This is perhaps the most interesting and least expected poll I have ever seen on an anime site. Being Canadian, however, I'm a bit disappointed to see there's no "blank/spoiled ballot" option.
I expect that would see quite a few votes as well.

This is wonderful that it's up!
I am Canadian too, soo I think it's great that our election goes noticed. I mean, what person on the planet DIDN'T now about the US election! It's cool!
Steven Harper is the right choice. I mean unless you want the same rediculous taxing from Mr.Layton, OR you want more money stolen from us from Mr. Martin, OR if you want Quebec to be their own country so they can steal all of our goods.
Really you don't have much of a choice!
VOTE CONSERVATIVE!

I'm also delighted to see a poll like this on ANN. That was most unexpected.
I've had Stephen Harper as an MP. He was...not terribly intelligent. In fact he sounds like a broken record (that's on his good days).
Now my current MP seeking reelection is a conservative who called Nelson Mandela a terrorist and spoiled the unanimous vote required to make him an honorary canadian citizen. I refuse to vote for him. Since the only two other candidates so far are a fourth year geography student running for the green party and liberal candidate who has been my alderman, been chairman of the Calgary Board of Education and recently earned her law degree, my choice is clear.
Liberals this election.

I have to disagree.
Do you really want them to steal more money from us? And I don't excactly think that they're going to cut our taxes.
I'm not saying Harper is great, i'm saying he's better that the rest of them.
Vote Conservative

As much as Canada probably does need some Conservative restructuring, I don't like Harper at all. He's a fool for placing so much focus of his platform on something as ridiculous as actually reopening the issue on gay marriage, effectively taking rights away from people, and I'm not too hot for his intentions to completely gut the CRTC and turn it into something more closely resembling the FCC. Now if only he'd bring this much attention to something like health care.
With the current state of the Conservative party, I don't think it's likely that they'd be able to support a minority government effectively. Maybe next time, but Harper needs to sit out for a little longer and rethink his strategy. As much as I don't like the Liberals, I don't really have any problem with Martin, so I'm just going to hope for another Liberal minority.
However, since it's the Conservatives and NDP who are neck and neck in my riding, I'll probably have to vote NDP.

You'll note that I live in Alberta, so my taxes are already pretty much the lowest in Canada. Even then, I wouldn't want my taxes lowered. I tend to feel my tax money is usually going to the right places and is necessary for the continued stability and operation of our country.
Keep in mind that Paul Martin was never implicated in the Sponsorship scandal. He has never been indicted for theft, embezzlement or fraud. Continued accusations of the current party comes oddly close to libel.
Generally, I have absolutely no preference between the Liberals and the Conservatives. In this case however, I tend to like Paul Martin as a party leader better than Stephen Harper. And the case of my Member of Parliament makes my decision clear. I do not vote for morons.

It's "Conservative", not "Concervative".
And, you betcha that's how I'm voting. And I'm now in a riding (Ottawa West-Nepean) that they have a decent chance of winning. I'm not pissing into the wind like I was when I voted Conservative in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges riding in 2004.

Ok, you bring up some good points, but I still see Harper as the strongest. I don't like HIM at all, I like Mr. Layton, but Layton's views are rather weak. I agree that gay marriage sould just be accepted but NO TAX CUTS? Come on, man. Conservative is the smartest way to go.

You like Layton, but you're going to vote conservative?
NDP <-> Concervative
Couldn't be farther apart. One is socialist, the other is neo-concervative.
I don't get it.

You guys are all skimming points that I had in mind when making my original post.
Basically, I see all the PM candidates this time round as a bunch of clowns.
Paul Martin comes across to me as a bit of a more articulate G.W. Bush. That's not a commentary on his party's platform (which generally I support), nor his intelligence, nor his guilt or lack thereof in any scandals. I just get the feeling he's not calling the shots near as often as he seems to want us to believe. And whatever anyone feels about his leadership skills, I don't think the rest of the political gang will ever let the scandal thing die down around him. Eventually, we're going to need a government to move on from that.
On that note, the opposition has generally displeased me. The way they tapdanced around each other, promising the public they would force the minority to do this or that, and delivering one weak ultimatum to the Liberals after another, was in my opinion just plain ridiculous (if not mildly comical). Throw in the fact that they forced the election when most of the public was against it on the basis that the government "can't be trusted" -- before the second half of the Gomery report -- and the trust issue seems transparently false. How can we truly know the extent to which we should trust the Liberals until the report is complete? And more significantly, what will now become of the second part of the report, with its forthcoming recommendations on how to curb government corruption (something that ought to be done no matter which party is in power)? My fear is it will be lost in the shuffle. I feel they've essentially robbed us joe citizens of an opportunity to have a debate and make demands for change that are long overdue.
Aside from that, Jack Layton's NDP still have an excellent platform on its face, but where will all the money come from? He seems to have lost a measure of his charisma from the last campaign in trying to defend his lack of planning for how to fund all the positive changes he wants to implement.
And also setting aside my reservations about the Tories (having been a guinea pi-- I mean, student -- throughout the Ontario Tories' reign), the very number of times in the last few years that party and its publicists have had to backpedal over things Steven Harper has said suggests to me that perhaps the party should be taking a hard look at whether or not he best represents them. A good and level-headed leader shouldn't need so many people to cover for their heat-of-the-moment responses.
And so, you see, my original suggestion: a "none of the above" option.[/i]

What's up with the line, "Remember what happened when Americans like you failed to vote?"
Is that a crack at Bush? Not that I mind, I hate him as much as the next guy.

Sorry about that. What i meant was that i like Layton as a person. I like how he is kind. But his ideas suck, so this is why i like Steven Harper. Srry for the confusion.

I'm not Canadian, but I thought I'd give my thought about this poll:
Isn't this irrelevant to anime news?
What's next, polls on abortion, stem cell research, environmentalism, celebrity couples, and favorite ice cream flavors?
Hey, it's not my website - but still, I expect a higher degree of concentration on Anime News Network. The existance of this poll is distressing.

I certainly hope that this website doesn't exist in a bubble. Politics affects everything, especially business. Remember, excercising your democratic rights helps keeps sites like this from becoming illegal.
