Hehe, Oh Great!'s shounen manga gets a higher age rating than his semi-pornographic adult-oriented title. Almost funny.

Seconded. I don't know much about Air Gear other than it's going to be made into an anime and it's an Oh Great! title. And I've been very satisfied with Del Rey's releases, so I'm glad they picked this one up so that way CMX couldn't butcher another one of Oh Great!'s titles. |

I just read about his title in Anime Insider the other day and was wondering if someone was going to get it. Thankfully, it wasn't CMX.
So, does anyone know how good this title is compared to TenTen? |

Truthfully, CMX wouldn't have had that much to butcher if it had licensed Air Gear. -_- The manga is tame in comparison to a seinen title like Tenjho Tenge. Whereas Tenge tends to follow what I like to call the "1-nipple" rule, (meaning full/ fully-partial nudity is kind of rare) the nudity in Air Gear is either implied or reduced to something akin to naked Barbies. I realize that it would seem that I'm paying just a little too much attention to the fanservice in Air Gear, but with a paper thin plot it's hard not to...
... That's not to say that Air Gear is a bad manga (Otherwise I wouldn't have bought the series). What Air Gear lacks in depth of plot (episodic/monster of the week shonen clichés) is more than overcompensated in the unique character design (Akito/Agito). Think Tenjho Tenge with levitating-rollerblades and a greater emphasis on humor. BTW: Of the few American mangas I've seen, my friend's Genshiken volumes (also by Del Rey) seemed to have better translation/localization as compared to her Death Note volumes (VIZ) that had some annoying/cheesy lines (catering towards a younger audience?). |

Oh Great is known for like 2 things:
1. Beautiful artwork, especially the female. 2. Fanservice It's not like Oh Great create very memorable storyline, but TenTen was definitely better imo. Air Gear is a good shonen manga and worth getting if you enjoy #1 and #2. But the fanservice is definitely not on par with TenTen. |

This better not be the kind of manga titles that are going to go in their mature line. That would REALLY suck. Seems Del Rey are all about going after the fanservice loving North Americans. Ugh.

Thank god that Oh Great!'s "brilliant" storytelling and god-given ability to draw panties won't be compromised this time!
But seriously, I hope that this isn't an example of what Del Rey has in mind when they said "mature" manga. This is more of a shonen story than what they were describing (though so is Negima and that gets shrink wrapped), but I've been disapointed with what they've announced so far, especially since they can basically pick any Kodansha title. Basilisk is solid, but why not Histore or a slew of other Afternoon/Morning action titles? I guess I can't comment on Suzuka since I haven't read it, but it sounds like your typical ecchi title (which can be a good thing, but usually is bad.) I guess I shouldn't complain since their other titles are for the most part diverse and solid (though it would have been nice if they had picked up the infinitely better Vinland Saga over Air Gear.) If they pick up Mushi-shi or Me and the Devil Blues, all will be forgiven. |

It's not a ground breaking story, but it's still a fun, gorgeously drawn manga. I'm just glad we're getting it, whether or not it lives up to people's definition of "mature".

WOW!! IT is finally coming to the states!!
Although Air Gear is not a "groundbreaking" storie plot line, it is fun, and that is what makes this title realy great in my opinion. That and its good fan service. lol. This is gonna be realy good. I can't wait. |

Anyone remember the time that Tokyopop got all the kodansha titles?
Looks like that's no longer the case (since a long time ago actually) Look at the sort of stuff Del Ray has been acquiring: school rumble, negima, tsubasa, air gear, etc. They've all been the more recent kodansha shonen magazine titles. In contrast, I haven't seen Tokyopop getting any kodansha shonen magazine titles in the past year or so. And we all know that Viz has a monopoly on all shogakukan and shueisha titles. Has Tokyopop lost their connections with Kodansha? (Not that I care anyway) P.S. Suzuka is trash. The main character is such an asshole (even bigger of a hole than Manaka from Ichigo 100%) that you just want to punch in right in the face. |

Wouldn't be surprised if Oh! Great made the deal himself, cus he was pissed with how CMX handled Ten Ten.
W: It's probably not connections, but how much more money Del Rey's willing to pay for the licenses than TP. They have a larger corporation backing them than Tokyopop. Although that plagiarism scandal's really gotta be hurting the latter company, since they probably expected it to be one of their more high-profile titles. |

Yesyes... I definitely agree with you! Air Gear has yet to get into some kind of big plot (and I'm saying this having read up to chapter 36), but it definitely makes up for that with some of the best characters. When Akito/Agito came in, I was completely blown away by him. He is so cute and so evil~ (sorry if it sounds like I was just repeating what you said, but I had to agree) ^^ Another thing I'd like to point at as one of the high points of Air Gear is the art. The art is absolutely beautiful (much different from TenTen in many respects). I am completely in love with how Oh Great has handled sound effects and am very glad that a company that translates sound effects didn't get it, because there are many times it would be impossible to do. He uses very sharp angles, minimum amounts of lines, still uses a good number of comictones, but I think less than TenTen. (I haven't read TenTen ever since CMX got it really...) Chapter 33, the second two page spread is probably my favorite page thus far. Actually, look at chapter 34 again, I think this may be leading up to a bigger story/plot line in the near future.
For me, Viz annoys me in more ways than one. First off, I don't like how they translate the sound effects (and if they HAVE to absolutely do so, I would rather they actually hand-draw them back in instead of using some ugly, computer-generated fake font. I'm a bit biased....) Death Note wasn't too bad. I didn't think there was much to be editted/changed in DN, and Viz didn't change much. There seems to be a little less religious-references, the left in the word "shinigami" which surprised me, they left in L calling Light by "Yagami-KUN", they changed some things to sound more "American". For instance, in volume 3, they changed "consomme" flavored chips to "barbeque" which is something I don't have a problem with really. It's a potato chip flavor, big deal. Then they reference things like "Mario Kart" in either volume 1 or 2 which seemed a bit cheap. BUT then, they go and use words that are at a college-level. I was reading volume 2, came across such a word and asked my mom and even she didn't know. Like, always, I have NO idea what Viz is thinking. (Just like for Hikaru no Go and Prince of Tennis: What IS Viz thinking?) |
