For those of you who have read the first volume of Yotsuba& (I haven't seen the fan-scans, so I'm going on what I've read of the first volume only, mind you) how would you compare it to Azuma-san's other masterpiece, Azumanga Daioh?
of course, I haven't read more than one volume of the AzuDai manga (though I have seen the anime), so I can't fully compare, but I would have to say that I really enjoyed the first volume of Yotsuba&. It seems that from this first volume that there is/will be more of an empasis on family and neighborhood interaction rather than school life. Family especially, considering Yotsuba is an spoiler[orphan]. I also can see maybe some more of a strong moral message in here...somewhere. Of course, just like AzuDai, this was also very funny, and there's another short little girl with funny hair in it too (gotta love that clover-head!) There haven't been as many quirky characters introduced yet, but the ones that have been introduced have personalities that seem to bounce very comedically off each other. I especially liked each of the three sister's (and their mother's) reactions to Jumbo. And of course its a still an every-day slice of life, as-the-world turns kind of series. I can't wait for the eventual, inevitable anime adaptation either ![]() |

Yotsuba is quite different to Azumanga Daioh in that it has a specified story as opposed to the "slice of life" style of Azumanga Daioh.

Well, Yotsuba&! is still considered as a typical "slice of life" for lacking a central plot. Most of its chapters are rather episodic, that is, once you've learned who's who you can start from anywhere without feeling much confused. As a reader who had finished AzuDai and have been collecting Yotsuba&! (till vol. 3 right now), I'd like to say that Yotsuba&! is way better, although AzuDai is very entertaining: 1. Yotsuba&! has a much improved, mature art style. As a four-panel comic strip, AzuDai has no and needs no background art, but Yotsuba&! has a much detailed, almost lifelike, surrounding. 2. Much better storytelling. For me, one of the most touching scene in Yotsuba&! is the spoiler[afternoon shower] chapter (can't remember the number...the tankoubon is not with me right now). It shows that the purest form of joy can be found anywhere and everywhere, as long as you have a pure heart. This, in my personal opinion, is the highest form of entertainment. Only three manga I've read have achieved this state-of-the-art. I'll give you a cookie if you know the name of the other two manga titles. ![]()
There was a very convincing poster for the cast of live-action drama (but still a FAKE): ![]() It looks so real, yet the blog said "99% a LIE (99%ウソです)," for there was a similar poster for AzuDai years ago. Darn. ![]() Last edited by dormcat on Sat Jul 23, 2005 11:16 pm; edited 1 time in total |

dormcat I believe the spoiler[noon shower] is in the last chapter of the first volume (the only one I've read!)
And, as I've said I haven't read much of the AzuDai manga so I can't comment on the art, but I think that Azuma's art is very clean and attractive, so I have no problems there! Personally, Azumanga Daioh was one of my favorite anime series, mostly because the girls' personalities bounced so humorously off of each other, and there seem to be some good personalities in this series too. How many volumes are out currently in Japan, and does anyone know/can estimate how long it will run? |

Well, I'm only on the first tankoubon, and so far, there's been something resembling a story... But I can see your point. |

Well, it's not like a story that's really going anywhere in particular...
![]() Chapter 7 is titled Rain and it is the last chapter in the 1st volume of the English version, for those who were wondering. I do think the art is more developed, but I kinda prefer the gag-style of AzuDai. I do like the crazy character interactions, especially when they say silly things to each other and friendly banter threatens to escalate to full-on combat ![]() "Glow... ball... warning" ![]() |

The subject of Okinawa comes up on the second volume and I was strongly reminded of the Okinawa visit in Azudai since a lot of the same things (stereotypes I guess) came up.

Well, I haven't read the original Japanese version, nor have I seen the "fan-scans" so I can't actively comment on the changes, but from people who have seen both, how does ADV's translation holds up.
I just find it so funny when Yotsuba says stuff like "gore-juice" ![]() |

I think the main difference I noticed between Yotsuba and Azumanga is the characters in Yotsuba are much more subtly and deeply developed. The characters all have their own memorable traits, of course, but none of them are as one-note as Tomo or Kaorin. And, as mentioned before, the art is excellent.

i own all four of the Jpanese manga, and i think #4 has the best growth and interaction yet, and the in-fighting is funny! Yostuba is funny, but the funniest scenes are with a certain character and Jumbo (it's ultra-funny to me!)
![]() as mentioned, the art is very cute, and the styles of backgrounds are exceptionally well-drawn! ![]() |

Does that apply to me, too? Or would my participation fall under the heading of "unfair competition", in this regard? - abunai |

Hmm... I'm almost positive that YKK is one of the two. The other is... mm... Aria, maybe? I don't know... |

Of course one of them is YKK. As for the other, I'd personally say Hanaotoko, but since I don't recall seeing that on your "My Manga" list (what, so I cheated), the only other slice-of-life series I can think of is Aria, which I have yet to read (though I might also have to guess Honey and Clover). As for the argument, Yotsuba&! wins by a long shot. Just a far more mature and well written series. |

I was kinda surprised that the game has been kept running after six months.

(Dormcat hands Cloe a cookie) It's not that hard, especially that you've read this entry in my blog.
Oh yeah. Absolutely. ![]() (Dormcat hands abunai a bucket of cookies) |

This is by far the most difficult question of the year. However, after many moments of thought, the edge goes to Yotsuba&!. Or maybe not. A tie perhaps?
AzuDai: 9.8/10 Yotsuba&! 9.9/10 I guess it works like that. I've read the first volume 9 times, the second 5, and the third 3. It's so addictive. Then again, I've seen Azumanga Daioh over and over and over. Well, They are both phenomenal. But Yotsuba&! makes you feel better and laugh a bit harder (that's very hard to top AzuDai). |
