I think Ranma 1/2 is martial arts, but I've never watched it and it's very very long. But it's worth looking at.

Flame of Recca is what comes to mind first. It's about a boy who wants to be a ninja and there are a lot of martial arts fights. I thought the show was pretty decent.

Hunter X Hunter isn't ninja but it's got a lot of martial arts and fighting. It's also very fun and entertaining and one of my favorite shows of all time.

All of the martial arts in Ranma are either comedy or slapstick, nothing at all like Naruto or Kenshin. If you want martial arts, but the fun kind, definitely check it out, though.

I will second Hunter X Hunter. It's not bona fide martial arts, but about halfway through the series, they use a martial artsy kind of concept for all the fights there on out. It's my 2nd favorite shounen series, is directed by Furuhashi Kazuhiro (who did Kenshin), and stars Takeuchi Junko (who plays the voice of Naruto). Very fun series, but gets a lot darker towards the end. It's also the first shounen series I've seen that doesn't appear to have ANY filler.

some good martial arts animes that i know of are street fighters 2v tv series and the movie. street fighters alpha is also fine. don't think that these series are for kids since they are taken from video games. there are many sadistic and extremely violent scenes. these animes are the type that have a lot more action than talking which is great.
another anime i can think of is a recent movie called final fantasy 7. it's 3d and filled with "the matrix" type martial arts actions which is really beautiful to the eyes. the story is super weird though but who cares.
my favourite will be the fist of the north star. compare to animes these days, the graphics are way behind. but it has great storyline and setting. the lawless and desert-like world is just very fitting for a martial arts anime. the characters are also excellent. the evil ones are all psychotic if not perverted. it feels so good seeing them blowing up. hehe, i am evil.

Hunter X Hunter, Bleach, and Get Backers are what I think of when compared to Naruto.

Hunter X Hunter has been mentioned already, but I recommend it as well. It's got some very fun characters in it; if you find Naruto annoying as the protagonist, you'll love Gon. You'll get sucked into this one for sure once it gets into the tournament.

Bleach has all of that stuff, but it deals with fighting "ghosts" and what-not. Though it's still going on like Naruto, you'll have a while before you catch up. Right now I like it more than Naruto. It's funnier, but it also can be serious when it needs to be.

Get Backers is another entertaining anime with an array of interesting characters. Though it's not so much ninja/martial arts, it's an action-based anime to the likes of Naruto. All the characters have some special power that it could be thought of as Japan's X-men, or something. I'd give it a shot.

but are there any that display martial arts in a realistic manner or are the all 'special attacks', super speed, flying jump things, weapons that seem to completely ignore armour(watch berserk and you'll understand...why do they even bother putting it on..), energy blasts of doom and a strange ability to take so many potentially lethal blows and still get back up again?

(sorry a bit of a rant about ridiculous fighting practices...)

Yes, rurouni kenshin is very realistic in most aspects. some of the things might not actually happen, but the fighting is very real, exept maybe the speed.

Hmmm martial arts anime...........

heres what comes to mind:

Street Fighter Alpha - Fun movie with an actual decent plot an anime based off a video game. Crappy villain but still better plot and story then most fighting anime.

Street Fighter Alpha: Generations - Prequel to Street Fighter Alpha and also helps explain some events in Alpha.

Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture - Its based off a fighting game soo yeah that pretty much sums up any important details. Some fanservice..........well ok a lot. Still good movie but typical for an anime of its nature. I still enjoyed it though.

I can't think of anymore but I second Flame Of Recca, Bleach, GetBackers and Hunter X Hunter.

"Believe it!"

The only anime with realistic combat that comes to mind is Cowboy Bebop. In all other combat animes I've ever seen you find all those psyonic, flying or energy attacks. Naruto, Hunter X Hunter, Berserk, Street Fighter, etc they are all guilty of this, but I think that is why I like them, and why I never liked Cowboy Bebop.

I'll agree its better than most.

but we'll see how you do after getting shot several times...

and Rurouni Kenshin...again better than most...but since when did style make that much of a difference? There are only so many ways to use a sword and in any decent method you'll have pretty much all of them. (I've only seen the first couple of eps of kenshin...I stopped after the hypnotism guy...not what I was looking for)

For most people, entertainment rules over realism . . . especially if in realism "there are only so many ways to use a sword and in any decent method you'll have pretty much all of them". Who wants to see the same type of fighting over and over again?

Not I.

Jin'ei is the least realistic fighter in the original version of Rurouni Kenshin (in the series, the Feng Shui mystics top him), but other than being ridiculously athletic, the action is handled pretty tamely. It comes down to martial arts skill and how they use it in Kenshin, and the "super powers" don't become a huge issue. Just because Sanosuke can punch down trees doesn't mean he throws buses at people.

GetBackers... I don't know if I can recommend it... The problem I have with it is that every time they're in a bind, it basically says, "Time to use my ULTIMATE attack!" The fights end up feeling like there was no real pay off.

I disagree about Kenshin. The action is amazing, but it is anything but realistic. Come on! He creates a vacuum that sucks in his adversaries just by swinging his sword in the air! And Sanosuke may not throw buses at people but that doesn't mean he can't. He turns boulders to dust with his fists!

I do agree about GetBackers. I prefer it when the main character half bleeds to death before he is able to figure out a way to defeat his enemy, like Ichigo from Bleach.

Oh, I remembered another combat anime that is realistic with no super powers: Kenshin, the OVA.

So that makes 2:

- Kenshin OVA
- Cowboy Bebop

But I think that's it.

now the Kenshin OAV was perfect.

who will tell me that was unexciting, it was also realistic enough for me.

and i can sort of accept the super survivability of main characters...having them die would be much fun either.
