As of last night, my SO and I are boycotting ADV Manga. Why?, you may ask.

Let's take a look: They have consistently either delayed or in some cases, completely stopped production of certain titles that we were religiously buying (Those Who Hunt Elves, Louie the Rune Soldier, Yotsuba&! - just to name a few).

Their website has yet to be updated on the manga side. The last update for ANYTHING manga related was September of 2004 - Over a year ago!

Some might think we're going a bit overboard, but considering that they can't be bothered to update their website, they won't talk to customers (ever try calling the customer service number? that's a joke in itself), and fully ignore any requests for when older titles might have more volumes released is more than enough for us to say we're through.

ADV either needs to get on the ball with their manga production or start sniffing around for other publishers who would love to take the titles they've neglected to produce and let us who have been waiting for titles to be released buy our collections so they can be complete.

Yeah, I'm really sure that not buying any of ADV's manga to support those series is really going to motivate ADV to continue releasing them. Rolling Eyes Not buying any of their manga is only going to lead both ADV and the Japanese creators that the reason why they didn't sell wasn't because of poor releases but instead they'll think it's because there isn't any market for those series in the U.S. at all and then you won't have any of those manga available in English anymore. Seriously, just keep buying their manga when they're released and while you're waiting for more to come out, just read something else instead of whining about how you don't have it right then and there. Is that really so hard to do?

So... Stop buying ADV manga, because they've stopped producing any?

In this case, boycotting is counter-productive. They cancelled most of their manga BECAUSE they weren't making a profit on them. Boycotting what they are still releasing isn't going to help things.

Maybe if more people start to buy the manga ADV has released, ADV may start production on those series again. At least, it would be nice if that happened.

How can you boycott something if you can't even buy it in the first place.

Well, if you wanted to drive ADV into the ground and guarantee that you'll never be able to finish the series that they were publishing, I guess this would be one way to do it.

Well, if they had a better schedule and distribution process isnetad of going willy-nilly into the genre, then we wouldn't have this mess now would we?

ADV sucks at manga. I started boycotting ADV manga when they started releasing manga halfway into the series.

I can see a reason to boycott if ADV manga put out shoddy edited release of manga---but they don't. Their manga division isn't doing well and they can't continue to pump out manga if people arn't going to buy them. I'm sure ADV would love to put out more manga as fast as Viz or TP, but their lineup's appeal isn't that strong. Instead of boycotting, you should go around and spread the word on your favorite title instead. At least you'll be helping out the situation instead of making it worst for everyone else.

I remeber hearing some thing that ADV is having more finacial problems. I do remember reading some where last year that they retrenched quite a few of their staff. (A lot from the manga department)

Their problems have not changed in the last 10 years. They are still purchasing more anime licences than they can handle.

In all honesty, I look at the title before i look at who is distributing them. I normally don't pick that much ADV Manga, as a lot of these stuff they are doing are anime series that they are releasing . And considering that anime and manga series generally follows the same plot, i would rather pick up the anime.

It wouldn't take that much to boycott them. That would be like boycotting Pink Floyd albums. It doesn't have much impact because they seem to come out once a millenium.

I still really don't understand why ADV failed so miserably at manga. It seems like every time I go to the anime or bookstore there is a new manga company entering the market. Or look at Del Rey, who releases some great quality work and they're still in their infancy. I guess what I'm saying is that there are other companies entering the market and are seeming to do ok. Why did ADV implode? To me, the "feeling" I get is that they never really focused on the manga. They felt they could just license anything and it would sell. But I didn't see their titles as any worse than some of the crap other publishers put out. I really enjoy Cromartie, Chrono Crusade, and Full Metal Panic. On the other hand, I think Ray really sunk into a moronic style of writing right out of Popeye after the first volume. But they're playing that series up just because of the upcoming anime version. It just seems like maybe they could build on their successes. Maybe try some series that they don't own the anime rights to.

And they could at least update their site about the manga they do still print.

i've already given up and refuse to support people i think are scum (i have been boycotting them since I found out they put a bunch of titles on hiatus without telling us). i love my Aria and I will gladly wait for when ADV either 1. goes out of business 2. sells licences 3. closes manga side

if they own the Aria license and do nothing with it, they must be losing $$$. it will soon run out and somebody will gladly pick it up sooner or later.

SCREW ADV

Most of the feelings that SO and I have is the fact that they'd rather just throw stuff at us as if to say 'Look! We might not have what you wanted, but this is better!'

Forgive us if we're die-hard older stuff fans. The fact that they had up until February of last year been religously releasing titles on an almost monthly basis, then suddenly stopped did nothing by make us doubt how reliable the manga side of ADV was.

Should we just give up manga altogether? No.
Will the boycott work? Probably not.

It just means that our hard earned money will be better spent on TokyoPop (who for a while was almost gone but they came blazing back), Viz, DelRey, CMX and probably a few other press companies that I'm neglecting to mention. I still stand by what I say: if they can't produce the goods, sell it or cut a deal with someone who can and knows it will sell. As it stands (this is from a personal standpoint), our 7 volume collection of Those Who Hunt Elves will never see the other 19 books unless we learn to read kanji.

The boycott is a personal choice. I posted in the hopes that other people besides us felt the same way. I can see by a few of the replies that yes, ADV Manga does indeed suck. Glad someone else has said it besides me.

I real that they are spending more money that what they earn.
This is not the first time.

Also, I am looking at their selection of manga. Most of the titles they have on offer have TV series that go along with it.
CHRONO CRUSADE
CROMARTIE HIGH SCHOOL
FULL METAL PANIC!
GUNPARADE MARCH
ORPHEN
PEACEMAKER KUROGANE

And most of the time, these title follow the same story line as anime. So it really comes down to this.....
1. Would you pick up a manga which follows the same story as the anime?
2. If you could only afford one or the other, would you pick up the anime or the manga of the series.

ADVision seems to be stronger with anime. The reason why Viz has been sp succesful is that they don't seem to rush into things as much as ADV.
