I have no clue where to put this, so I'll put it here. Mods, move this if you want.
Anyways, I was... em, browsing some conservative web sites to, uh, get more information on the right-winger's victory laps on Samuel Alito being confirmed to the Supreme Court, when I came across this little nugget. I didn't have time to go through the article, so just peruse through it and take from it what you will.

The part of the article about Kyle was clearly referring to hentai even though it wasn't mentioned.

It's actually not at all a bad article; it just takes a more decidedly Christian perspective than anyone who isn't a diehard Christian is probably going to be comfortable with. The writer does seem to make an effort to point out that anime and manga aren't inherently the problem; the real problem is becoming addicted to/obsessed with it, which is a Bad Thing with anything.

And this is the right place to post something like this.

Yes, they do know about hentai, hence the “I suddenly found myself looking at [animated] sexual acts.” part in the article. Essential, what this Focus on the Family website is saying is that Christians should not be watching anime or reading manga because it does not honor God. Focus on the Family is pretty much on the far right side of things.

I myself happen to be a Baptist, but I will watch what I think is good enough to watch or read what I feel is good enough to read.

No big deal. It's not even the first time Focus on the Family has covered anime; in November 2004, Rhonda Handlon wrote an article entitled "Manga & Anime: Inside Japan's Hottest Exports" covering much of the same ground, and there was a much older FotF piece written circa 1997.

It's really tame compared to some of the letters against anime that Berit Kjos posts on her "Your Comments" page about anime.

While the article obviously has a Christian slant to it, I was pleasently surprised to see that it didn't degrade into the anime version of the Harry Potter argument. It's great to know that someone can actually write an intelligent article with a Christian tone to it.

They were pretty reasonable for fundamental Christians. You know, I was going to reply saying "You know, a majority of animes and mangas that gain popularity over here end up with teen ratings like TV13, TV14, TV15, and TV16 (mostly the first two) and many are for general audiences and aren't really worse than many popular prime time shows in America, and the majority aren't as trashy as South Park or Jerry Springer or as degenerative as Viva La Bam..."....but then I remembered, from their perspective, those shows I mentioned they must speak out against, hehe. : -p

Even still, a majority of the anime that makes it hear is on the level of many popular TV shows and movies that fit social norms over here (and I'm talking TVPG, TV14, and PG and PG-13 material). A lot of stuff that would pass as the equivalent as TVMA or R would barely pass. Of course, some stuff would totally fit those grades, but it's the majority. There is a lot more anime being released over here fitting ratings like Nuku Nuku, Ah! My Goddess, Last Exile, Wolf's Rain, and Scrapped Princess than Gantz (bleh!) and Elfen Lied.

As a Christian, I like the article - considering the site it's on - it's not particularily condemning at all. It's pretty well balanced and fitting for the perspective it comes from... I actually like this part:

This is the most biblical approach I've seen when it comes to manga/anime, etc. While the bible may seem to have its boundaries, the verse above also shows there is quite a bit of liberty and freedom to be found as well. It's not unreasonable to question youself for why you do certain things, and sometimes introspection is a good idea.

Given the entire scope of the article, I can appreciate that it's not pulling the "All anime and manga is pr0n" card of ignorance.

You know, my college has like 40,000 students and I've yet to meet someone who's extremely religious to the point where his/her religion affects every decision in his/her life... I've seen some Christians holding up huge "Satan is the devil" posters and screaming about god and heaven and stuff but it's not like they don't go out on a Friday night and get drunk.

Where are the extreme ones? I want to meet one.

Overall, the article is fairly balanced, and it least it doesn't do blanket condemnations of everything. It's pretty much the same ideas I hear when it comes to movies and other entertainment from these guys. However, it seems they're a bit ignorant, as apparently "moé" is now any anime containing romance Rolling Eyes

On a side note, I blame Breakaway's poor advice (which I first read when I was 15--just like porn, early exposure to this stuff will warp you) for making me fail at relationships with women in the real world outside of their little sXe bubble Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

I was more regarding to taking action (such as trying to ban anime). Anyway, I don't think so...I just meant like...they shouldn't tell non-religious anime fans that it's sinful and bad. I'm not imposing my views on anyone; I'm not taking any action...but if they start making a fuss to me about it then I'll get annoyed.

I thought the argument/article was pretty well conducted. It could have been a lot more accusative and one-sided, but it was really aiming to "help" the people that are "sinning" than point fingers that anime and manga need to burn in hell.

Ah this is where it's great to be a Darwinist rather than religious. I just don't see how people can actually think sexual desire could be considered a "sin." It's how we reproduce. All living things develop hormones at a certain age and are driven to reproduce (at an extreme end, there is a rat that develops so much hormones at one point in its life that it gets so horny and dies from poisoning from its own excessive hormone levels after mating with a bunch of female rats. That's how "worth it" it is). Without this desire the reproductive success of all living things would diminish and species would risk dying out because there would just be no desire to find a mate and reproduce.

Anyway, let Christians do what they want as long as they don't impose their views on other people.

Oh, I wonder what they would think if they saw animes like Evangelion and Chrno Crusade. I think we should keep those a secret from them, too.

This is reminding me of the bible bashing that my parents subscribed to me from my teacher, religious instructor and sunday school classs shortly after I started playing AD&D in primary school.
And again after I converted from Christainity over to Buddism.
(which you can blame my Society & Culture Teacher for that Razz )

That sounds more like pubutiy and being a typical teenager to me.

The problem is see here in this article that a lot of these christain groups use use various media to put the blame on so just so they can gain control with the word of the lord. Over all, it the reason why i stopped being a christain when i realised that it was form of control.

Any bet next month, he's dong an article about World Of Warcraft and other MMORPGs and computer game that are evil.
