

Vampire Hunter D. It's nothing really like Hellsing besides one plot point(the main characters are kind of similar). But it's still vampires. There's Vampire Hunter D and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. Both are movies. The first was alright, I wasn't too impressed because I heard how "cool" VHD was. However, the second one was better in all categories. A very good dark vampire tale.

Does anyone know if AIR is slated for a R1 release? I only watch R1 anime and have heard so much about this that I'm curious. Thanks.

Air TV hasn't been licensed yet though chances of being licensed is very slim thanks to Key's licensing cost. (of course, I have an over-the-top ridiculous prediction that ADV will get it as a joint package license along with Full Metal Panic: TSR since both of those series are animated by Kyoto Animation) |

ok, first of all....
whoever it was in here who reccomended SaiKano, i thank you greatly. though the rating of extreme graphic violence, strong sexual content + language seemed a bit...odd....i watched the OVA i believe (another love song) and it is really, really, really good. im almost wanting to say it's *better/good as* elfen lied was....however it is quite a sad story, which i expected from the basic plot. and IMO, there is another name for the anime, i believe she, the ultimate weapon or something along those lines. and is chobits anything worth watching? |

Saikano is very good, you should check out the 13 ep series to see the rest of the story. I have heard the OVA is kind of a different view of the same events. Will see it when it hits R1.
Some people love Chobits, others hate it. I am firmly in the *love* category, so yes I would say it is worth watching. Another good love story that has some unexpected twists toward the ending. It kind of gets you thinking too about robots in society and how it could warp our views of human relations if such human-like creations were so firmly integrated into our society. Plus, Chii is adorable. |

FLCL...it's my most favorite anime, yup it's worth seeing!
Seriously though, it is pretty crazy but it's short, 6 episodes and it has great music and animation. That alone is reason enough to see it to me, but I really love the story. It won't make any sense when you watch it first. Not in a Mind-**** type of way, just kind of a "..what happened?". But if you think about it, rewatch it a few times =P, it really can make sense. I watched it with the director's commentary on, that was really cool. And chobits...It's pretty popular. Ground breaking amazing anime? I'm not so sure..but funny, with nice art and lovable characters? Check, check and check. This is a pretty well recommended anime. Overall, yeah I say both FLCL and Chobits are worth watching. |

watching FLCL as we speak, and also downloading chobits and what appears to be a movie of the same name.
however i googled (against my better judgment, expecting the same fiasco i got when i googled inuyasha...>_>) chobits, and it looks kinda like love hina, which i loved! one question; was chobits before elfen lied? because chii and nyuu are almost the same, cept nyuu says nyuu and chii says chii.... |

*no need to quote an entire long post if you're not responding to all of it--just quote the relevant sections, if any*
If AIR had been licensed to R1, believe me, the boards would be all abuzz about it...as other have said, a combination of high licensing costs + AIR being a strange/confusing/"niche" anime=not so likely to be licensed. It's been less than a year since AIR finished airing (he he, get it? ), so it's still "early" in terms of licensing intervals. Watching only R1 anime is an admirable moral stance to have, but unfortunately, you'll probably be missing out on quite a few good series that don't have much of a chance of being licensed. For AIR and others of the "based on a hentai game but we took all the porno out so now it's just sad girls in snow" (quote stolen from AnswerMan) category, I think it's reasonable to watch fansubs of them, since the chances of them coming to R1 are pretty low. After all, it seems like the main things getting licensed these days are shows with vampires, ninja, samurai, giant robots, and giant breasts, and AIR lacks these elements (not counting the Summer Arc). To the OP:
Use the "edit" button in the top right corner of the post rather than making another post.
Chobits is a decent show, combining cute robots + fanservice and a bit of philosophy about man and machine, but buy some DVDs every once in awhile, k? Taking a look at Teh Rules, one finds that ANN isn't exactly friendly to downloading, especially not of shows already licensed and released on DVD... Also, Chobits did come before Elfen Lied, and many people have picked up on the Chii-Nyuu similarities; good eye to catch that |
